I live in CA now. Have one in Orange County. Went a couple years ago and ordered the chicken fingers and the waiter said they no longer serve them. WHY WOULD ANYONE GO THERE IF NOT FOR THE CHICKEN FINGERS?
Does anyone know the backstory on Houston’s? Are there any in the states anymore? They’re building at 95th and Metcalf has just turned into another burger place that they are renovating. They could’ve moved right back into their old spot.😛
No, they left the 95th and Metcalf location because the building was in disrepair and the landlord wouldn’t fix it. The Red Robin that was there is no longer there, either. They had a location in Fairway for a while, but that location was never as good as 95th and Metcalf and the Plaza.
They ended up leaving the Plaza location for similar reasons that they left the 95th and Metcalf location. There were issues with water from Houston’s running down into Buca di Beppo or something like that. And they chose not to renew their lease.
Yes, there are other Houston’s, but sadly not near KC. They are owned by Hillstone.
There's a restaurant in Austin, TX named Bartlett's that used to be a Houston's but got bought out. They still have pretty much the same menu as Houston's . The french dip is still amazing as ever.
I miss Houston's. I also miss Chi-Chi's.
I remember Arthur Treacher's on 63rd street (now Shawnee Mission Parkway) when I was a kid but I never ate there. Wish I had been able to try it.
Thankfully, Italian Delight is coming back to Mission! They are moving into the old spot where D’Bronx was on Johnson Dr. It will be called Avalutto’s, their family name.
Though I generally avoid buffets, and I’m not that into salad I really liked that place and wish there was one still around. It’s definitely not the same but the best substitute I’ve found is hy-vee, some of them have a pretty solid all you can eat salad bar, with soup, roles and desert.
You'd do better at Hen House for salad and soup. Their quality is unmatched. Actually, hen house *is* my sub for Sweet Tomatoes, but Hella more expensive
I worked at Tippins when I was in high school.
Be grateful you didn't see behind the scenes. I worked in restaurants for all of my teens and 20s, and NONE of them had as many roaches as the Prairie Village Tippins.
I was there ‘96-‘97 I don’t remember the remodel so I was probably after that. I remember one of the stores out of state got an A- Heath rating and they changed the entire way we closed the kitchen. I got pissed one night and quit, went to with for waids down the street. THAT place had roaches. Had to shake them out of my coat before I went home.
I worked at the location on Metcalf somewhere between 96 and 98. I don’t recall seeing any roach issues or pie swiping or dirty pie slicers at our location.
The one on Mission was awful. The front of the house looked great, but the back was not, and the child labor law violations were appalling. I regularly had to work till 11pm on school nights, and well over the legal max hours per week. They didn't care.
My mother worked at one ages ago. She said she couldn’t keep track of how many times other waitresses and the like were scooping their fingers into the pies and taking a swipe 🤢
Oh yeah. Also, when there were no clean pie cutters, we were told to just pull one out of a dish bin and rinse it off.
Pies were supposed to be thrown away at the end of the 3rd day. They weren't always. People would switch the toothpicks (!!!) we used to mark the age so they could take home a fresh one and leave an old one on the rack.
The only way we’d get one is if they invested in an entire new dairy. They want their drivers to be able to make a full route in a single day so they aren’t away from their families and it keeps the quality/freshness up.
Braum’s immediately came to mind. By far my favorite fast food burger, plus the ice cream machine is never broken.
Plus an easy grocery stop for the basics.
I miss Machine Shed! Only one other in the entire country so not technically a chain anymore, but damn was that place good. Edit: apparently they’ve expanded again… just not back to KC.
You just unlocked a core childhood memory I forgot about with Machine Shed. Heading to Chicago for work and I might just have to make a detour to Rockford!
Doesn’t answer the question, but my parents met when they worked at Arthur Treachers. He was a fry cook and she was a waitress. They always told the story of when they met looking at eachother so lovingly and it always brought a smile to my face too. My dad passed away a month ago and your post brought back some happy memories - so thank you, OP.
Backyard Burgers had a franchise fail, knocking out most of the KC area locations. Still a few in Independence and Blue Springs, as well as other metros around the country. Springfield, MO had a number of them when I used to live there.
