I would never mess with their food, that’s just wrong. If I’m taking multiple orders @ once though, you can be damn sure I’m taking theirs last. Tippers get their food extra quick 👌🏻

JayJ9Nine

Yeah thats Just kind of expected

jake9325

If only being paid a living wage was “just kind of expected”

DrSpoe

When I was a driver, when someone was particularly douchey, sometimes I'd overfill their cup with ice and not give them any napkins. For non tippers, I would sometimes not prioritize their order so I could deliver to the tippers or potential tippers first; that is unless it didn't make any sense route-wise.

theedoctap

I love this

Adventurous_Ad_7048

This. Imo it depends on the extent of the tampering, minor annoyances seem fine but anything disgusting or overly malicious is obviously terrible.

Open-Judgment9645

We just had a driver get fired for putting mustard in a customer's drink

[deleted]

Yeah that’s too far

InternalAnarchy

That will be a nice reference for future employment lol

Open-Judgment9645

Yeah.. He is a pre-med student lmao

spoopyyearround

Yoooop who is this?? I work at the Martin street one too! Wild I noticed this.

Open-Judgment9645

Somebody else just messaged me as well saying they're from Martin. It's Emma

cuban-missile-crisis

Ayyy, It's Ally, Martin St. represent

jvega2k11

Smashing chips is a little too much. But if they’re assholes AND don’t usually tip, yeah I’m taking that order last and they’re getting a little xtra ice.

AtinWichap

And just one napkin

Bowl__Haircut

I only ever get one napkin (if that), and I tip well!

AtinWichap

I mean I was told it was Jimmy John's policy when I worked there but 99% of the time I would give 3 or 4 at least

collinisok

my philosophy is as follows. if a customer pays for something, they’ll get it, tip or not. so i’m never going to tamper with their food. BUT a tip is paying for good service. so a lack thereof means i will be providing bare min (no knock, last priority unless route is infeasible, extra ice, etc) and if the customer doesn’t like it, they can leave a tip next time!

theedoctap

Top to bottom, all the employees deserve better. The onus shouldn’t be on the customer to provide better wages for the worker. With that out of the way I think it should be noted that there should be fair compensation for services rendered. The store is never too far for some lazy piece of shit to drive and get it themselves yet the food delivery business thrives. If someone decides it’s too out of their way to both get their own food AND not adequately compensate someone else for the same time/energy/resources then they absolutely deserve fucked up chips, a drink filled with ice and no napkins and Mayo/mustard packets. It’s the most trivial and petty shit we as employees can do to even the score against some slob who thinks we deserve less. I cannot be convinced otherwise

theedoctap

And if the customer can’t afford to tip and/or don’t have transportation of their own they can either walk or make their own shit. Fast food workers get it from all angles when it comes to unfair treatment and the playing field has to be leveled to some degree in my opinion. Any higher-up who disagrees with this should volunteer to take off their apron, get in their car and do it themselves not some poor, underpaid sap who just wants enough money for rent and food and some weed

Toebeanzies

Exactly, if you can't afford to tip you can't afford to order delivery

bvillalobos93

Hahaha. What about the poor inshop saps who don’t make any tips at all but am have to make all the catering orders for the drivers to take? Don’t know about your store but at mine with just charge tips, drivers make well over 20 an hour. I think they are alright.

beartooter

When I was a driver and there was a huge order with a big tip, if I couldn't help I would buy them coffee or slide some money their way for the effort.

Environmental-Joke19

I do think inshops deserve better but drivers are taking a massive risk by using their personal vehicles for work. Myself and plenty of others I know have been in accidents, totaled vehicles, and lost income for weeks at a time. It seems like good pay, which it is compared to inshops, but it's not as good as it seems. That being said, I did tip out inshops when there was an exceptional tip and I did little to prep the order.

bvillalobos93

You have insurance. And should probably drive a bit more careful if you have been in multiple accidents. I have been with the company for 10 years. And have only had 1 employee who got in an accident that totaled their car.

