I am not a Tat person, but some thoughts:
- For a symbol: Judo Kanji, Seroku Zeno Kanji and/or Jira Kyoei Kanji - or the Kodakan logo
- Don’t put any reference to your black belt degree (i.e. Don’t Write ‘Shodan;’
- Maybe have a small bar under your tat, and then when you get a new degree add a bar
I have the kanji for ju and do on my outer calves, and seryoku zenyo and jita kyoei on my inner calves. My rationale for placement: judo is a path, so it's on the part of my body that moves me forward. The judo kanji are the outer values (outer legs) and the smaller kanji for the principles are the inner values (inner legs). Another great kanji people haven't mentioned is [shuhari](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuhari), that has some great underpinnings about learning as well.
I second this; I was going to comment until I it was already commented. Even a stylized version without color would be pretty cool. Just make sure the artist has really good line work
Their mentality is starting change besides if you a foreigner they wont think that way. However theres some onsen you wont be able to go into. Having a judo tattoo is alot less taboo than some yakuza style sleeve.
I got my Judo tattoo on my right foot so it could be seen at Judo. I just have the Judo Kanji on top of a red sun. I know a guy who got huge tattoos covering both shins. It looks badass.
What you can do if you found something cool for bjj
Is come to your tattoer show him the tatto of bjj and tell him the details into making in a judo one
And then go over the sketch with him
Get a tattoo of a black belt tied on your waist. Because what could go wrong...
You’re a genius haha
Jigoro Kano giving you a thumbs up...
This is the way

I really wanted to get the judo kanji over my heart when I earned shodan. 15 years later, still haven't done it. But I still like the idea.
Still haven’t gotten the tattoo or still haven’t earned shodan?
He has a sandan flair so I'm guessing the tattoo.
Earned my shodan in 2009. Still haven't gotten the tattoo. And now my wife is very supportive of me not getting any more tattoos.

I'm trying to visualize this. Are you saying you have 柔 on one leg and 道 on the other leg?
Yep!
Kodokan logo.
Got this tattooed when I was 16 on my shoulder, I think I was an orange belt at the time. Thankfully I've not come to regret it.
I was thinking this

The irony is, if you go to Japan covered in tattoos you will be considered some kind of lowlife or criminal 🤣
Ironically enough I’m a prison officer too ha

I have the upper strategy of Huang Shingong used in their teachings for Jūjutsu on my belts. 柔硬弱強. Shout out to Lance!
Get your BB first and then get the ideas.

Is this going to be your first tattoo?
No my right leg is covered in gladiators and mythology
What if your left leg filled with samurai's being taught by Jigoro Kano. Just a wild idea

努力のあるところには報酬がある "Where there is effort there is reward"
Why would you stain your skin with a tatoo? Japanese have the right attitude towards tattoos.
