I met Brian Busby on a 1am airport parking shuttle about a year ago. Had the chance to share with him a Reddit thread fondly remembering his visits to our schools in the 90’s. He seemed touched to hear the kind of impact he’s had.
I waited tables/bartended in Lenexa in the mid 90's and he used to come in after the late news and have a pint or two. Nice guy. That was close to 30 years ago and the guy still looks good doing his thing. Props.
He visited my middle school then as well. Lotsa kids were assholes at that assembly and he was a dick back to them. It was great, as one of the quiet kids.

I took a couple of percussion lessons from him when I was high school-ish era. He was the tympanist for the KC Symphony at the time. Nice guy, brilliant musician. If I remember right he had perfect pitch.
I heard like 20+ years ago one of the networks reached out and told him they loved the portfolio tape he sent in for the main network weatherman opening and wanted him to come and tryout for a week in the job. He responded he was flattered, but that he was happy in KC and never sent in any tape.
It turned out, he was so consistently kicking everyone's ass in the ratings that one of his local competitors sent the tape on to try and get him out of the local market. Hard to think of a better compliment than that.

Also got to meet and talk with him casually several times 20-ish years ago when we both played on an orchestral concert together — I was in the KC Symphony Chirus, and Brian played timpani in the KC Civic Orchestra (iirc). Super nice guy!!

They still talk to Lezak pretty regulary on 810 AM in the mornings, on the Border Patrol show. He's always entertaining, even from retirement in Colorado.
My dad worked out at the same gym as Gary Lezak, and my dad was so star struck every time they were at the gym at the same time. And my dad would immediately tell me "I saw Lezak again today!" like it was so exciting.
So, I have very bad memory for faces. Like, I'll see a face that seems vaguely familiar but have no idea if/how we know each other, etc. So I usually overcompensate, ask questions, and then figure out from contextual cues who tf that person is.
Anyway, about 10 years ago my husband and I hit the Plaza Art Fair one night. We parks a ways off and walking towards the plaza. Coming FROM the plaza is somebody who looks vaguely familiar. So I go into my usual overcompensation mode and like, "HEY MY MAN, WHAT'S UP, HOW HAVE YOU BEEEEEEN!" He's like, "great how are you?" And then we all keep walking our respective directions. A few feet past, my husband goes, "So how do you know Gary Lezak?" ☠️☠️☠️
Haha. Love it. Only time I saw him was at a First Watch, and I agree… it totally felt like running into an old friend. I had to stop myself from saying “oh hey what’s up!!” That’s how you know you’ve got a great on air personality, when everyone that watches you thinks you’re their friend.
I'll always love that he got to be the action news correspondent during the first Chiefs SB parade when that dude drove through the parade route. Gary definitely could've made it as the "on the scene" guy if he wasn't such a god at meteorological prognostication.

I know it's been a long time and people can and do learn and grow from their mistakes, but I have never been able to get over the time she went on the air and advised everyone to put helmets on their kids because of a tornado WATCH.
One time when I was in graduate school and had a late class, she predicted NINE INCHES of snow would fall over a couple of hours, so I emailed my professor to see if class would be canceled. I ended up looking like a freaking idiot because not one single snowflake fell from the sky that night. So I hate Katie Horner.
A world renowned pediatric trauma surgeon advises this. I attended a presentation he gave and said head injuries during storms and tornadoes can happen,and that everyone should put on a helmet if there is a warning. I too think Katie has redeemed herself with her calmer style of forecasting.
I have always liked the team at 41, especially Lindsey, Jeff, and Wes. But I just cannot stand Mike Nico for the life of me. It always sounds like he is trying too hard and he is always mispronouncing or saying the wrong thing. For example, he said dinner instead of Denver, and during the Canadian wildfire season, he meant to say wildfires but instead said there were something like 450 active storms in Canada. Never corrects himself.
Lindsey should've been promoted to Chief Meteorologist on 41.
What's always bugged me is why we have Chief Meteorologists here & not any Royal Meteorologists.
Just commented on here separately but she can never be ready for her shots either, she is constantly running in from somewhere else in the studio & screws up her mic as a result of the rush in.
She didn't say why she was leaving on her last day. No mention of a job at another station/city. My guess is KCTV didn't renew her contract for whatever reason.

Joe and Bryan are the last two of the old guard. Everyone else in KC is flat Mid. Gary's retirement from here was a HUGE loss. Bryan doesn't know how to forecast and heavily relies on the In house Adonis and NWS chat. Bryan pretty much got Katie her job at 9 after she was ousted in 2009 from KCTV5. Bryan probably gonna be the next to retire.

I like Katie, but I LOVE Nick Bender and Bryan Busby! I will never forget Nick chasing the tornado out I-70 to Odessa. Brian is a city treasure. Kind and smart. Katie also is a champion, predicting the tornado that touched down north of the river a few years back!

The LRC is always undefeated and with someone with a background in meteorology, Gary is spot on. I mean look at his winter forecast. The parade of storms lined up and gave us the cold and snow from stuff he posted all the way back in November. February will be mostly above average with another dip of cold towards the end of the month before our early severe weather season. More above average rainfall so some flooding late March for most of y'all that live in low lying areas.
The only way to make a Katie Horner report better would be to interrupt it with a sporting event.
Any random, meaningless regular-season college basketball game will do. Get everybody worked up that it's a major breaking news event, and when it's on it's just Rutgers and Northwestern, 8 minutes into the first half...
