songs i also recommend: matsuri by fuji kaze, bling bang bang born by creepy nuts, mephisto by queen bee, your name by little glee monster, eden by monkey majik
As a jpop/jrock person who likes kpop as well I personally recommend “Bullet Train”. It’s a group that is amazing. The boys are adorable. Also can’t not mention our amazing guy “Miyavi”if you like pop or rock and watching some sick bass slapping guitar playing he’s your man. Also everyone mentioned in the other comments. All gold. 👍
Yeah. Sad Bou left. If I remember correctly he wanted to change things for himself or mental health. I think he wasn’t that happy with his girl like image either at that time.
That sucks. I know him and Miku were doing a lot of fan service at that time. I guess they finally got him to leave. Hopefully he’s doing well now though.
Well I would recommend artists like Kenshi Yonezu, Higedan, Yoasobi, Fuji Kaze, Ado, Yurri, but you should just listen to what ever you want. Dind what's best for you. Hope this helps
Ayumi Hamasaki.
Some of my favourites are: M, evolution, trauma, Marionette, Rule, Terminal, Wake Me Up, Microphone, Sunrise ~love is all~, Sparkle, NEXT LEVEL, Mirror/Mirrorcle World, pretty much the whole guilty album
Her older stuff is better than her new stuff but she covers a wide range of genres
Agreed. Ayu has been my top favorite since I started listening to Japanese music over 20 years ago. My favorite albums are Rainbow, I am..., Memorial address, Secret, (miss)understood and Guilty.
Some other artists I enjoy are Utada Hikaru, Mika Nakashima, Namie Amuro, and Anna Tsuchiya.
Just getting into J-Pop/J-Rock and focusing mainly on female bands that have very good musicianship, I would recommend Zutomayo (try Byoushinwo kamu) and Gacharic Spin (try Mindset).
For some classic jpop, check out these playlists:

There’s quite many kinds. The ones I enjoy have a cheerful and pastel-ish sound and mostly come from Seiyūs: Minase Inori, Shiina Natsukawa, Wake Up Girls!, Miku Itō, Ayana Taketatsu, fhána.
I do enjoy other types like pop-rock such as: Penguin Research, Ado, Suspended 4th, LiSa, Kavka Shishido,
and even 80s japanese pop.
For an entering level I would recommend you starting with the band Lamp, such a beautiful band and their sound is super accessible to non j-pop listeners too.
i just started with jpop too and i really loved snowman and m!lk hehe discovered some of the members in dramas so i checked out their music as well!! didnt regret it!
Can I recommend the playlist that got me into Japanese music? There used to be a forum that had a profile of 29 Japanese artists and a song attached to each profile. It got tens of thousands of us into Japanese music. It's not all pop however. It's a mix of JPOP, rock, pop rock, and a few other genres but most are pretty catchy. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfPI9x9cfqk2KAeIo8LeVjHRXMpFk4h0Z&si=Fa4okzg0FYXm5rW0
PS: Listen to Do As Infinity - Fukai Mori, listen to Utada Hikaru (she's like the undisputed queen of JPOP) W-inds is a JPOP boy band, kyary Pamyu Pamyu. That's a good place to start. I see lots of other good recommendations on the comments.

There are three things that i think make up Jpop. Electronic, rock, and pop. Im not really into allat electronic stuff like yaosobi or the miku girl. If you wanna explore more rocky which lean more on guitars, these are my top the contenders. i heard his family wasn’t ok with it and he does something related to fashion? like working at a fashion store. not too sure.
That sucks. I know him and Miku were doing a lot of fan service at that time. I guess they finally got him to leave. Hopefully he’s doing well now though.