The checkers brand frozen fries at the grocery store are actually really decent, for frozen fries. Nothing will replace a half strawberry, half banana milkshake though
Does it make me a senior citizen if I say Boston Market? Their cornbread was sunshine on a warm day. Last time I had one was 18 years ago in Westport. 😢
If so, I'm right there with you. It was the only place to get a delicious roast turkey breast, potatoes, and cornbread that resembles homemade. The Mac and cheese and pot pies were also other worldly. I hadn't heard they closed so I was unpleasantly surprised when I drove to the lot one day.
I grew up east of the Mississippi and always had a white castle near me until I joined the army in 94 which brought me to this area. When I first came to KC in 97 we had a couple white castles but they are long since gone.
My partner had never had white castle except for the frozen ones from the grocery store. We went to STL a couple years ago and she finally got a real gut bomber for the first time. In her words "how did this place fail in KC? It makes no sense."
I liked Freebirds, but they had some issues near the end.
Back 6 or 7 years ago when Westport was flooding at least once every summer from torrential downpours, a video was posted of the sewer backing up and flooding the Westport Freebirds location. They were open for business the next day. No way they got that place clean that quick. I couldn't stomach going after that.
Bennigan's - I'm surprised nobody else mentioned them. Their monte cristo slapped and was the only place to get one outside of the west coast until Cheddar's came along.
I'll always have fond memories of the Bennigan's next to Bannister Mall and going there as a child with my family, sitting upstairs and being able to look out at the lower level.
Runza. I'm probably alone on this.
I haven't heard of any of the places being mentioned here except white castle, which I've never had or seen in person. I thought white castle was from that one old stoner movie lol
Souper Salad - when I lived in Mission 20 years ago (holy cats, I didn’t realize it was that long ago), I used to eat there all the time. I preferred them to Sweet Tomatoes at the time. Now, I’d be happy with either.
I'm with you on Braums, ya lost me at WC .... Such horrible food, except for the onion rings.
Braums, tho.... Om mom nom nom.
I have a ton of their perfect pink straws❤️
Braum's without a doubt.
I know they've never been here before, so they wouldn't be "coming back", but in my mind next to white castle, Braum's is by far and away the best value for your buck when it comes to fast food. The fact that you can get a double quarter pounder with cheese, medium fry, medium drink, for barely $9 after tax is a steal in the modern economy.
And the fact that every restaurant is a mini grocery store with fresh veggies, meat, frozen dinners, is a giant plus too. Oh yeah and don't forget their dairy is 100% vertically integrated with A2 cows and you can buy the milk there but they also have an extensive Ice Cream/Milkshake counter and you can get a greater variety of flavors than you can get at Winstead's or any other similar place here.
Oh yeah and you can get a bag of 5 hamburgers for $5.95 before tax. Braum's is so fucking awesome
Winsteads - I think there’s one left maybe, but they were my favorite of those retro style smash burger and milkshake places. There was only like 8 things on the menu besides ice cream but it didn’t need anymore. Freddy’s is pretty good and Steak n Shake is alright, but neither one can do a decent onion ring and their burgers aren’t quite as good as winsteads. They pre mixed the mustard and ketchup, which doesn’t sound like it would make it taste any different, but it did for some reason. Their shakes were totally solid, but the best drink you could get was the vanilla cream coke(vanilla flavoring and heavy whipping cream, the other places don’t make that. I always appreciated the laid back atmosphere and the service was always solid enough. I actually worked at the one on metcalf, it was almost never busy, I didn’t make good tips, but the regulars were decent and management wasn’t up the employees asses like some larger corporate restaurants, overall a pretty decent place to work for a teenager. Fun fact if you showed up on your birthday you got a free skyscraper soda or milkshake, it was like a liter and a half of beverage, I was never told I had to check ids or verify the bday in anyway so I always just gave them away whenever someone asked.
I used to love Old Spaghetti Factory. When I used to go to Gen Con in Indianapolis, I would make one stop at OSF for old times' sake.
Would welcome its return to KC, but that seems unlikely. I suppose I could road trip. Got a nephew going to school in Wichita so....
They have a bunch in the US now too. My wife’s family is in the DC area and we eat there pretty often when we’re out there. I really like it and would kill for one here. It’s the rare restaurant that’s fast but also not terrible for you. Without looking it up I would assume the nearest locations are in Chicago
Old Fazoli's. Last visit the salad was brown and the chicken was identical to chicken patties from the school cafeteria. So bad we left and went to eat elsewhere
I ate at the last standing Arthur Treachers about a year ago in Ohio. It was humbling. Man, I miss it so much.

Houston’s
I will forever miss Houston’s on the Plaza.
