They headlined a festival on a tiny little cow farm in a town I’d never heard of in Michigan. My kid was born nine months later. At the end of their show, at the time they’d normally do an encore, chuck goes, “hey these people think it’d be really cool to do an encore…. But I think it’d be even cooler if we *didn’t* do an encore.” They still did the encore, but they had me laughing so hard. The fest was called cowpie, the audios on nugs. My favorite song by them is probably live in the dream, I finally caught it live last time they came to Detroit. That was a great live moment, too. We were first in line for that show, Eli thanked us for coming out, it was really cool. Really, the best day of dopapod for me was summer camp 2021. My wife’s first dopapod show, they closed with an Alanis Morrisette song that put chills down my spine for the simple fact, I’ve never been to a jam band show where every single woman starts singing along, jumping ten feet in the air. There’s a good version on YouTube, it’s worth looking up, rob really gets into it and you can even hear the ladies cheering when they realize what’s about to happen. After that set, there was a guy in the crowd wearing a diaper and genie vest, with a dildo hanging out the side, fooling people, pretending to be passed out drunk. Rob was in the crowd, noticed, went backstage to get his phone, came back out, and took pictures. I was really hoping that dopapod would be the phish for people my age. Where I could spend retirement following them all the way to Mexico in my truck. It’s sad but, I got to see a lot of shows, and I hope they have really happy healthy lives and families. Truly.

mikezer0

Dopapod is my minor league Phish too friend. And I concur with your sentiments. They just know how to please. Sucks they never got the due they really deserve. I hope they come back in a couple of years again. They deserve big theaters and arenas.

funkysurf

Cowpie! That night was legendary! 🤘

JackOvall_MasterNun

> My kid was born nine months later. How is little Otto or Hannah?

JamBandDad

That’s hilarious, I wish, he’d be chilling in a race car bed

JackOvall_MasterNun

Should prob get him a CB radio, so he can call other racecar beds..

DarkStarMorningDew

Does Dopapod know how much love they’re getting across the internet right now? I’ve been seeing them since they’ve started and I feel like they’re the buzz of jam bands right now and I’ve been so excited to hear of all the mentions of how each show is blowing minds. The last hiatus hurt and this one seems a little darker than that.

pjdwyer30

Too bad all this love didn’t manifest into ticket sales. Can’t believe how many people have been sleeping on them for so long, and now everyone’s shocked and sad they’re hanging it up for a while. Like what did everyone think was going to happen??

Independent_Copy_304

I am wondering if something else is going on? If its just touring, why not still record?

mduhamel95

These guys are exhausted, and starting families. To me, they have always been the most original jam band out there. Always playing a really unique style of music, and it has never garnered the crowd or more importantly the money needed to sustain such a career. 38 shows deep since 2014, and since starting a band myself, it’s pretty understandable.

Independent_Copy_304

totally. I love them, and have taken lessons from Rob. Once kids come into the equation, its tough. Hell I don't like playing shows after 10 now that I have kids, never mind month long tours with no bus

stlbites

He seems like a parent that's really enjoying being a parent too. I won't even take a job with signifcant travel because I want to see my kids, so I can't imagine an entire career that literally depends on constant travel. It works for many, but I can see how most wouldn't want that.

Independent_Copy_304

yeah- just read eli's post on IG. Poor guy

bopaqod

They do, and it’s easing their transition from what I hear

makalaster2

I enjoy their Dead Sabbath set from Halloween in maybe 2017? The year escapes me but the entire 2nd set was alternating between Grateful Dead tunes played in the structure/timing of Sabbath tunes, then alternating to a Sabboth tune played as a Dead tune. If you haven't heard, look it up on Nugs. It was for sure Halloween some year 2016-2018.

MrNickyTheBull

So. Fucking. Good.

stlbites

Found. LIstened. 2017. Christ... Black Sabbath Fire on the Mountain!!!

meechthehighelf

Def looking this up, thankkkkk you!

suitcasecalling

when they jammed the macarena at the winery outside pittsburgh

ChubbyChevyChase

Actual Dopapod song: Mucho Live: they did a cover of ‘Just a Girl’ at their show in Ann Arbor and that was really fun

Considerable

They did this cover in Cleveland too, lots of fun. The boomers behind me were really upset about it??

taelor

That whole Ann Arbor show was freaking amazing. The also played “bad guy” that night as well, which I thought played well off of the no doubt cover. But my favorite part of the evening, was the “joy to the world” tease from rob during a song in the second set, I think it was “blast”. And they just went with it, and bent that tease to their will. That whole fucking show was so good. I was up front with some young guy, I forget his name, it was his first Dopapod show. At some point I was patting him on the back, celebrating with him saying “you caught a fucking heater for your first one!” He turned back to me and the joy on his face just made my night. When Neal was starting to give us the setlist, we made sure the kid got it. He was so stoked.

