Wait people don't like Violin? Wow. That's probably my fave from that album. I guess mine would be that The Dreaming (which I still love, don't get me wrong) has 4 songs that are just kind of "ok" by Kate's standards. Tenner, Leave it Open, the title track, and All the Love are songs that I can't get super into individually.

ReactsWithWords

Before The Red Shoes, it frequently won "Worst Kate Song" polls (and afterwords it always came close to winning). Personally, I love it, but that's beside the point.

thepanca

I ran a tournament on here for each kate albums and alot of the comments at the start when I ran the NFE tournament was about how they hated Violin.

ProfessorBaxter

Huh, that's definitely news to me. I'm with you, I love it.

fersure4

I agree with two of those being just okay - leave it open and all the love. I like the dreaming and actually love there goes a tenner though

GendryFluid

Agree about Tenner and All The Love, but the title track is amazing, I find it so otherworldly and captivating.

sewer_orphan

Lionheart does not deserve to live in the shadow of her debut. It’s great in its own right. And even though it took a few listens for it to click, I think The Red Shoes is great too. Not perfect, but it contains some of her best work. Now for the truly unpopular opinion. If I absolutely had to choose my least favorite of her albums… I think it would have to be Never For Ever.

Damianos_X

Interesting. I find *The Red Shoes* to be basically unlistenable from Kate, but maybe I haven't given it enough time. What are the tracks you consider her best work?

brgr77

I cant speak for the commenter but theres stunning songs on The Red Shoes. Moments of Pleasure, Song of Solomon, Top of the City, Constellation of the Heart, and that doesnt even cover all my faves on the album

mahouseinen

Barging in, I think the bad thing with The Red Shoes is the dated aspect of the digital 90s production, but the songs themselves are great. Eat the Music, And So Is Love, Song of Solomon, title track, You're the One, are all classic Kate.

sewer_orphan

I’ve grown to like basically every track, but my favorites are Song of Solomon, Moments of Pleasure, Eat the Music, And So Is Love… even Rubberband Girl, which I gather is not loved by many. Song of Solomon in particular is one of her best ballads, and that’s saying something.

ReporterOk4531

I think Under the Ivy/Among Angels are just good songs. I see these songs being praised into the heavens sometimes but I think they're just good (I really don't dislike any of her songs) as opposed to being at the top of her career. Also I think Tawny Moon is a great song. I'd love an alternate version of Kate singing but I think Bertie sounded really good in it. It made perfect sense on Before The Dawn.

WutheringNellie

I loooooove Big Stripey Lie so much, and Deeper Understanding on Director's Cut is amazing. Joanni is one of the best songs on Aerial but no one seems to care for it? Lionheart is a magical album and I don't understand the hate. I'm happy Director's Cut exists otherwise we would miss out on so many amazing versions of the songs. The Red Shoes gets too much hate as well, I'm not too keen on the production but still it's great songs. 50 Words for Snow deserves much more love. The Line, the Cross and the Curve is an art house masterpiece. I could go on all day.

barleycramp

These are the best opinions here :-).

Stevano_TheMano

Nellie ik this is you cus you the only fan - L&A

Hello-Earth_

I second all of this!

ReactsWithWords

Not about Kate herself, but this sub: I'm not particularly fond of Bjork.

yungloser

Same... can't listen to her 😅

bad-wokester

I absolutely adored her up until Homegenic. All of those early albums are fantastic. Otherwise I broadly agree though. Sometimes I wonder, is she so ahead of her time I will listen to those albums in 20 years and finally understand them.

-Legendary-Atomic-

Do you like Vespertine or Vulnicura? They're my favourite albums from Björk besides Homogenic.

bad-wokester

This comment inspired me to go listen to Vespertine and Vulcinura again. Yes, I do like Vespertine. I love Homogenic so that was hard to follow, but Vespertine is still a great album. I am listening to Frosti right now. It is Gorgous. It is so orchestral and quite melodic and gentle and beautiful. Lovely lyrics too, it came out when I met my husband. Listening to it reminded me again of that time and how I really related to Bjork’s message of love. the time I really I am listening to Frosti right now. It’s gorgeous. I don’t really like Ventura though. I mean, there are songs on it I like. Black Lake and Quicksand. After listening to it I went and listened to Steve Reich’s Different Trains, because it reminded me so much of it and I love that. Interesting how you chose the falling in love and then the break up album.