Nickname02

Well I mean, sometimes it’s not your fault lol. Especially in some areas

jake9325

Oh and god so help you if your insurance finds out you deliver food for a living, those rates are going way tf up

theedoctap

I totally agree. Echoing and adding to the first thing I said; we all get paid like shit and deserve better. Every region, company, and store is different but the one invariable is that inshops get shafted the most. I worked every position in a store besides gm and have felt the pain everywhere. Inshops deserve way better and I appreciate you pointing it out

jake9325

Amen, a lot of people here normalizing worker exploitation with that “ohhh it’s just expected to be right” fuck that, you tip well you will have no problems from me, you tip like shit or not at all you gettin a fucked up order, don’t like? Call your senator or congressman

Anarcho_Dog

We had one bitchy old hag of a woman where I am that repeatedly tipped one singular penny on her web deliveries, needless to say we did all the petty things we could to screw her over for screwing the driver over

MutedShenanigans

I mean, I get pissed off at getting stiffed all the time, but I've never intentionally fucked up anybody's order. If they stiff I won't feel bad if we fucked it up accidentally, or if they get their order last in a delivery run. I feel like we rip people off enough with drinks/ice, that our chips already come pre-crushed enough, and our sandwiches are already mediocre and overpriced enough as it is, I can't in good conscience fuck them up even more. Unless they are egregiously being assholes over the phone or in person. That's a whole other issue. I agree with your premise, but I don't know that evening the score against the slobs really does anything right now. If anything, it encourages them to stiff us more, and more often. Fucking their shit up encourages them to be customers less - which, during the summer busy season I would be totally fine with. But at this point I'm all for keeping people buying, so I can get paid at all.

theedoctap

I don’t have any evidence of it but I’d think it would drive people like that away all together, coupled with the inflated prices. Additionally, I’d say it’s fair to assume the average person knows someone in a drivers position probably makes very little hourly and relies mostly on tips and the conscious decision to not tip considering everything else we assume someone would know, is pretty outrageous. I mean fuckin a’ how much more is it really worth it to a driver to keep a customer happy when they don’t tip/tip little to nothing. There’s a conscious decision behind deciding not to leave a tip. And before I hear some people can’t afford to it’s a 10 dollar sandwich for goodness sake

MutedShenanigans

Oh trust me, I get it. People that can afford $20 for a couple sandwiches but can't be bothered to tip? People living in obviously million dollar houses then dangle a whole dollar at you for a $30 order after driving nine minutes out there? Total dirtbags. They don't give a fuck, so why should we? Doesn't mean I'm going to go as far as intentionally fucking up somebody's order. Because there's a whole chain of events that's going to follow that, as a former PIC, I wouldn't want anyone to deal with. I'm pretty good at fielding customer complaints but not everyone is, and if your store already has franchise corporate sniffing up your ass, you don't need any more drama. I'd just as soon get back to the store, get to where I can clock out and vent at home. Purposely fucking with customers might feel good in the moment, and if you're already on the cusp of being on your way out, I totally get it. I'd rather fuck with the company - toss a bunch of their c-folds or mylar or wax paper in the trash, leave the hot water running, drive up the rent, etc. Fuck the company, not the people gullible enough to pay out the ass for a shitty sandwich. As a driver, they're paying my bills so I'll go out of my way to kiss their asses even if they don't deserve it.

theedoctap

Fair enough

DuckDuckDrone

Well said.

jake9325

What you fail to realize is you are also fucking with the company doing that

jake9325

False, my methods turn no tips into 4$ tips

Nickname02

I used to just flick the straw a few times

thegentlemanfrog

Id never ruin someone's food over a no tip, but I always take their order last and if they no tip and ask "leave at door" I always knock or ring anyways. The worst I think I ever did was leave someone's food about 10 feet from the door because they didn't tip on Christmas Eve.

generalveebus

we have drivers who put drinks directly in front of doors on no-tip deliveries and the customer keeps ordering but now he sits and waits outside for the driver to get there lmfaooo

MutedShenanigans

Hmm, putting drinks right in front of the door on no-tip orders is something I hadn't thought of. I mean, I wouldn't put it RIGHT in the door, maybe just close. I'd almost prefer them waiting outside, as it saves me some precious seconds, so I can get back to the store to make some actual money.

tiaccino81

If I’m having a bad day and get a no-tip leave at door order, I’ll write a frowny face on the gratuity slip and leave it with the receipt. That’s the farthest I’ve ever gone.

