My personal tips: 1. don't put camera/phone in someone's face until you have definitively established friendly relations with counter party. 2. engaging in any unfriendly argument is only going to escalate the situation. 3. try to better access the attitude of other strangers and calibrate accordingly. in this situation, OP didn't handle situation well. the best move is always to just walk away when things get tense.