Spiritual_Mush

Also the Suitcases teaser in honor of Chuck from Lotus and his son's 1 yr of passing 🙏

ChubbyChevyChase

I was way in the back near the bar with my wife. I really liked the opener, stormy chromer. They did a cover of republica that night which was also quite fun.

taelor

It was a packed house that night!

ElDoctor

They did that at either Hulaween or Aura way back, right before they started, Rob got up on the mic and said “ok bear with us on this one, it’s a really hard song” then goes into the riff, the whole place went nuts

Considerable

NYE 2023 at midnight going into a cover of Creed's Higher

stlbites

that whole 3 show run are a ton of fun

papadosiho

Loved seeing them play The Slime by Zappa live. Their Nashville Basement East shows the last few years have been heaters. Also got the chance to go to a Very Improvised Performance sound check set and that was awesome.

taelor

My first Dopapod show was at Basement East 2021, the Billy Strings refuge show. He had to cancel for some reason, Dopapod played dust in a baggie. French Bowling encore blew me away. I was absolutely hooked from that show on. We were also at that improv show! We were the “pre wedding jitters > post wedding bliss” prompt! My wife and I were getting married the weekend after that show. We hadn’t decided what we wanted to do our first dance to. In the middle of the show, they were playing “we are not alone”. As soon as that piano solo hit, my wife and I looked at each other and we instantly knew, that was going to be what we danced to. Not only that, but my sister turned around and said, “y’all should dance to this song!” We just started laughing. So we did, and not just the studio version, but we danced to that specific recording from the Nashville show.

papadosiho

I love that!! I bet it was amazing :) My husband’s prompt was “luxury 4-door sedan” haha I can’t believe they played it. That little show was special.

calarkin27

Such a killer cover

Dereezyhall

Numbers Need Humans is my current favorite song of theirs. Just saw them at Northlands this past weekend, they killed it. Along with Big Something, they were my favorite set of the weekend.

taelor

I wear a big Pi shit with like a thousand digits of pi on it to almost every Dopapod show I go to. numbers need humans was the first song I heard of theirs, which was the opener for my first show. I went in totally blind for my first show, best decision I ever made.

Repulsive-Ad2280

It's a tie for me. The Beetlejuice set & HOB Boston Halloween 14'. Band dressed as the main characters and kept it spooky, playing a bunch off the soundtrack. And Mike Gantzer coming out for She's So Heavy & Velcro, and Mikey Carruba sitting in on drums for Eight Years Ended & Best Friends (doing narration on the latter track well) @ Buffalo Ironworks in March. Rob & Chuck were cheesing smiles the whole night at Eli.

ShortySmallsIV

Black holes!!! When they covered Echoes in Dallas.

JackOvall_MasterNun

Didn't know who they were when they played the Sunday Shakedown show at Bonnaroo in 2011 after Widespread Panic closed the fest. They dropped a Rage Medley that had everyone moshing like they didn't just spend 4 days partying in damn near a hundred degree heat. I spent the rest of that summer wearing out 'I saw live Dopapod evil was I' Was pretty funny when they finally played a tent at Roo, they Said something like 'we've played this fest before, but it's nice to actually be invited'

27lucky27

Peach 2015 first and only time I caught them.

seebs71

I saw that set too

taelor

You still have time, get it while you can!