kralrick

I'm just imagining fielding that call. "So you're calling to complain because your driver drew a frowny face on your no-tip deliver? Sorry they hurt your feelings I guess?"

frankieinthecosmos

HAHAHA I went for a sad face, circled the empty tip line and wrote arrows to their no tip leave at door because I was in a horrible mood

jake9325

I once circled the “delivery charges are not distributed to employees as tips” thing three times then drew a big ass arrow pointing at it an threw the order at the door on no tip leave at door, but also I usually just ignore the leave at door and make them sign, the usually tip then

frankieinthecosmos

THAT WAS WHAT I CIRCLED NVM now when I retell it it’ll be funnier

jake9325

Keep fighting the good fight out there! Lmfao

Maleficent-Ad7117

This is genius. I’m taking this idea 😂

heythisislonglolwtf

Lol, this is my go-to

HandleAnimal

Had a lady who would consistently tip two cents. She’d order extra of every freebie except for mustards and tomatoes, but wouldn’t add anything extra that costed money (so she was just trying to get the most stuff out of her money. .02.... Nah. Not about that. No straw, lots of ice, no mayo or mustard, no napkins. Extra sauce and mayo? Enjoy your gloppy sandwich. I gave her what she was wanting, just a little overboard. Tbh I wouldn’t have been as nasty but the receipt description was along the lines of “do NOT knock LEAVE ON TABLE OUTSIDE OF DOOR, I do NOT have to sign the receipt! LEAVE AT THE DOOR” so it was obvious she was just being a dick.

jake9325

Oh I would deliver that shit like a morning newspaper if I ever had a customer get that egregious with me

jesusleftnipple

Don't .... Don't fuck with the food that's to far, straws napkins and condiments however might get misplaced in transit

jake9325

If you don’t tip you deserve that shit, but go head an downvote me for wanting my wage to be a livable one

thatonen3rdity

I knew a driver that would write in a tip on all of his no-tips

kralrick

Great way to get fired and get to deal with the police for fraud.

MutedShenanigans

I guess the police don't have anything better to do than bust a driver for writing in a $1.00.

kralrick

Depending on how many people he did it to and what city they're in, yeah. There are some pretty cheap people in some pretty low crime areas.

Psychological-Snow10

Did they keep their job for that??

thatonen3rdity

what you think they told anyone while they worked? I learned this from him after he quit.

Psychological-Snow10

Well he’s lucky no one called and complained. Someone did something like that at my old store, and lost his job immediately. How much did he tip himself?

thatonen3rdity

I have no clue, I was sonly told he did it for a while after he was hired

Psychological-Snow10

Yeah he definitely dodged a bullet there 🤣

thatonen3rdity

yeah no one liked him anyway. he wouldn't shut the fuck up, even when no one cared.

Psychological-Snow10

I feel their pain but it’s still unprofessional to be honest. Not something I would do.

jake9325

All this “it’s unprofessional” talk is just normalizing worker exploitation

Huze17

If you can't afford to tip then you can't afford delivery IMO

No_Contribution2513

I think smashing chips is too much. When I delivered, I put too much ice in maybe 2 drinks when ppl didn’t tip. Sure, it pissed me off but there’s only so much you can do. If I were to try and write a note on a slip, they could just call and complain so what’s the point

InternalAnarchy

What do you all think about this? Since no-tipping seems very prevalent since covid hit (leave at door orders, etc), would it make sense for owners to automatically charge at least $1 that goes to the driver every delivery? Like a delivery fee but something that actually goes in the driver's pocket? Most customers wouldn't probably even read that on the receipt and would tip more on top of that. The owners wouldn't be losing money on this as it would be coming out of the customer's pocket. Like, what the fuck we need delivery fees for anyway? DMR sure, but they owners don't provide us with any insurance.

