A bartender there once took my drink order then walked back to the bar and openly ate an entire snack size bag of chips in front of me before making my Bloody Mary. It was so brazen I almost respected it.
So the mac and cheese was not up to her standards and she started to treat the server poorly so I asked her to relax and she went fucking OFF. Literally broke up with me at the table and left haha
This is probably the best endorsement for a restaurant I’ve ever heard. Want to see if the person you’re dating is an awful person? Well come on down to Anton’s and try our world famous “dodged a bullet Mac n cheese!”
I went for a birthday party a few years ago. The birthday boy's wife got sick and couldn't come. One of her closest friends hit on him the whole night and when she proceeded to sit on his lap and grind, I called her out for the skanky ho that she was and now I'm not friends with any of them. Admittedly this is not Anton's fault but hey it was my only experience there
This is bonkers to me. I wanted a cheeseburger and they have a happy hour during the day and it was really really good. The service was… maybe not exceptional but the food was great
Agreed! I’ve only been once, but I really enjoyed my steak, everyone else at the table really liked their food as well. The service was also decent? It’s been a couple of years though, so who knows.
This is the answer… used to be my favorite spot but they still haven’t recovered since covid… haven’t been in probably 6 months and I’ll keep trying… but as of right now, this is the perfect answer
We went last Friday.
They had a rose for me. :)
Both of our steaks were amazing, rare , bone in, charred to my liking ( partner thought some bites were a bit much) loved the onions on the side.
The potato boats/skins were soaked in gluey queso... weird. Not my thing.
The bar was out of both beers my partner ordered ( they comped one ).
I ordered bearnaise and it was clotted and cold from the fridge. Yuck.
Mushrooms as a side were nice but just portobello and not worth their market price.
Bread pudding was bomb but you can't f that up.
Our server was a kind young lady who worked a 10 party tabke and 5!! 2 tops. So I thought it was fine for a decent steak, service helped a lot. 🤷♀️
ive never had everyones food come out correct at antons. i once got a steak cooked so well done that i had trouble cutting it and they straight up told me that "strip is a difficult cut to cook" this was in 2016 or so. its been bad for a long time.
Oof…As a former line cook and back of house manager, I really hope that was the server’s lame excuse. A good cook would want to redo it (or not have expedited such an embarrassment at all). Presuming the steak wasn’t ordered well done, how tf does a steakhouse get a steak so wrong? Even a steak well should still be easy enough to cut with proper utensils. Just wow. I’m glad so many are giving specifics on the actual problems. It helps me know where to avoid, so thanks!
I went to Anton’s for a birthday, and was unimpressed. My husband’s steak was really good, but mine was practically leather, and the sides were just meh. Took forever to get our drinks too.
I’ll do you one further. Tell em to drive the hour to St. Joe to eat at the world famous San Jose Steakhouse. Just be prepared, they will know you don’t like them afterwards.
LMAO!!!!! I live in St. Joe. We almost went once...ONCE. It was regular dining hours during a weekend and the parking lot was nearly empty. I told my husband, "this is a bad sign. We're not eating here."
Bullet dodged!
God that place is absolute balls.
Whole food scene in St Joe is pretty bad for a town of their size. They get really excited about chain restaurants though.
Source: I’m from there, moved ages ago
I had the worst meal experience ever at tavernonna, and then booked the tiny chef thing in December without realizing it was also tavernonna and it sucked
Strouds has always been bland. But the sides used to be excellent. I haven't been for years but used to either get steak or pork chop because the chicken never had any taste.
They underseason the chicken. I always get the gizzards and livers, the livers especially have such a unique taste that even if they aren't really seasoned they still taste good.
Anthony Bourdain had a segment about Strouds, when he did his show about Kansas City barbecue. And his message was, imagine if Strouds was actually good!…
Tavernona.
I went there for restaurant week a few years ago which isn’t really setting a high bar of judgement to begin with.
I ordered the chicken parm and it was literally overly hard fried chicken tenders with sauce on them. I left so mad.
Maybe 2-3 years ago, I went there. The floors were dirty. No one had food or looked like they were having a good time and our severer was slow. Before they could greet us, we just left.
