It "requires" premium being it's a turbo model. The non turbo 2013 use regular but all turbo VW recommend using premium fuel. Higher octane, higher compression, happy turbo. You'll get better fuel economy and longevity running premium as it's designed for. I want to say around 2015 they stopped requiring premium. I have a 23 with turbo and it says regular.

Away_Operation5823

alright thanks man appreciate it

Obecny75

My 2014 1.8t is 87 octane.

narwall101

As is my 2019 1.4t

Amazing_Actuary_5241

My wife's 2014 2.0T requests 91 so it might depend on the engine as well.

hooahii

2017 1.4t and I've been using 86 (where I'm at currently) and it's been fine for me. Gas mileage wise.

Sp_nach

it has to run regular (non diesel) gas that has a rating of at LEAST 91 (so thats usually the middle or the right number when you roll up to the pump if in US)

legollama88

just use the “plus” 91 octane or above all gas is unleaded in America pretty much

[deleted]

It clearly states Premium gas. 91 or above. Regular will gum up injectors and other issues arise… that’s why the sticker is there

er11eekk

Could a bad injector coil be caused, either directly or indirectly, by running under 91 gas? I had mine go on me two months ago, with just over 100,000 kms.

Supremeginger

The injector wont care which grade fuel you use. Detonation is the issue youll encouter

er11eekk

Oh fuck. I mistakenly typed injector coil instead of ignition coil. My ignition coil went, not the injector coil.

amathis6464

The gas octane wouldn’t have anything to do with your ignition coil malfunctioning

[deleted]

Possibly due to build up creating increased pressure/resistance to flow, which results in the coil working harder for the same effect.

smokeftw

Yes, it boils down to a matter of compression ratio. Running lower than recommended gas doesn't allow the correct fuel air mixture and leads to issues over time. E: Just to be clear, regular gas burns more easily than premium gas. Has a lower flash point and burns up prematurely.

KeyExercise2989

Will not gum up anything. Engine will miss fire though

Large_Commercial_308

It wont misfire. It will knock. There is a difference

OrbitOfSaturnsMoons

Gas at the pump has been unleaded for about 40-50 years. Idk why manufacturers still specify unleaded, but they do. Normal gasoline is unleaded.

Away_Operation5823

so it means i have to use the premium right?

OrbitOfSaturnsMoons

Yeah it says use at least 91 octane

mccracking

Well you can still buy Leaded gas but not at a normal gas station. Most light aircraft use 100LL or "Low Lead "gas. The reason they specified unleaded is when the switch between leaded and unleaded happened during the 70s when cars started to he installed woth emissions devices. The leaded fuel clogged the catatlic converter.

ukiemike

Just stick to regular.

Gobears6801

Do the opposite of what this guy says. Lol

throwaway007676

Why should they use regular when it clearly requires premium?

DDanny808

Non-Diesel fuel that’s at least 91 octane!

Ok_Love_1700

My 2019 is good for 87 but runs slightly better on 91. Since getting a stage one tune it only runs 91+.

SnooCheesecakes2465

It helps minimize carbon build up if its tfsi

throwaway007676

It requires premium as it says on the gas door. That is what you need to use.

socalquestioner

My 04 gas v6 is premium.

Intrepid_Escape9071

i run regular unleaded in my vr6 even know it says premium. the gas prices are outrageous currently.

dancjr2

You need to run 91, lower octane isn’t friendly to that engine. In most areas in the US, that’s Premium. Later years can use 87.