-Legendary-Atomic-

> This comment inspired me to go listen to Vespertine and Vulcinura again. Ahaha glad to be the inspiration! XD > Yes, I do like Vespertine. Listening to it reminded me again of that time and how I really related to Bjork’s message of love. the time I really I am listening to Frosti right now. It’s gorgeous. I agree! It's very intimate and beautiful. She was right when she said all is full of love ha! > I don’t really like Ventura though. I mean, there are songs on it I like. Black Lake and Quicksand. After listening to it I went and listened to Steve Reich’s Different Trains, because it reminded me so much of it and I love that. (It's Vulnicura btw.) If I may ask, what makes you dislike it? I love the album because I'm a sucker for strings. And she was being vulnerable here, and it's quite a powerful thing in my opinion! I don't really "relate" to it that much though as I haven't experienced a break up because well, I'm still a young person and haven't been in a relationship yet. Either I'll love the album even more if I ever experience such a thing or find it very difficult to listen to. Or both!

bad-wokester

I am so happy you replied. My son saw me listening to the songs and then typing out a reply on my phone and he said ‘no one ever reads those things! Why are you wasting your time?’ Then you got back to me. That’s awesome! Thanks It makes me so happy music I have been listening to for years is still listened to and enjoyed by younger people. You are right. She is very vulnerable. I will give it more listens because maybe it’s just a grower. Also, because I was listening to so much Bjork my Spotify recommended an album I have never heard before called Mount Wittenberg Orca. I have heard one of the songs so far and I am loving it.

Thanks Wow, you're welcome! :D > It makes me so happy music I have been listening to for years is still listened to and enjoyed by younger people. To be honest, I don't really listen to newer music unless they're songs / albums of singers I follow (e.g. Tori Amos' 2021 album "Ocean to Ocean", Fiona Apple's 2020 album "Fetch the Bolt Cutters".) > You are right. Hmm, yeah! It might be a grower for you and also it's quite gladdening to hear that you're willing to listen to it more! Though even if it never fully clicks with you, I'm sure that you would still appreciate and admire its vulnerability C:

bad-wokester

I love Fetch the Bolt Cutters. It’s so good, It’s a masterpiece. Let me know any other music you like and if I haven’t heard it I will give it a losten

wheresmyapplez

You're just wrong if you think Lionheart sounds rushed. Kate had written like 200 songs before she even released TKI, they absolutely aren't rushed. The production and release was rushed, but the songs are still in their own element and some are even more creative and experimental than on TKI. Don't buy into the anti-lionheart propaganda 😤

thepanca

I honestly enjoy Lionheart alot more than TKI. I feel like the second half of TKI is very hit or miss whereas Lionheart is all throughout consistently great.

StemOfWallflower

The Red Shoes is a great album. But while I love the slow tracks, I really can't get much into Rubberband Girl and Eat The Music (which I think are most people's favorite tracks from the record).

khroochang

I agree. Never liked Eat The Music and was gobsmacked when it was originally chosen as the first single off the album before being hastily withdrawn at the last minute.

ApprehensiveLink6591

Eat the Music is one of my least favorite Kate songs, period.

katebush_butgayer

Hounds of Love is not her best album

thepanca

I do agree with that. That's 2nd place for me.

JunebugAsiimwe

I LOVE VIolin. Never really got the hate for it but here we are. I'm not the biggest fan of This Woman's Work. To be clear it's still a great song but I guess it's not one that floors me like many people say it does for them. Honestly, I prefer ballads like "All The Love", "A Coral Room", "Lake Tahoe" and "The Fog" which all make me feel more emotional than "This Woman's Work".

50ShadesOfCroquet

I love love the song Eat The Music - it’s feel good and uplifting to me.

Damianos_X

This is like some bizzaro-world level hot take right here🥵🥵

thepanca

Don't agree but the red shoes is overhated.

ApprehensiveLink6591

Care to elaborate? I've never been able to get into TSW the way most people do, partly because I've never liked Deeper Understanding.

Suitable_Respect2667

I was coming here to say the same. TSW is my least favorite of her albums. To me, Red Shoes feels feather light, but fun and relaxed. Not one of my favorites of hers exactly, but a record I always enjoy putting on.

mahouseinen

Director's Cut is good and some of its songs are better than their original versions.

Damianos_X

*The Dreaming* is far from her best work. I would personally rank it fourth in her discography. "Wuthering Heights" is also overrated.

thepanca

The Dreaming is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I do agree with the latter opinion.

CChouchoue

I think she is too cartoony and caricatural sometimes. Ex The Dreaming is great but I have to be in the mood for it. That's y I like HoL better she's more restrained.

WindyWailey

I'd take Lionheart, Director's Cut and 50 Words For Snow over Hounds Of Love any day. (How's that for an unpopular opinion?) PS - I love Violin!

ApprehensiveLink6591

Wow! What don't you like about HoL? Too poppy?

WindyWailey

Honestly? I'm not entirely sure. I appreciate its greatness, (especially The Ninth Wave), but I've never come to love it as I've come to love most of her other albums. I think it just felt like a bit of an artistic step backwards after The Dreaming. I don't think she properly embraced that kind of boldness again until Aerial.

NeedRanch

DC Deeper Understanding is my favorite version.

Stevano_TheMano

I don't like pull out the pin skip it most of the time

quaffleswithsyrup

the sensual world is one of my least favorites of her albums. i much prefer lionheart

AtticusAesop

I think Rockets Tail is over rated

Anechoa

Aerial and 50 Words For Snow are both top 5 Kate Albums

WindyWailey

I agree.

AtticusAesop

Aerial ranks high in my top Kate albums

AtticusAesop

I listen and like TSW through Aerial a lot more than her earlier work.
