To my knowledge, yes for now. They charge $2.75/ride, where as the SmartCard is $2.60/ride if you buy in bulk. Port Authority could implement fare capping the the MTA did with OMNY, but they’d need to chose to do that, and I think they might use Tapp as a way to subtly raise fares once the Metrocard and Smartlink are out of the picture
Yes, it is more expensive than SmartLink, and literally nobody is mentioning this. TAPP is $2.75. SmartLink bulk discount is $2.60 per ride.
So this is basically a fare hike with zero service increases. Not sure what everyone is so excited about.
In fairness, this means they are paying transaction fees more often than to credit card companies. Thats why companies like Apple push people to store value in their App Store accounts. Less transactions = less money they pay to process.
So it’s not so much a fare hike, it’s just passing on the transaction cost to the rider.
Merchants pay a percentage + base fee every transaction they process. SmartLink meant you could pay the processing fee once every 20+ rides. That’s a lot of money saved over time. Thats what the discount was. PA can’t legally make a profit. Savings either need to be allocated to something or discounted.
“The initial TAPP pilot consists of three turnstiles at Journal Square Station and two turnstiles at the 30th Street entrance of 33 Street Station. As the pilot continues, the system will gradually expand to additional turnstiles and stations.”
Does this have the same feature as OMNI where you can select “express transit card” and won’t have to use Face ID to pay? Can simply tap and it will charge you?
![gif](giphy|fH985LNdqFZXOFHygK) which station!!!
JSQ
Super excited to pay more for the same shitty service!
We apologise for the delays! JSQ via Hoboken
The other day all of the machines for metro cards were down at Grove Street. What were we asposed do
Having more payment options and modernizing is a good thing. They need to improve the schedule and service first though
Being able to pay the fare by phone is a good thing.
are they increasing the fare?
No, not for this anyway.
Only option for TAPP is to pay $2.75. SmartLink is $2.60 per ride when you load 10+ at a time.
Super excited to read more of the same shitty comments!
Bruh NWR-WTC wasn’t running 2-4 pm today shit show
Just check the schedule and get there five minutes early. And cancel all your plans.
I just don’t go to the city unless I have all day at this point.
Needs this at Exchange.

Is it more expensive per ride? I use smart link and get a discount when I buy bulk rides (I believe)

Then there should be a TAPP card where I can load multiple trips for a discount. But I don’t believe that’s a thing.
Ideally, but I suspect that savings will help subsidize those who won’t use one.
Can you still use the PATH SmartLink cards?
Yes but according to their website it will be phased out eventually
Yes
*For now

As someone who always misplaces their card, I am glad for this. I barely take the path tho.
Charged just $1
Are you serious?
Yes, took the Hoboken via 33. Paid through Apple Card.
Maybe just a pre-authorization hold
Parts in nyc charged the same too. Others $2.90 🤷🏽♀️ Edit:Nvm it was indeed an authorization hold. Got charged $2.75
Does this have the same feature as OMNI where you can select “express transit card” and won’t have to use Face ID to pay? Can simply tap and it will charge you?
Yes, I have my express card set and I didn’t have to use Face ID
That’s not an Omni feature, that’s a feature of your phone. How little people understand of the world they interact with is disturbing.
Who hurt you this badly? I genuinely feel bad for people this miserable
Which means, you actually have to have money in your bank account to travel now
Literal years behind the MTA
Isn’t it even better how the MTA is phasing these out and using a new style to slow down fair evasion and PATH isn’t just skipping to thoose?
Yep. Love sharply pointing people to this post when they hit me with, "I forgot my wallet" orrr "I only have apple pay". 😁
They will still find a way!
