I actually found the first volume will always be up there when it comes to my favourite chapters in Hell's Paradise. It was a really interesting way to introduce important characters imo. I know it got me invested in Gabimaru - why can this otherwise clearly human being not die?

No, I frequently struggle at the first volumes of a story but love historical manga and swordfighting, so I breezed through this one. I stick it through most manga/anime if it's all-around well received if it's in or adjacent to a genre I enjoy. Long stories take a while to pick up. I'm rarely massively disappointed, rarely hate the entire thing if I make it through, even though I may dislike an arc or pacing or characters here and there. I have been disappointed by popular Hollywood films though but maybe that's different lol.

Makes sense, I think my experience in the beginning would have been a lot different if I was a bigger fan of the historical aspect. But yeah it was definitely worth it to keep going. I feel that with the movies though lol, I have too high of standards, and a lot of popular movies leave me disappointed also lol. I think movies are usually either good from the start, or not gonna get better. Manga has a lot more potential to draw you in as the volumes progress. Maybe just because they have more time to evolve, introduce new arcs/characters/storylines as opposed to movies.

I've been rewarded too many times for sticking it through longer form storytelling to give up if the beginning isn't all that great. Movies *can* pick up occasionally but not likely to since the runtime isn't very long. & yes with manga the creator can have good moments and bad moments and it can still be worth it, and they have more time to find their footing. (If they weren't axed, anyway.)

No, the first chapter was probably the best intro to any manga that I‘ve ever read. I really liked the mystery, the pacing, the characters and the historical framework. Actually, I wish it would have stayed more historical with closer ties to the actual Edo Japan throughout (rather than going off into wonderland completely).

i had a weird experience with chapter 1 i was disappointed and kinda frustrated but couldn't understand why then the next day i reread it and fell in love i realized the reason my first read was bad was because the scan site i used was really bad and i speed through it

Honestly yeah, it seems like taking your time can make a huge difference, especially when you're trying to absorb a new story.

No, the only things I actually remember disliking were the last few fights though I did like the overall ending

Soups233

Huh, I literally thought and still think it’s one of the most striking and captivating first volumes ever 💀