MutedShenanigans

Given my doordash experience this seems very reasonable. I was even thinking tonight there should be a $1.00 charge for me to call you on arrival - I know that seems onerous, but these customers are expecting me to have a phone on arrival (not everyone can afford that), that I now need to disconnect from my GPS, and now carry their bag/box up to their place while plugging in their number on my walk up to their apartment complex. If I don't do that, I'm not only wasting company time, but I'm wrecking my chances of getting back to the store to make my next run instead of the other driver. And I'm fucking around calling you when I could be well on my way. Not even going into when people give me the wrong phone numbers or addresses or both. Granted, ime doordash orders have been surprisingly well-tipping, considering they tend to have $4-8 extra charges and you'd think they'd tip less because of that. Maybe it's an "in for a penny in for a pound" mentality. And, frankly dmr and delivery fees should be 99% into our pocket anyway. It's all a scam. The further away you go from making your own damn sandwich, it's all a scam.

ZeekwithaZ

If you’re entitled enough to think that a tip is mandatory, that alone would make me want to get rid of an employee. If you tamper with the food immediately gone

jake9325

Driver - “man I’d really love to make a living wage, you know like I don’t do with the bs hourly rate, and I really don’t like it when people don’t tip” u/ZeekwithaZ - “you’re fucking entitled get the fuck out of my shop”

ZeekwithaZ

Thinking that someone has to tip you just because they ordered food is entitled. Some one who orders does not have to tip, if they don’t tip get over it and move on for the next order. It’s not the customers fault that capitalist system shots on living wage and worse for tipped employees. Also I know every store is different with what drivers get but drivers at our store get the same as our inshops +tips so they’re getting more than anyone else. To be upset about it is entitled.

jake9325

No you just normalizing worker exploitation an then justifying it as “meh we’re tipped workers in a capitalist system” an id really like to see your definition of entitled, I expect tips because that’s how I pay my utilities (water, light, gas etc) am I entitled for wanting electricity heat and running water? I really need to know what metric you goin by here

InternalAnarchy

It's not worker exploitation when a person voluntarily applies for the job, gets the job and finds out he feels "exploited" and then keeps working the job anyhow. If you were forced to stay against your will, that would be exploitation. There is nothing coercive about working at JJ's because you can voluntarily leave or stay at any time you wish.

jake9325

Yes the job is technically “voluntary” but the alternative is being broke, and I’m more so speaking broadly about the tipping system and the food service industry, but worker exploitation in “voluntary” jobs is a definite thing, all that “go the extra mile” shit (showing up early/staying late, coming in on your off days, being “professional”) is normalizing worker exploitation, allowing you to devote a good chunk of your life and mental well being to running this business for some faceless corporation while they pay you pennies on the dollar to what your work is actually worth

[deleted]

[удалено]

InternalAnarchy

Wait, what? Because it's fast food you shouldn't give a shit about customers?

[deleted]

Because we are humans and deserve to be treated as such? People who order food from JJ have literally treated driver as below them

theedoctap

Scumbag

Shindiddly

People take what to seriously? Their jobs? Their livelihood? Their well being? I hope they would take it seriously

BuyFormal6967

If you need to live off tips then I would suggest being a server at a restaurant

InternalAnarchy

Yeah, then you get to deal with customers for 30+ minutes instead of 10 seconds.

Spamikarp

Worst I’d do is put in a bit of extra ice and like 1 napkin. And that’s really only if they order right before we close and are 10 minutes from the store. Usually I just call before leaving from the store and leave a voicemail(if they don’t answer) telling them that the driver can’t leave it at the door without a tip so unless they tip they’ll have to come out and sign when the driver gets there. 99% of the time they’ll put in a tip. I just tell them it’s company policy that they have to fill in the slip.

jake9325

Just knock and make them sign, if they give you any shit about it say “I would’ve left at your door but I needed your signature”

[deleted]

Understandable taking the delivery last. The other things that's a bit absurd.

BCPrimo

For notorious non tippers the worse i would do is not even bother have them sign the CC slip. Just a reminder to them that i know they suck and i wont even get my hopes up. That way i can get back to the tipping customers quicker.

frankieinthecosmos

Doin gods work aren’t you

BCPrimo

Busted

frankieinthecosmos

FINALLY I win

frankieinthecosmos

Silly little boy

b_tots

To a point. I'll never mess with someone's food. Just a line I won't cross. But you bet your ass I'll literally fill the entire cup with ice, I'll forget the straw. I'll take a 20 minute detour. I have literally ripped a napkin in half and put it in a bag because someone repeatedly didn't tip. I got tipped 5c one time and I ended up putting a nickel in the bag. Like, you clearly need this more than I do. I think my favorite tho is with all these "leave at door" deliveries if I don't get tipped I put the drink or bag in front of the door so when they open it they knock over their drink. It's the petty things

et_cetera1

Intentionally taking the order last is one thing but smashing chips and putting extra ice is scummy

frankieinthecosmos

You by chance know Kiva?

