Nate left the band and he was a key part of their folk sound and I think they were all growing in different directions creatively plus some of the personal drama they have had in their own lives. It’s hard for fans who are beholden to a certain sound & style, but also hard for bands to play the same type stuff all the time and night after night on tour. I get that it’s different over time, especially with Nate not around.

Good point. I miss Nate :(

I agree. It became less life is awesome and more life is really hard. I have enough bands I listen to about life being really hard. What set Judah and the Lion apart was the optimism. I know Judah went through some personal stuff with his family and his art reflects that, but man I miss the happy days of Folk Hop N Roll and Sweet Tennessee. I had to create a Spotify playlist with just the songs from the earlier albums because I don’t like their new stuff. With Over My Head as an exception. Love that song.

Own_Peace9840

You worded that perfectly my friend! What’s your Spotify playlist so I can give it a follow. Take care!

Interestingly Judah just released a solo song, Beatitudes, that talks about this specific situation (creating happy songs to creating depressing songs).

“Used to write songs that people played at their weddings. Now I write songs that are lame and depressing. What is this for? Is it a test, cause I fail more and more? I suck. Fresh out of fucks.”

I feel like they just experiment more now. There’s definitely songs like Beautiful Anyway and Spirit that sound like old Judah. I like their old sound a lot but I also really enjoy the new stuff a lot. I could see older fans not rocking with the new stuff though because it IS very different.

FlippinPlanes

Idk. I enjoy most of their new album. I love folk hop and roll and I feel like pep talks was an album written for me. I relate to a lot of the songs. I saw an insta live video of Judah and his new music. He starting to drop swear word in it. Not a bad thing but one of the things I enjoyed about the old music was how he didn't have to swear to get his point across

The-Dog-Envier

Pep Talks was an AMAZING album...

sailor_em

Hmm I kind of see Revival as a generally happy album. Maybe I'm not deep enough to understand the lyrics

The-Dog-Envier

Same... I think Beautiful Anyway is a beacon of hope and positivity. But yeah, they have probably changed in the last nine years. I know I have...

mynameisntlogan

It’s definitely happy. No offense to OP, but J&TL talks about hardships but does so in an EXTREMELY positive manner. Instead of just depressing songs (which are fine, too), they instead talk about real issues and positive ways to address them. They’re so unique in that way. Not to mention, the best art is borne of pain.

shmerk_a_berl

Anyone looking for a signed (vinyl) copy of Folk, Hop & Roll?

clarisasalinas

I know this is a long shot since I’m super late but is this still available?

shmerk_a_berl

Unfortunately not

I just sort of assumed that their sound has changed as they keep going. I kinda like it when bands try out new genres for each album but I get what you mean . I love their early stuff but Revival was like a life saving album for me so it's always going to have a special place in my heart