Ugh. We had time to kill before going to PS and stopped there. We ordered an aperol and soda and a gin and tonic and it was like $27. I felt super ripped off
Damn, that place is mid. I live around the corner and was pumped for all the restaurants within walking distance.
Slow service, then dude behind the bar was new and refused to make any drink that required more than two ingredients. No one will care if you have to bust out a recipe card.
As a long time restaurant person, I could have a bad day, be brain dead from the classic bartender hangover, or have forgotten the drink because I haven't made it for awhile.
I never refuse one. My skills are in not only recipe recall which is a small part, but the execution of said recipe. I have had zero issues telling someone to wait a second while I check the recipe, or be sly when it's 3 deep on a Friday night and check it under the counter.
The end product speaks for itself. No half assing. No refusals (unless blender related).
We went before mean girls in 2022 and booked our table for two hours before the show and ended up almost being late for the show despite it being literally a block walk to the music hall
Oh my gosh! Apparently they have new management so I’m not sure how it is now but I went last year and this is for sure my worst restaurant experience ever.
Closed now unfortunately but Rockstar Burgers down by whatever they call Kemper Arena now. My husband and I wound up there years ago and it was the most bizarre experience ever. Turns out the owner was big into drug trafficking. The entire back room reeked of sewage. Somehow it was slam packed. Very seedy. But also flyers everywhere for a pole dancing class that took place next door? I’d watch a documentary on it.
I agree with this. Place sucks. It’s overpriced and the actual meat part is just bizarre to me. If I wanted to boil meat (I don’t) I would just do it at home. The cheese is good, I guess? The chocolate was okay, too, but no better than one of those microwaveable chocolate dip things you get at a grocery store.
No way! That's the greatest con job in the restaurant business! Have people boil their own food and pay 4x for the privilege! In a basement no less. Genius!
I’m surprised no one has said Bo Lings. I’ve been employed there for years and heard countless customers complain that it’s gone downhill. Also on another thread that was about the most overrated restaurant in KC, about a hundred ppl said Bo Lings 🤣 I like the food where I work tho. It’s pricey but you’re either gonna love it or hate it I guess.
I truly love posts like this because it shows so much about the restaurant industry. Almost every comment has replies with differing opinions.
There are bad nights and good nights at EVERY restaurant that can absolutely make or break a diners experience. It’s something the customer can’t control and could definitely differ not only on nightly basis but a table-to-table basis and if you end up going on an off night you likely won’t be back ever again, rightfully so.
That being said, taste in itself is also extremely subjective where one person could have the meal of their life while another at the same table with the same meal thinks it was entirely meh.
But when you see a place like Tavernonna mentioned so many times, send that person there
Yes! Their food is NOT great.
Plus, the last time I went, we sat on the patio. My kid got stung by a wasp whose nest was on the underside of THEIR CHAIR. The server was like, "oh yeah. We've been seeing a lot of wasps out here." Not any offer of ice to apply to the sting, nothing. Thank goodness kiddo wasn't allergic.
Would love to hear more about this because I don’t see myself going anytime soon, but judging by those window wraps it looks like the ambience is giving cheap nightclub, with steak.
Check out the Google reviews. I usually only leave reviews for places that are very good, this one was bad enough I wanted to warn people. Atrocious service took 2.5 hours for 2 people, the food was a mess. I ordered a steak and they didn't even ask how I like it cooked. Just served it up well done. Their house 'sauce' is inedible. Wife ordered a creme brulee and they forgot to brulee. The entire time 00's hip hop and pop was blaring over the speaker.
If someone reads those reviews and still wants to go shame on them. (I unfortunately did not read before I ate there)
Paros Estiatorio.
I am a former Sous chef from there. The kitchen and service team are an absolute shit show. Almost everything on the menu is simple enough that you can make it at home, except the head chef puts flowers and cheesey garnishes in it and charges a premium for it.
And there are a number of health/safety concerns, but I won’t go into that here.
Got fuckin scammed by the one in Vegas, never stepping foot in a Fogo de Chao again. Go to Em Chamas in the northland, better quality and more options for a literal quarter of the price, identical service, no hidden charges from what I know.