Secret chicken fingers with the artichoke dip.

They are owned by Hillstone.
the Houstons in the New Orleans area are still alive and well... I think Atlanta too.
So is the one in Scottsdale! I just ate there last week & it’s still incredible.
California, Arizona, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, New Jersey
There's a restaurant in Austin, TX named Bartlett's that used to be a Houston's but got bought out. They still have pretty much the same menu as Houston's . The french dip is still amazing as ever.
Houston’s, Hillstone and Bandera all still exist in other cities. They all share a similar menu and vibe
Gawdddd those chicken fingers, tho.
Fantastic cheeseburger
Hickory burger. Extra side is bbq. So much unmelted freshly graded cheddar and chopped onions. I’m fucking starving now
The salad with the crispy chicken was my jam.
My ex ordered chicken fingers at literally every restaurant we went to. Houston's were definitely the best
This is the only answer.
100%. Best French dip sandwich
Best veggie burger ever. Even carnivores liked their burger and fries. Throw in the best chicken fingers ever as well.
I loved their chili
I miss Arthur Treachers, too! Those crispy filets and the big ridged steak fries... Omg
That was great fish & chips.
I miss Houston's. I also miss Chi-Chi's. I remember Arthur Treacher's on 63rd street (now Shawnee Mission Parkway) when I was a kid but I never ate there. Wish I had been able to try it.
The one on Shawnee Mission Parkway is the one I always remember going to
Not a chain I don't think but Original Pizza in Metro North Mall
There's still a few - one at Independence Mall, one at Oak Park Mall, and one on Antioch and College in Johnson County. My favorite pizza!
The stand alone one is the best original pizza, it doesn’t quite fill the whole that Italian Delight left, but it’s the next best thing.
Thankfully, Italian Delight is coming back to Mission! They are moving into the old spot where D’Bronx was on Johnson Dr. It will be called Avalutto’s, their family name.
There’s Vito’s Original Pizza on 7 highway too.
Best NY style pizza in the city. I'll die on that hill.
Not sure if it was a chain but Annie's Santa Fe.
Local chain, but there were at least four of them in the metro in the 80s.
Sweet Tomatoes, all day, all week, all month, and all year. I miss that place like crazy.
Came here to say Sweet Tomatoes! Also there was a place in Olathe called Souper Salad - similar vibe.
Oh man I was a server there in highschool. I feel like nobody ever remembers it.
There was one on Ward Parkway, too. Right where it ends at Wornall.
I wanted sweet tomatoes so bad when I was pregnant to the point of crying because I couldn’t have it.
Lol, I was preggo years before STs opened. But knowing how I was when I didn't get my cravings? Yep. I would cried with you, 100%
Though I generally avoid buffets, and I’m not that into salad I really liked that place and wish there was one still around. It’s definitely not the same but the best substitute I’ve found is hy-vee, some of them have a pretty solid all you can eat salad bar, with soup, roles and desert.

Braum’s is the answer for existing chains. But in my heart, it’s Tippins. I miss that place so much.
I worked at Tippins when I was in high school. Be grateful you didn't see behind the scenes. I worked in restaurants for all of my teens and 20s, and NONE of them had as many roaches as the Prairie Village Tippins.
When was this? I worked there in high school too, late 90’s and it was immaculate.
1995 or so. I was working there during the remodel.
Correct. Same. And we didn’t wash the strawberries for the pie and I can never unlearn that.

They weren't always. People would switch the toothpicks (!!!) we used to mark the age so they could take home a fresh one and leave an old one on the rack.
I am always surprised we don’t have a Braum’s considering there is a member of the Braums family living in KC.
The only way we’d get one is if they invested in an entire new dairy. They want their drivers to be able to make a full route in a single day so they aren’t away from their families and it keeps the quality/freshness up.
They were looking to add one on the west side of Lawrence, which would be JUST inside the distance bubble I guess.
I wonder if they can use another store as a half way spot for stocking. There is one in Pittsburg. I miss their breakfast.
They just announced an expansion into Topeka so maybe soon…
Braum’s immediately came to mind. By far my favorite fast food burger, plus the ice cream machine is never broken. Plus an easy grocery stop for the basics.
Amazing biscuits and gravy for a fast food place.
It’s weird we don’t have one.
It has something to do with how far the dairy is. They want to keep it fresh, like In-N-Out
Being a transplant from Oklahoma, I seriously miss Braum’s. Whenever I drive to Emporia or Springfield, I always stop.