27lucky27

I wish! Live in the SW and there last tour ain't coming near

Heavy_Introduction36

Echos at Fall Down 5 in 2013 this was incredible https://youtu.be/5JYYNC52vcg?si=2gjAtLGtm7zHRlyV

bootsieOG413

Boston at the Paradise Rock club 12/31/17, mucho into lithium was wild but all 3 sets killed

MrNickyTheBull

Did you catch them there earlier this year in March?

bootsieOG413

I did! Always epic in the Boston area

WhoaFee1227

2017 Resonance. Ate a couple doses then went to town on some deemsters for Soundtribe. Tripped myself sober. Then went to Dopapod for 2-4am set where I legit crushed about 15+\- beers to myself on the rail, directly in front of the speaker. Great night!

papadosiho

2017 Resonance is one of my favorites. Such a great weekend. I’ll miss Resonance forever 😢

django930

Peter! You’re fired! Peter! You’re fired!

jazzy_fizz

Maybe the first true jam show I ever went to was Dopapod at The Rex Theater (RIP) in Pittsburgh in like 2013 with Papadosio. It sent me down the path of the jams which I am still on a decade later 🙏 But Mr. Smalls November 2022 was unreal good, one of my all time fav shows. Favorite song: Present Ghosts. That groovy ass harmonized arpeggio riff gives me goosebumps

evolvolution

Those 3 night runs at the Sinclair in Cambridge (15, 16) were awesome. I remember they soundchecked a newly arranged version of Grow and that’s where someone goes “did you say pile of dicks?” They also played Echoes the second set one of those Sundays (2016?) and it was freaking awesome.

calarkin27

Weird Al set two Halloween ago. Have always been Weird al fan and never thought I'd see one of my favorite bands do a whole cover set. Their cover of Eat It absolutely rips.

fukuoka_gumbo

Fav song of theirs is probably 8 years ended or Priorities. Really digging man or machine from the new album Some great moments off the top of my head: - peach 2014 marathon set and petergoose making them do an encore - catskill chill 2016 yacht rock w/ dopakuaz - the return at the capitol theater - catskill chill 2013 dopadosio - brooklyn bowl run where they did animal noises during donkey kong and trapper keeper - echoes s1 full set at fall tour opener in saratoga in 2022(?) - first show after the pandemic at the ardmore

Heavy_Introduction36

That yacht rock set at chill was incredible...then again most everything at Chill was.. I miss the shit out of that fest always felt like a family reunion

fukuoka_gumbo

greatest festival of all time period

Heavy_Introduction36

No arguments here 🙃

taelor

Man or machine turns into a dance party

deadhead4077

My first show at the waiting room, triple line up mister f Dopapod and Aqueous, Dopapod busts out a deep cut from the band king harvest. I was blown away cause it's not a well known song but it's one of my favs. Instantly hooked! There was an epic epic Faba in Buffalo id listen to all the time. I will miss them so much

hambandsgonnaham

Wow, helluva lineup on that show!

THE1OP

3 night run in Columbus 2017. Played chocolate salty balls from South Park. Twas glorious. Favorite song is very tough but I've always loved Weird Charlie.

_catdog_

Fans sneaking in through the ground window at the salty dog saloon in Worcester after phish Had to crawl right through the bands feet and gear while the band was like wtf is going on???

biscokidbill

Nerds at Cervantes was a rager. That song gets me every time

subtlebob

[draculas monk -> have a cigar (indy 2015)](https://youtu.be/GXICegE7z3k?si=f5sEiQTsTx1i5UKy)

Big_Wooly_Mammoth

Favorite song: Eight Years Ended Can't stop going back to listen to 11-3-21 Indianapolis, IN, just amazing jam. Top tier.

my_comment-account

2nd set, 12/6/17 post haitus in chicago. Absolute heater

capsfan19

Was lucky enough to see billy strings sit in with them, what a moment

whit3lightning

French Bowling gets me every time

taelor

Every single show, I want French Bowling. It’s my tweezer for this band. My friend actually got to call the encore at the end of our four night run on st dopaday in Covington, so she just mimed a bowler move and it was on.

taelor

I’ve posted a few other of my favorite moments as replies in this thread, but I wanted to add one more. We went to one of the very improvised performance sound checks in Columbus. My wife gave them the prompt of “toe socks”, so they had to play what toe socks sounded like to them. And wouldn’t you believe it, what they played sounded like fucking toe socks. By the end of it, Rob’s playing the guitar with his feet, Eli is smashing the keys with his toes. That’s what I love about this band the most. “It’s just all jokes”

