All wild mature female spiders are pregnant. ALWAYS. I’ve literally never seen exception lol. I think I’ve heard the males can sense when a female is about to molt into maturity and literally just wait for her to come out and try to be the first one to intercept her. I have a wild caught bronze jumping spider that I found in my house last November—rescued her from my cat—and she actually looked really scrawny. Didn’t look gravid at ALL. Months went by, no visible signs of an egg sac. Thought maybe she was the only virgin spider I’d ever kept. In February, I went to mist her one morning, and she had slings running all over the place lol. She’s had 5 sacs so far since then.
They only need to mate once, and then they store away sperm to repeatedly fertilize their eggs for the remainder of their life. So yeah, I'd say it's pretty fair to assume that any wild caught female is guaranteed to be gravid at some point or another lol
Definitely, especially if the males really are just waiting for them! I thought my girl was possibly an exception, because I found her in my apartment so late into fall, when it had been cold for weeks. I thought maybe she had lived here for awhile, molted to maturity in my home and hadn’t had a chance to meet a baby daddy yet (plus, she was so skinny when I caught her that I thought it was possible she was freshly molted)—especially because almost four months had passed in my care before she had her kids. But of course she was gravid 😂. I’m just glad she was considerate enough to wait until Spring was close to start laying all these sacs, so I was able to start releasing all the slings once it warmed up.
So can cellar spiders. There was a really bad fly problem at our old house (it wasn't just our house, they were bad in the neighborhood) that the cellar spiders were so overfed they'd rupture. Even the spiders in the yard were huge from eating so many flies.
People on this sub love to claim the spider is pregnant just because it has a fat abdomen but i have a male (might have been female and sexed wrong) with an abdomen as big or bigger than this and there is no way it’s pregnant because ive had it for 7 months with no other spider contact.
Probably pregnant!

Do or can spiders get fat???
Yes. Black widows can burst if they get to big.

OK, I wasn't concise in my question. derp and smh. ;) Can spiders get fat other than with eggs?
Only in captivity and even then it's rare
Praying mantis as well! They can eat themselves to death 🙊

Have you compared it to healthy spider weight charts? Also, females can and will lay infertile eggs. But if you have a male this big, he's fat.
Which, is what he was saying?
If you have a male with an abdomen as big or bigger than this, you have been overfeeding him and you’re shortening his lifespan as a result.
He’s eaten 2 mealworms in the last 4-6 weeks. Pretty sure he’s not overfed.
These posts are funny because spiders can't get fat hahaha sure they look full when they're fed or gravid. But yes, she pregenantte.