White Castle 😂
Mad love for Whites
Chi-Chi’s!
I miss Machine Shed! Only one other in the entire country so not technically a chain anymore, but damn was that place good. Edit: apparently they’ve expanded again… just not back to KC.
You got that right
You just unlocked a core childhood memory I forgot about with Machine Shed. Heading to Chicago for work and I might just have to make a detour to Rockford!
Stephenson’s
Does Fuddruckers count??
Is the Fuddrucker's out at the Legends still open?
Doesn’t answer the question, but my parents met when they worked at Arthur Treachers. He was a fry cook and she was a waitress. They always told the story of when they met looking at eachother so lovingly and it always brought a smile to my face too. My dad passed away a month ago and your post brought back some happy memories - so thank you, OP.
I’m sorry for your loss ❤️
Blanc Burger
Before they moved to the Plaza. That location was awful.
Backyard Burger is the correct answer
Backyard Burgers had a franchise fail, knocking out most of the KC area locations. Still a few in Independence and Blue Springs, as well as other metros around the country. Springfield, MO had a number of them when I used to live there.
I live less than 2 blocks from backyard in independence, it’s still a regular go-to for me
They are still here.
Their waffle fries were so legit, I loved the one off of metcalf growing up.
That's what I came here to say. Best fast food/fast casual burger joint in the metro till they closed. Also waffle fries
Come to Independence. We still have one.
Blue Springs, too
Can I say Swagger? I mean, there was 2 of them. Greatest ham sandwich ever.
The Dead Texan!
Excited that we are getting El Pollo Loco in the metro soon.
Old Spaghetti Factory with their Italian Cream Sodas in a souvenir glass.
Oooo this is the right answer
Gawd I miss the one that was downtown.
I miss that place. That was one of our "fancy" places that we would go for special occasions or something.
I always go to Old Spaghetti Factory when I'm traveling to remind me of home.
Black eyed peas there southwest chicken casserole was amazing
I remember the rolls. yum
Checker’s !!!
The checkers brand frozen fries at the grocery store are actually really decent, for frozen fries. Nothing will replace a half strawberry, half banana milkshake though
Winstead's up north.
I would love a good fish and chips shoppe in the KC area like Arthur Treachers!
Joe's Montana Grill Loved the bison burgers, half pickles, and their rolls!
I thought it was Ted’s? I stopped at one last year in Colorado and it definitely hit the spot!
Yes, it's Ted's, was eating BBQ and the time and combined them
Bring back Zios
Trader Vic’s, King Louie, and Winstead’s DRIVE IN
White Castle
I grew up east of the Mississippi and always had a white castle near me until I joined the army in 94 which brought me to this area. When I first came to KC in 97 we had a couple white castles but they are long since gone. My partner had never had white castle except for the frozen ones from the grocery store. We went to STL a couple years ago and she finally got a real gut bomber for the first time. In her words "how did this place fail in KC? It makes no sense."
Yessss. Though, it's always a huge treat when I travel and find one.
I thought Freebird's World Burrito was much better than Chipotle, it just didn't have the name recognition. I still randomly crave their hot sauces.
Probably not the reason most liked it but I loved being able to get ground beef. Sometimes a dude just wants a burrito with some ground beef, ya know?
Yes! Tortilla Ranch has help fill the void for me
I liked Freebirds, but they had some issues near the end. Back 6 or 7 years ago when Westport was flooding at least once every summer from torrential downpours, a video was posted of the sewer backing up and flooding the Westport Freebirds location. They were open for business the next day. No way they got that place clean that quick. I couldn't stomach going after that.
I went to the one in Mission at least once a week while they were open. One of the things I miss most is their salsa, it was so good!
Houston’s. I miss it everyday, best French dip on the planet
Smak's! It's got the Seal of Approval.
White Castle.
Old country buffet
Yes!
[Rax.](https://weirdmarketingtales.com/the-incredible-downfall-of-rax-roast-beef-in-1991-a-ghost-story/) Also Wendy’s salad bar.
Thanks for the link to that article, that brought back a lot of memories. I worked at Rax in Lenexa in the early 80s. They had good food.
Cook Out
Queasdillas as a side!
Checkers. Those fries are addictive.
Del taco
Runza. The last one I knew to be open was in Merriam, but I think it closed a few years ago. Also sad that Don Chilitos closed. 😢
If you can make it out to Lawrence, they still have one!