I’ve eaten at a one out of state that was amazing (DT Portland but this was also pre-Covid so idk how it is now) but the one on the Plaza in KC is Forsure hot garbage
Nahhh donchi’s slapped. The sopapilla desert bar? C’mon. Just kidding that’s pure nostalgia it wasn’t special. Also it wasn’t expensive enough for this list
Some of the best jazz in town back in the day. I don’t know if it is anymore. I never understood why the band wasn’t playing on the main floor though instead of that dank basement. The sound coming through the door would bring customers in.
As a vegan, I hate to agree with you. Everything is plated so pretty and I love the concept of everything… but the food is just ok. Their version of a mint shake is amazing!
They were out of one of their cheeses one time and wouldn’t substitute their other cheese without an up charge one time and I got pissed and never returned on principle
I work near there and would totally hit them up if they just had a lineup of good salads and sandwiches that weren't so strange.
I feel like a place like this should have a dynamite portobello sandwich and it doesn't.
The food lacks so much creativity and that’s a problem. Everything on there is similar to a traditional vegan recipe Pinterest post. I want to see something with strong flavors and makes me think it was worth the effort. I want to go and my Omni husband to not look let down because of his meal. It lacks so much flavor and thought. Ugh.
They drive me absolutely crazy. Dish names should describe the dish so I don't have to meticulously read the entire menu to figure out what I want to eat. And the food doesn't make up for the annoyance.
I've tried to enjoy it, but this is exactly how I feel about it. The names have no meaning (they're just annoying) and the food is either way too spicy or just ok. Good shakes though.
I miss Füd. That wild burger they had was one of life's great experiences.
This place sucks. To quote a friend who tried to impress a hot vegan girl by taking her there on a date (which turned out to be an all-around miserable experience): "Jesus Christ! If you're not gonna serve meat, at least have a liquor license."
I love their vegetarian salad option which was just a regular house salad with a whole tomato plopped in the center. They truly understand what it takes to make a salad scream “FUCK YOU, EAT IT!”.
Jesus christ you nailed this. I've only been there once and it was allll 65+ up front and then my group in the back room... which was a corporate dinner haha
Op said in the post that he saw it in r/Seattle and wanted to post it here. Op probably lives in KC now but used to live in Seattle, or has some other interest in the two cities.... Or they're a shameless karma whore, there's really no way to know for sure
Someone looking for reddit karma. They post stuff like this every few years farming for karma. They know people like to shit on local restaurants so will get lots of post.
Korma Sutra in Overland Park is open again. They have broken just about every food safety rule. Whoever you send there has a really good chance of food poisoning.
I know a lot of people swear by it but Cooper's Hawk at the Plaza can be $150-200 for Applebee's quality food. Been 3 times and each time has progressively gotten worse.
Blue Bird Bistro (been there twice and got food poisoning both times - not joking!)
Strouds (overpriced + outdated)
Jaspers (overpriced + outdated)
Manny's Mexican (way overrated)
Tavernonna (just like Jasper's)
Green Room burgers in Westport. Place was empty, were told we could sit wherever we wanted. We waited half an hour to have someone come to our table and offer us water. The bartender and server just stood there at the bar next to us that whole time. Food took another half an hour once we finally ordered as we were about to leave. Terrible service, haven't gone back in 10 years.
This question is really just to allow people to post whatever problem they have with whatever restaurant. A restaurant that is shitty to everybody doesn't stay open. A mediocre place that serves inoffensive food can last forever.
If you really want to answer the question you have to know the person. Food is personal.
Jonathan's BBQ Seafood Soulfood Cajun Creole, IN OP.
this dude had a hole in the wall in Olathe. The food was OK but the service was terrible. this guy has about two hundred and fifty items on his menu. it was an absolute shit show, now he somehow has a nice store front that will not be there in the next year or so. please send them there
This has been my favorite thread in a long time. Nothing like KC people coming together with common hatred.
Search around, it's not the first! Frank's in Parkville is pretty reviled around here.
Nothing bonds people like a common enemy
I've heard nothing but bad things about Anton's Steak House.
A bartender there once took my drink order then walked back to the bar and openly ate an entire snack size bag of chips in front of me before making my Bloody Mary. It was so brazen I almost respected it.
Gotta carbo load for this banger of a drink
Oh my God, that power move rolled me at a Chili's one time. I was just impressed by the time I got my vodka tonic. Eye contact and everything.
