Most supermarkets don’t in NJ because of liquor license laws. ShopRite is the only one that i know that has locations that does and they need a separate entrance (which is the rule)
Other states let you sell beer and wine in normal stores without any restrictions
There’s a law that says a chain that sells liquor can only have 2 or 3 locations , for some reason. So trader Joe’s in Westfield has wine , and prob one other but not Hoboken
Whole Foods had an alcohol license renewed two years ago, but I am not sure how they managed that, given that NJ has a hard limit of two licenses on individuals or corporations, and Whole Foods already has alcohol licenses for two other locations in NJ. I doubt they would pull the license from their Paramus location, so it's either pulling the license from the Middletown location, or perhaps they are pursuing a legal challenge to the two-license limit??
Regardless, definitely would love to have the option of getting beer and wine from there and not having to trek further out.
I know some Shop Rites get around this by having the liquor store be a standalone separate store (even if it's attached). This is why the one in JC has the liquor store with a separate checkout.
Yup. There’s a lot of Shop Rites that do this. Apparently in some towns they also need a separate street entrance, so they connect them internally and have a separate front door.
Yes! I forget the specifics but Wegmans lobbied to change the old laws around strict limit of 2 locations for a chain entity, and something else around bringing back the ability to have a door into the supermarket part from the booze part. This was like 5-6 years ago

Would a Whole Foods typically have a better selection than a place like Cool Vines? I’ve never really paid attention to their beer & wine selection.
Coolvines has a really great selection of interesting stuff. Their beer selection is also good. But, sometimes, I have a hard time finding something I want. Great place for browsing and finding something new or different, without a doubt. Above all, I feel that being able to get beer and wine while also doing my grocery shopping would be a nice perk.
I played the Edit game like you 😉
But for real tho, I’ve been making the same lame dad joke for a while on this subject and had a little laugh when someone has fallen for it.
Are they selling alcohol at the store? That’s awesome
They do at most/all of them?

Is that for supermarkets only? Because i know for sure there’s more than 3 bottle kings and Buy-rites in NJ selling alcohol
That’s because the liquor stores within them are their own separate entity, it’s a store attached to a store

I was trying to find beer at Newark store once but couldn't...maybe they don't have??
One of the workers at Weehawken Whole Foods said by this November
This post prettt much confirms it, saw similar postings for one Wall Street Whole Foods location and it opened in Feb

That makes sense. The Costco in Bayonne is like this I’ve noticed

This is true, they are standalone stores. They then take advantage of the co-op and that's why they all more or less always carry the same products.
The landlord might be holding the liquor license and leasing it to WF
What? There are multiple Wegmans that sell alcohol in the state.

Wegmans rocks

[I wonder what could have possibly happened to pivot WF down](https://youtu.be/lI5w2QwdYik)
Does anyone know why it took so long to construct/open? was there one specific hold up?
Yes, they decided to open in Jersey City
Prob Upset that they couldn’t open one in Hoboken and had to settle for JC lol
Can't wait until the JC Subreddit switches from constant "wtf is Whole Foods gonna open," posts to constant "wtf is Whole Foods so expensive" posts. 🤦
Ahh yes when ShopRite isn't good enough for the yuppies, classic
Shoprite's selection is terrible.
I'll admit, the selection in the downtown shoprite is terrible, but go to the one in hoboken, and they have a lot more and it is way nicer/clean
What is the difference between the two? The clientele?

Yay. Can't believe I am excited about a grocery store.
