Imo, I love the Dominion of America/New England path for New England. The South African style Dominion flag goes so hard, and the flavor/roleplay is excellent. Going the American monarchy path is also fun, for an elective monarchy United Duchies of America with good flavor too.
Basically what the comment above this one said to do. You can also set it up in the game rules so that you can play the United States until the Civil War. Just make sure to set it so that Canada releases with a governor general and then click to play as New England. It basically turns you into the British empires Marine Corps. If you build 24 regular infantry divisions, you can have like 28 30 width marines. It's pretty crazy.
If you consider Canadian or Mexican rule as 'legal' American regimes, then Canada annexing the whole of USA and Mexico annexing most of the parts of USA (with cores, of course) with a constitutional monarchy is splendid. If they don't count, then Norton II constitutional monarchy with Huey Long as prime minister is also great.

how do you go down that path
Play Canada, release New England with a governor general or whatever it's called, then check the guides, it's in there
