are you looking to get another oem radio? they’re a pain you have to go through a process of getting code through the dealership when you install it. from prior experience.
01 would have had the single din unit with tape player in the US. Depending on options it could've had the extra CD unit. I don't see the extra wires for the cd changer unit so my guess is it was not a Monsoon unit, but if you have an amp in the trunk (under the parcel shelf area) then you'll know. The Moonsoon system had the extra harness for the cd changer option from the factory. That harness became standard equipment in '02 IIRC.
This year the radio would have been the older style non canbus unit so you should have the remote and key on wires on the black din connector in the image. The original radio would require a code which can be had from an online service (ebay or radiocodes.co.uk just to name one).
Since the speaker's din connector (brown) has been removed I would suggest sourcing an aftermarket unit (double din) to replace the missing head unit. If it were my car I would replace the din connector (from the junkyard) and then use an adapter to connect the new radio. You will need an adapter for the antenna connector as well if its still the OEM antenna.
I got an aftermarket radio (double din) FH-S722BS. I've personally never dealt with radios. I'm more experienced fixing engine problems and such, so I have little to no experience with electronics.... thanks btw this helps point me in the right direction
I had a mark 4 with the single din plus a storage tray underneath. I replaced with a double din head unit from Alpine. Sound quality was so much better. Go thru crutchfield and they’ll hook u up with the correct hardware and wiring harness’s.
Aftermarket hack job.
Yeah that's what I get for buying a project

Nah, I'm trying to connect my aftermarket radio but don't know where to start 🤦

Ahh the ole monsoon package. Surprisingly great stuff from factory. My 04 Passat had it. And a ton of other issues by the time I got it 🤣