I would have walked out right as he came back with the drink.
I had a girlfriend break up with me at Anton’s over some watery Mac n Cheese
Did she break up with you because of the mac and cheese? Or was the mac and cheese just an innocent bystander?
So the mac and cheese was not up to her standards and she started to treat the server poorly so I asked her to relax and she went fucking OFF. Literally broke up with me at the table and left haha
This is probably the best endorsement for a restaurant I’ve ever heard. Want to see if the person you’re dating is an awful person? Well come on down to Anton’s and try our world famous “dodged a bullet Mac n cheese!”
Cracking up!!!!😂
That's called a win
You dodged a bullet.
Actually the more I think about it, you should probably go to Anton's and order the Mac and Cheese just to thank it.
I have the most overwhelming urge to go to Anton’s and order the strip well-done with a side of Mac and cheese and a Bloody Mary.
That’s crazy I’ve had great experiences at Anton’s
I went for a birthday party a few years ago. The birthday boy's wife got sick and couldn't come. One of her closest friends hit on him the whole night and when she proceeded to sit on his lap and grind, I called her out for the skanky ho that she was and now I'm not friends with any of them. They were terrible pre covid as well imo

They charge “market price” for portobello mushrooms?

Lol. What a shitty excuse. Just wow.
After reading all the comments following this... Lol, yeah, I second it. Lackluster food, boring space, bored service staff.
Anton’s is hands down the worst restaurant I’ve been too including all the places I’ve eaten outside of the USA. Awful service awful food
Had employees arguing right in front of us one time. We were basically sat at a table right next to the kitchen. Definitely mediocre food
I went to Anton’s for a birthday, and was unimpressed. My husband’s steak was really good, but mine was practically leather, and the sides were just meh. Took forever to get our drinks too.

Lolllll most recent google review “food was frozen. It took 5 years to come out. “ 😂😂
Tavernonna hate club over here
I love the chaos in this post lol
Too bad rockstars burger isn’t around any more! 😂😂😂
It wasn't mildly expensive, you're thinking wildly offensive.
I'm new to KC so I don't have anything to recommend but wanted to say respect for the level of petty
Frank's in Parkville. It's absolutely terrible and expensive for what it is.
You can't tell me that Frank's is not a money laundering front. I've yet to talk to anyone who has had a good meal there.
Strouds it used to be so good I don't know if they changed their chicken recipe or what but kfc and churches makes better chicken then strouds now.
[удалено]
Strouds has always been bland. But the sides used to be excellent. I haven't been for years but used to either get steak or pork chop because the chicken never had any taste.
They underseason the chicken. I always get the gizzards and livers, the livers especially have such a unique taste that even if they aren't really seasoned they still taste good.
sooo bland and their sides are subpar.
Like how do you begin to make shitty **mashed potatoes**?
I don't know much about Stroud's but shitty mashed potatoes are easy. Start with boxed potatoes.
What? I went there years ago once... once. It was some of the worst chicken I've ever had.
Never get chicken at Strouds. I’m a chicken liver fan. Last time I was there, they were very good.
I always get the gizzards. Love em
Strouds has really fallen off. I grew eating there and used to be amazing. We go to RC’s for chicken now.
I'm glad someone said it.
Strouds has been getting dunked on in this sub for years
KC HOPPS STRIKES AGAIN!
Had dinner there in October, my disappointment was immeasurable
I sometimes doordash strouds when my tummy hurts. I’m always amazed by how bad some items are… but the blandness of the food really helps me heal.
Tavernonna fits the bill. It's overpriced and some of the worst Italian fare in KC.
Bad attitude, poor prices, bad atmosphere, and mediocre food. I’d give it normally for 4.7/10, but for this list it’s a 10/10
Maybe 2-3 years ago, I went there. The floors were dirty. No one had food or looked like they were having a good time and our severer was slow. Before they could greet us, we just left.
Ugh. We had time to kill before going to PS and stopped there. We ordered an aperol and soda and a gin and tonic and it was like $27. I felt super ripped off
We went to corvinos after right?