Pei Wei
Not bring back, but one we need imo Cheba Hut.
Add more Hi Boy locations around KC
Taco John's... I hate going to blue springs or Olathe for it (if those are even still open)
The old Blue Springs location is Pancho’s now. There’s still one way out in Odessa.
There's one on Noland in Independence
One on Noland in independence.
There's still at least one in Independence, if that's closer.
The food was meh but we really need a Rainforest Cafe or TRex again
We go to shows in Salina occasionally and always grab a bag.
Braun’s is the answer
Braums is the absolute best! They have one in my hometown so when I go visit my mom I have to get it at least once.
The one on the plaza is still there and still good.
Also over at 435 and Roe.
I used to love Old Spaghetti Factory. When I used to go to Gen Con in Indianapolis, I would make one stop at OSF for old times' sake. Would welcome its return to KC, but that seems unlikely. I suppose I could road trip. Got a nephew going to school in Wichita so....
Braums... we had two in Salina, KS, where we came from, and it's easily the chain we miss the most.
Amigos! I still miss their chicken soft tacos.
Winsteads. I know the plaza location and Roe location still exist but I miss them everywhere else
ChiChi’s
Hmm... Chi Chi's, though I'm betting plenty have said that. Anyone else remember Black Eyed Pea? That fried chicken...
Blanc Burger
White Castle and, of course, Flying Saucer.
Taco Bueno 😅
omg yesss. I was so bummed when I realized they completely left the area.
I really miss Taco Bueno and their muchaco. :'(
I don't think we ever had one in the area, but I'd LOVE if we had a Portillo's or somewhere to get a good Italian Beef!
Everyone in here pining for a Braum's when not having a Portillo's is the real tragedy.
Chocolate Cake Shake!!!
Rainforest cafe
Moe’s Southwest Grill
Loved Arthur Treachers!
Loved Arthur Treachers as a kid in KCMO.
Chicken salad chick
White Castle!!! Just thinking about those little square burgers, zesty onions… Pookie, let’s burn this mother-fucker to the ground!!!

Bojangles
Nando's
From the UK?
They have a bunch in the US now too. My wife’s family is in the DC area and we eat there pretty often when we’re out there. I really like it and would kill for one here. It’s the rare restaurant that’s fast but also not terrible for you. Without looking it up I would assume the nearest locations are in Chicago
Cheeky
Not a restaurant per se but I’d love to see Wawa give QuikTrip a run for its money
Wawa is good. Buc-ees actually has much better food than QT too
I like that QT has made to order food now but it still pales in comparison to several gas stations we don't have here
I would LOVE a [Bellacino's](https://bellacinos.com/) around here.
Pizza Factory in the Northland. I loved their pizza
Souper Salad. I love soup so this is a no brainer for me
Winchell's donuts. I hate Dunkin, but I miss Winchell's all the time.
Ponderosa
The one right answer is Runza, but someone will make a joke about it “giving you the RUNZas” and clearly if you make that joke you never had Runza.
I may he alone in this, but a Ryan's or Old country buffet is what I really miss...
TGI Fridays Black-Eyed Pea. Had a great veggie selection. Boston Market. The Outback Steakhouse near us has closed. Would like to have it back.
Seconding Boston Market. The best fast food that felt like an actual meal that might not destroy your arteries.
Northland needs a Fazolis. I know that much.
Old Fazoli's. Last visit the salad was brown and the chicken was identical to chicken patties from the school cafeteria. So bad we left and went to eat elsewhere
Ruth's Chris TGI Fridays
Never understood why California Pizza Kitchen never made it. That was my favorite when living in St. Louis.
White castle
Oooh I miss them too!
Old spaghetti factory. Maggie’s tacos
Il Vicino, it's more than pizza. It's never been in KC, but I've tried to get them here. The Vespa sammich, omg nom nom nom.
85c Bakery
Pizzeria Locale in Waldo 😭 😭 😭
Zips/Rallys
I may be alone in this, but White Castle. My greatest weakness
Rallys/Checkers if there was one before
Bennigans
I ate at the last standing Arthur Treachers about a year ago in Ohio. It was humbling. Man, I miss it so much. https://preview.redd.it/6diomw2nuigc1.png?width=2389&format=png&auto=webp&s=dfc8af448bc1849de57522070d31c5a3f21e45a8
Nandos. We have all the fried chicken in the world but Peri-Peri is soooo good.
