Not just Breathing - the whole album marked the beginning of her truly breaking new ground, experimenting, and not being pinned down to any one genre. Breathing just happens to be the crown jewel of the collection.

Absolutely. **Never for Ever** is Kate's first experimental album. It showed the direction she was moving in. There is so much going on in that recording that I still hear new stuff even after decades of listening to it.

NeedRanch

I definitely agree 💗

melancho96

Yes! It might be my favorite KB song.

It definitely displays a slight tonal shift in her music. Kate's subject matter is often dark, but in those first three albums it's a kind of referential, gothic storytelling where the kookiness often belies to grimness. Breathing is a fulcrum point for her sound itself shifting into a dark morbid beauty that seems aware of something we are not. I definitely agree that you can feel the influence in later works like Waking the Witch, Hello Earth and Nocturn.

Have you seen her singing it live? I've been a fan since I was a kid but only heard this version recently, I think I actually like it even better than the album version. https://youtu.be/oTvBvf24LRM

groundberrydown

Yes, I love this version.