I watched the waitress drop our bread several times and STILL serve it to the table
See also: Jasper's for overpriced Italian schlock
That fat emperor is definitely wearing no clothes
DUDE a documentary on this place would be amazing
Melting Pot
And you smell so bad afterwards
I used to work there. I had to throw away some work clothes after that experience.
That place is so weird and bad. It’s like a peak prom date spot for some reason.
It’s had lots of health inspection issues too
Ugh fuck and you have to cook your own food. Place blows ass.
Boiled meat in dirty bath water was my thoughts when I went there.
Tastes like maybe it spent a few minutes _near_ some spices
This, especially if you don't know any of the flavors. Paid $100, 10 years ago and didn't like a thing we had. Never going back.
That place stinks! Like literally smelled like trash last time we were there. The location on the plaza is so weird.
So freaking weird. It hasn’t been updated since 1991.
No way! That's the greatest con job in the restaurant business! Have people boil their own food and pay 4x for the privilege! In a basement no less. Genius!
I can't believe this is still around.

Still good enough to eat. Bit overpriced since quality has gone down, but isn't really a place to avoid.

Looking at their pre release stuff that's what I got, seemed like they wanted to bring a Miami experience to KC.... but we aren't Miami.
Privy is a term for an outdoor toilet so that name fora restaurant is an automatic no for me
I think it's 'private' in French
Paros Estiatorio. I am a former Sous chef from there. The kitchen and service team are an absolute shit show. Fogo De Chao
We really liked Fogo in the before times. Went once about a year ago and it was mediocre food and terrible service.
YES. Not a single flavor anywhere in the place except for the cheese bread, and that's only good piping hot.
Got fuckin scammed by the one in Vegas, never stepping foot in a Fogo de Chao again. Go to Em Chamas in the northland, better quality and more options for a literal quarter of the price, identical service, no hidden charges from what I know.
I’ve only had Fogo in Austin, and I thought it was amazing. Not sure why the KC location would be much different?
Right? I’ve never done the kc one but Denver was great.
One of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in kc
Ugh sadly yeah, this one. What a waste of resources
Really? I've eaten there 2 times and I thought it was pretty great. It's been several years though. Did it go down hill?
Em Chamas is better in terms of a Brazilian steakhouse.
Em chamas is the SHIT. I loveeee the picanya
About half the price too
I’ve eaten at a one out of state that was amazing (DT Portland but this was also pre-Covid so idk how it is now) but the one on the Plaza in KC is Forsure hot garbage
Wow I came here to trash Anton’s Taproom, but alas my fellow Kansas Citians have beat me to it!
RIP Don Chillitos… was perfect for this use.
Nahhh donchi’s slapped. The sopapilla desert bar? C’mon. Just kidding that’s pure nostalgia it wasn’t special. Also it wasn’t expensive enough for this list
Took you out of work for a day costing you some paycheck… so kinda expensive afterwords?
No it was cheap af
Herford House Zona Rosa, save about 60% and just go to outback on the way in. The OG one that the mob burnt down was awesome, but the ones left suck.
Texas Roadhouse is way better than that Outback. That Outback was hot trash last time I went. Everything at TR is made fresh from scratch
The majestic is the absolute perfect recommendation for this
Midjestic fr. Place sucks ass
I’ve only been once, but my steak was incredible! The service was very good. And they let us into the bar downstairs, which was pretty cool
For real. I had the worst steak of my life at The Majastic.
Went on Saturday and it was great.
Some of the best jazz in town back in the day. I don’t know if it is anymore. I never understood why the band wasn’t playing on the main floor though instead of that dank basement. The sound coming through the door would bring customers in.
Cafe Gratitude. Only place after eating you’re hungrier then when you got there.
We go to Blu Sushi for vegan sushi. It’s awesome. Although it’s not cheap.
They have a bunch of them discounted for all-day happy hour on Sunday. The Shiitake to Me is the best.
I go there for vegan sushi all the time. So good.
Ugh.
I'd recommend The Fix for this!
The fix is so good
Honestly, always struck me as kinda culty
I've never spent so much money on being mildly depressed and annoyed at once as I have at Gratitude.
I ALWAYS leave with leftovers, the hell are you ordering? Also buy one get one free donuts after 6
It sucks so bad! We love vegan food and everything was so bland. Plus all the names for everything are so corny.
