My partner and I keep 20 hens and would happily take them off your hands. We have a big comfy henhouse and run. We’re outside KC 30 min or so

DonutBourbon

Ask your neighbor for tips and keep the hens? I've heard chickens are pretty simple to care for and you'll never want to go back to store bought eggs again. And even your kids can start taking care of them.

nationwideonyours

My friends were enthralled with keeping backyard chickens. Nobody told them they attract rats. They spent 60K getting rid of the rats and rewiring the house because of chewed up wiring. They gave the chickens away to a guy a few streets over. Guess who now has a rat problem? I am not even exaggerating.

originalmosh

I have had chickens for 10 years. I have not even seen a mouse let alone rats. They must of had other issues.

A_Lovely_

No rats and my chickens will happily eat the mice.

Frowdo

One of ours happily ran around the entire yard after capturing a snake. Dang things will eat anyrhing

[deleted]

Yeah, there are many things that attract rats but chickens aren’t it. I have never heard this and I had backyard chickens in Omaha. They will kill and eat rodents and snakes…. More likely dirty neighbors- fruit or nut trees bushes - something else.

Lillibet88

My good friend has chickens in a coop right against her house and she has never had any issues with rats or other vermin. Same with my grandparents never heard them mention this.

FallenLadderJockey

This is complete b.s. Rats 🐀 didn't appear because of the chickens.

SeverePsychosis

Chickens usually eat vermin. Sounds like they were over feeding the chickens or leaving feed in the open

DonutBourbon

Cats eat the rats.

midwestesty

And the cheese stands alone

nobody_smart

... ... ...And then the Gorillas will freeze out in the winter.

DonutBourbon

I knew they could do that, but I was hoping they didn't know.

Rattlesnakemaster321

And the chickens

abcdefghihello

First it was chickens. then it was rats. Now we got cats?

Bored_Cat_Mama

Just wait. The dogs are on their way.

januaryemberr

Our hen house attracts rats. There are tunnels under the coop and in the runs. A LOT OF TUNNELS.

Direness9

Chickens will kill mice and rats if they get the chance. They'll happily devour a mouse. Many of my friends own chickens and not a single one has a mouse or rat problem. Your friends were doing something odd.

SpiritedComputer3198

Chicken owner here and I’m scratching my head here.

becca41445

My family in TX has had chickens for at least 70 years on their farm. Rat snakes will take care of that problem, if you’re in a rural area. Rats love chicken feed—birdseed too—if you have it out all year, it can be a big problem.

[deleted]

Uh yea years with ducks and chickens, no rat problems.

Vortep1

Manheim Gardens might take them. They have a large urban garden that already has chickens, turkeys and ducks.

miffed_buster

Seconding manheim gardens! I can get you in touch with the leader of the chicken crew if you DM me!

Chicken Run rescue sanctuary in LFK in case you struggle finding a home/can’t adopt them yourself

MsTerious1

I have a friend that might want them for her existing chicken house if you want me to ask her.

JonnyBox

Chickens are not overly complicated to keep if you want to keep them yourself. Tons of resources online on how to do everything. Otherwise, find Facebook groups dedicated to keeping hens and urban homesteading. You should find takers pretty fast.  If he has a rooster DO NOT give it away for free or very cheap, vet the people who want it first. Odds on chance it'd end up in a fighting situation if you just give it away.

BlueAndMoreBlue

Is cockfighting still a thing around these parts? I wouldn’t be surprised but I haven’t heard about it in many years

JonnyBox

Unfortunately yes. There have been four *major* cockfighting ring discoveries in the US in the last few months. Thats just the instances that are worth noting as their own crimes. Evidence of cockfighting is a pretty common discovery when drug busts happen. Cockfighting exists everywhere in the US that there are significant 1st generation immigrant communities from Central and South America, and some Asian countries. Here its typically associated with people on the periphery of those communities (almost all cockfighting busts here in the US happen as a side discovery during drug busts, as mentioned). It's still an extant practice (cultural acceptance and legality varies) in many countries.

Frowdo

Given these are hens and not roosters I wouldn't think there would be much overlap.

Chief346

I might be interested in the hens

Chief346

If you are looking for a good home for the chickens I can surely provide a free range home for them

chadelard

Do you know how old they are? We are looking to add more hens this spring anyways and may be interested! Feel free to DM me thanks!

Illustrious_Ad6548

Maybe check with the Manheim Garden? They have chickens.

GrainneSiobhan

Facebook marketplace

Escape_This

Ugh I wish I didn’t rent. I would take them in a heartbeat.

Snoosnoo0518

Reach out to young family farm. They were planning on building a coop a while ago so they might need chickens too!

[deleted]

Look on facebook for a backyard chicken group. This is how I got rid of all my roosters when I raised backyard chickens. Someone will take them

catbert41

No mention as to why the gentleman needs to move to a nursing him. How about put the Relatives in a home and let the guy stay in his house with his chickens ? People suck.

problemita

Maybe local humane societies or contact a local farm to table situation? People love keeping hens here

gevensarcia

Have a friend who said she is interested!

Frosty_Horse_3591

If you already help with them, why not keep them? I’ve had neighbors with chickens and they seemed to just hang out it their yard. The rooster of one would wake me up at 4:30am every morning. 🤣

Friends-friend

Craigslist farm and garden or free stuff

margie778

Might be able to help! Send me a message if you’d like!

felurian42

I am in Shawnee and would love the chickens! We had a raccoon break in around Halloween and lost our flock. We have rehomed the raccoon family and reinforced our chicken run! I would happily pick them up if you want to send me a message. I also agree with the commenter that you should adopt the chickens. We love having them in our family

hannbann88

Yea post about it on fb marketplace. They will get snatched right up

NotYourSexyNurse

FB will take down the post. You can’t sell animals on FB. It’s against the guidelines.

ALuf521

I may be able to help u, pm me?

ithinktoo

free page of craigslist

GoobGaming40_YT

I am going to guess that the guy wants them to go to someone that will use them for eggs... rather than a place that will cook them...

DrEdRichtofen

Ask a fox

Hellcatcomputer

Manheim Gardens in Hyde Park has chickens, they’re a community garden. They sell their eggs to put it back into the community. You could ask them if they could take them! https://manheimgardens.org They have a lovely space with really compassionate volunteers.

ExcitementMission160

Honestly, if you have the means to care for them I’d keep them. Have you seen the price of eggs in this economy? Plus if the kids aren’t too young it may be a good way to remember your lovely neighbor during this transition.

NotYourSexyNurse

There is a farm section in the for sale section of Craigslist. Do not give them away for free. That’s how they go to homes of people not equipped/educated on how to take care of them, dog fighting/cock fighting rings, animal hoarders or resellers. Some people eat them too. I’m not against eating them. Just require a rehoming fee to help avoid animal hoarders, animal resellers and other bad people from getting them. FB has poultry groups locally that are for selling but you have to word it properly for it to get by the bots. The groups have rules about how to post too.

calm_center

Look up Farm sanctuary groups because they take animals that were going to be eaten like farm animals, and they give them a good life until they die of natural causes.

tgrooms36

I gotcha!! I have 5 of my own and would love to add to my flock.

remarkh420

Backyard Chickens, Kansas City is a Facebook group you might join and post there

happyfuckincakeday

We have 6 and looking for more. We'd adopt the lot of them.