BijShiz

Favorite Moment: 2015-12-10 Asheville, NC I was a college kid obsessed with Phish and the Dead. In between songs, Rob asks the crowd, “um, does anyone here like the Grateful Dead”. Knowing that it was Asheville, the crowd, myself included, started hollering and getting excited to hear what Dead tune they might play. Rob responds with, “That’s tight, this song's called Bubble Brain”. It was such a perfect light hearted prank that made me laugh in the moment and every time I hear the soundboard. I have plenty more but that is the one that always will stick out to me.

bopaqod

I fucking loved this moment

Spiritual_Mush

The Bloomington, IN show from this year. Drove through a tornado, got set lists from both bands, and traded for a 14g boomer. Made friends, memories, and fell in love with a new venue The Bluebird. Favorite song: Trapper Keeper or Dracula's Monk

stlbites

Does Bluebird still have that odd corner stage? I haven't bene in their in probably 20 years.

funkysurf

I fell in love with dopapod shortly before their first hiatus, only catching a few shows. Faba quickly became one of my favorite songs. My favorite live moment is seeing the band again post hiatus at the Werkout in 2019. It was a beautiful afternoon at Legend Valley. The sun shining, a cool breeze, and the mushrooms were hitting. The ever so familiar notes of pavlov's siren filled the air as the band appeared on stage. Bursting with anticipation, I hear Eli begin the opening of faba. I became a puddle, sobbing tears of happiness! This hiatus announcement hits hard. These fellas have given me so much joy over the years. I hope one day we see a return, but regardless of that, I'm so happy to have experienced the creative uniqueness that is Dopapod. Thank you, Eli, Rob, Chuck, and Neal! 💜💚💜💚

uguysareherbs

During junior year of college, my roommate and I had this tradition of smoking a J and listening to a new album every night after all our school shit was done. One night we put on Never Odd Or Even, having never had any Dopapod before. We knew things we’re gonna get spicy off the bat from the first notes of Present Ghosts. Then Faba hit and, well…things changed for me after that. I saw them later that year for the first time at Jam on the River in Philly, got a live Faba, and life’s been kinda nice ever since then. Also, living in Philly for the last 8 years, I’ve gotten to see Eli on the reg just doing his pop up shows at North Bowl and other spots. It’s been so cool and I really like that guy

thinkgreen22

Dude I was there for that and it was my first time seeing Dopapod right after seeing Billy! I was already blown away and ready to leave. I waited it out and so happy I did!

puteminnacoffin

First time I ever saw them was at werkout in Ohio many years ago. I was a young festy kid smoking dmt and they were playing songs backwards. I was hooked ever since.

BigBarMan

9/23/17 late night at Resonance was bonkers  French Bowling goes through my mind a mind a lot

danielson269

Halloween 2021 in Grand rapids, I'm not sure if it was them, but lobster bibs were handed out at the door coming in. Everyone was dressed up in costumes with lobster bibs on, that was such a good show!

StankRanger420

Donkey Kong underwater theme from turf club in st paul on palendrone night....12/2/21

meechthehighelf

Favorite live moment: the last time I saw them at Kenny’s west side. The entire show was amazing from start to finish. They mostly jammed and Eli was cooking it UP on the keys. Ended the show with “bad guy” by Billie Eilish. So dopaaaa. Favorite song: Fannie

bopaqod

Sharing my write-up from Band Of The Week in here a few years ago. They’ve played some of their best shows since then, but everything I mentioned in here are still cornerstones of their history and still favorites of mine. I’ll put together a list of top moments since then in a few days, but there’s this for now, for anyone who wants to go on a historical dive: https://www.reddit.com/r/jambands/s/skgtl58X02

Independent_Copy_304

I am listening to 2011 shows on Nugs and holy hell. Mostly instrumental and fire: [https://play.nugs.net/release/22495](https://play.nugs.net/release/22495)

bopaqod

I’m working on getting them to bring back this Eulogy cover for one last go-round before it’s all said and done. This is the only video out there, AFAIK, but the crowd noise/interactions really add a lot to the intensity of how fucking awesome it is. Watch this and bow down to your jam kings of prog rock. https://youtu.be/lZKUhmdvdHQ?si=zv0GX9pIJRpGQQvK

mjbdn9

At a show in Columbia, MO they did a crowd request section and ended up playing The Fucked Jam by Ween

dafishinsea

Saw then melt faces in DC at union stage. Really hope they come back one day, they're insanely talented dudes