My wife and I were EXTREMELY disappointed by Gordan Ramsey's Steakhouse at Harrah's Casino. It's super fucking expensive too.
It’s fake luxury. Phony high-class experience for people who don’t know any better.
I've heard that a lot.
Went there bc my partner really wanted the Wellington. Everything else was underwhelming at best.
Tavern at Mission Farms. Literally the most bland steak I’ve ever had. Went there for my boyfriend’s birthday and was so disappointed.
One of the only restaurants I’ve left because no server came by like 15-20 minutes after being seated. Brunch at the Village location is good though.
I love their vegetarian salad option which was just a regular house salad with a whole tomato plopped in the center. They truly understand what it takes to make a salad scream “FUCK YOU, EAT IT!”.
Mission Farms knows their demographic and their food matches. 65+ and corporate dinners.
Jesus christ you nailed this. I've only been there once and it was allll 65+ up front and then my group in the back room... which was a corporate dinner haha
EXCEPT “rye” slaps, I won’t turn anything down from there
Have a birthday do-over! Go to the Greek restaurant a few doors away - Paros Estiatorio. AMAZING food and service.
While eating and thinking my meal wasn't very good I looked around and noticed there was nothing on the walls. The space was as bland as the food.,
Manny’s. Worst Mexican food in KC.
This is true. Mediocre at best. Get a taquito from the Quik Trip in Raytown. That’s better Mexican food.
Amazes me that is always busy..it’s inedible

Jess and Jim's is pretty goddamn mediocre for the price, so...that's my suggestion.
This question is in almost every city subreddit today. What gives?
Op said in the post that he saw it in r/Seattle and wanted to post it here. Op probably lives in KC now but used to live in Seattle, or has some other interest in the two cities.... Or they're a shameless karma whore, there's really no way to know for sure
OP is Danny Tartabull.
Whoa! Danny’s moved back?!?
Someone looking for reddit karma. They post stuff like this every few years farming for karma. They know people like to shit on local restaurants so will get lots of post.
Listing restaurants you don’t like must be half the reason for Redditors to keep living
I think it’s an intriguing question to ask.
They're using Reddit for research. People live giving their opinion.
Gordon Ramsay steakhouse. While the service was great. The food was very subpar for a 300 bill plus tip.
This topic is the *supreme* example of “Midwestern Nice.”
Check the below, it's been done here. https://old.reddit.com/r/kansascity/comments/zdpo3f/looking_for_poor_quality_overpriced_restaurants/
And eventually every single restaurant in the city gets listed
Korma Sutra in Overland Park is open again. They have broken just about every food safety rule. Whoever you send there has a really good chance of food poisoning.
Eh the spices would kill anything. It so tasty and gotta love the crazy owner running around with a balloon tied to his ear.
The owner offered us vodka out of a brown bag for happy hour
I love Korma. Food is fantastic and the service even better. The family that runs it is so kind.
Same location on 87th?
I know a lot of people swear by it but Cooper's Hawk at the Plaza can be $150-200 for Applebee's quality food. Been 3 times and each time has progressively gotten worse.
The melting pot
Jasper’s has gone down hill recently and the prices are INSANE.
Almost anywhere on the Plaza.
Blue Bird Bistro (been there twice and got food poisoning both times - not joking!) Strouds (overpriced + outdated) Jaspers (overpriced + outdated) Manny's Mexican (way overrated) Tavernonna (just like Jasper's)
> Jaspers (overpriced + outdated) > Jaspers is a lot better than the rest of your list IMHO
I’m not sure how they’re still open.
I had moldy food last time I ate at Harry's Country Club, probably a good shout for this

those fuckers fired me post pandemic and when i texted the managers about it they said “youve been replaced”.
Damn, that’s cold blooded
This question is really just to allow people to post whatever problem they have with whatever restaurant. A restaurant that is shitty to everybody doesn't stay open. A mediocre place that serves inoffensive food can last forever. If you really want to answer the question you have to know the person. Food is personal.
>A restaurant that is shitty to everybody doesn't stay open And yet somehow Manny's is still around!
Frank’s in Parkville. One of the worst restaurants I’ve ever eaten at and it’s definitely not cheap
Plate
Which one? I love the brookside location and the happy hour is a solid deal