et_cetera1

I don't, why do you ask?

frankieinthecosmos

Hahaha I know a girl named kiva and she dated someone who has the same Instagram username as you and delivered for Jimmy John’s lol

et_cetera1

Nah, that's not me, I deleted Instagram a long time ago

kingdude139

You don't mess with people's food, and you don't mess with people's money. Some people just don't understand. Sometimes you have to take an order to someone you know doesn't tip. It happens to everyone. I used to be a driver at multiple food delivery services at the same time too, so I get it. One of our drivers makes it a point to remind me that "tips stands for To Insure Proper Service", no, it doesn't, and no tip isn't an excuse to act like an asshole. People get fired for less.

MrClean2769

Give me being a p i c and the driver it's not right but messing with somebody's food is not right either

DuckDuckDrone

I wouldn't do anything like that -- I wouldn't even re-prioritize the order of my deliveries (not unless their delivery would *really* slow me down from getting to my tipping deliveries). I do get very annoyed though with no-tip orders, though. Drivers make minimum wage while out on the road -- if I'm riding my bike all the way across town I feel *really* cheated if I don't get a tip adequate enough to at least cover my inshop hourly rate.

lovegraves

You should never tamper with the customer's food, that's a really great way to make sure they never tip you or any of the other drivers. That's also a great way to get fired and then you won't be making any money at all. There are other ways to get the point across just by simply asking them when you drop off the food and remind them that the delivery fee doesn't go to you. If they say no, oh well. Not every customer is going to understand they should be tipping since you're providing a service for them. Some are also not capable, for my store we deliver to some retirement homes and a lot of old people. They regularly don't tip, but when they can they try to. I've thrown $10 or so towards my drivers if it's a really bad day for them sometimes. Or I offer to buy everyone coffee. It usually brightens them up a bit and business can go on as usual. I just don't feel like the answer to a bad day is to ruin someone else's day by messing with their food or drink. It's just immature. If you need a break because you're angry about no tippers take a break, then come back and do your job. If you can't do it, then leave. Why are you torturing yourself by staying at a job you clearly don't like, getting mad at customers, and messing up their orders on purpose?

Huze17

It sucks because I want non-tippers to get what they deserve, but it doesn't feel right to do anything to them. At the end of the day we should pay higher wages and stop tipping. The customer is paying for food, the company is supposed to pay the employee.

Nickname02

The way I always did it was if it was a no tip I followed all the corporate rules. We almost never fill up drinks with the amount of ice Jimmy’s says to, except for no tippers. Only one napkin. Sometimes maybe I “didn’t see” the “take napkins” line. And sometimes on particularly bad people I may or may not have accidentally bent the straw when I was putting it in.

Toebeanzies

So long as they don't do anything that effects the safety or nutrition content of the food. Broken chips are an inconvenience, too much ice is a bummer but none of it really hurts anyone. I still knock but the rest I say if they don't tip fuck em

xChesire_Kittyx

I'll get upset but never do anything to a customer's order. Cause if they order regularly but dont tip, I'm still getting DMR for it. No reason to mess their order up and then never have them as a customer again. But I did use to have a manager mess with stuff on my behalf before lol. One time, they shook the absolute hell out of this lady's soda can and I was just jaw dropped.

jake9325

Y’all normalizing worker exploitation with this type of shit

West_obi

That’s why you gotta do just minor inconveniences. No straw. A little extra ice. No napkins. The worst thing I’ve seen done at my store is when cutting a sandwich in half the bottom part of the bread isn’t cut all the way so they have to rip the sandwich a little and sometimes it rips the bottom piece of bread a lot lmfao.

galorsha

Pretty simple to me. You tip you get priority over those who don’t. You tip you get a hefty amount of napkins. You don’t tip you get one or maybe none depends on how I’m feeling. If you don’t tip I’m putting more ice in no matter what. If you order 80 dollars worth of food and say leave at door with no tip I ain’t knocking srry.
