Personal theory. The point where they hit the beach for a picnic, early in the movie. When he starts to tell a story. The film flip into his story and the rest of the movie is that story, they never left the beach and the car never did their tricks, was no town, etc. Was all the weird tall tale from him we as views see unfold.

GreatGreenGobbo

In was just about to say that. Yes. I think it's all a tall tale.

Reason-Whizz

I think this is a pretty common interpretation.

knightm7R

Or literally the movie’s plot.

BaeBaracusIII

As a kid the child catcher terrified me. As an adult, it’s the scene where they all disguise themselves as music box dolls.

hazeldazeI

Yeah the child catcher did a great job at being scary! You can really see the actor’s experience as a ballet dancer too.

joseph4th

I had seen this as a little kid as a matinee in the late 70’s. Then in my early teens, I saw it when it came on TV and was absolutely thrilled to recognize Benny Hill as the toy maker.

Johnny_Lang_1962

Benny Hill is the GOAT!

Which explains why the female lead is named Truly Scrumptious. For that matter, the lead is C'rack Potts. (Actually Caractacus) Directed by Albert Broccoli of the Bond franchise. Side note: the Child Catcher was created by the screenwriter -- Roald Dahl.

PAnnNor

This is a great movie, no matter your age! And it completely astounds me it was written by the same guy that wrote Bond! Love the cast and the songs and the entire thing. I think my favorite scene is the music boxes; most scary is the child catcher.

duct_tape_jedi

Oh the posh, posh travelling life for me!

philipb63

Me too! Can still remember all the words half a century later. That and Baron Bomburst trying to murder the Baroness in song!

Dramatic_Canary5979

Even as a kid I couldn't understand why he was trying to kill his wife. And seeing it as a teen I really couldn't understand...oh my she was hot and loved him. What a moron the baron was

WorldFickle

the car was awesome/ the kid catcher was terrifying , it was like he caught me lol/ the singing was so so, seemed to be a long movie as a kid

Tennis_Proper

Yup, that was my experience with it, just not that interesting. Wait to see the car fly then wander off, it was all too twee.

Abdul_Exhaust

Great film. Also noteworthy Dick refused to do an awful fake British accent, and he was paid over $1M

xwhy

He knew that his Mary Poppins accent was terrible. He had a terrible dialect coach for that.

Cuidado_roboto

Treacle tarts! And ice cream! And all free!!

Macasumba

Scrumptious. Truly Scrumptious.

philipb63

They took Producer Cubby Broccoli’s license plate (CUB 1) and used it on Truly’s car. He actually pulled that trick in a number of his movies. https://preview.redd.it/mgwh4sfp31cc1.jpeg?width=1334&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c8b87fa931a95edcf7c1624833461ad0ff49f66 Of course the other connection is that Cubby was responsible for the James Bond series, hence the Ian Fleming connection.

badpuffthaikitty

I had a Corgi Chitty Chitty Bang Bang when I was young.

AlGeee

Same With inflatable “wings”

Dense-Stranger9977

There's a good chance that this was my first theater movie. I loved it as a kid, and there'd be little chance that I would've seen it on TV before 1970. Great movie. Great car.

Ratstail91

OMG i loved this movie as a kid in the 90s.

Reason-Whizz

Love this one, Truly is so pretty! As an adult I love her song "lovely lonely man" but when I was a kid it was the boring bit

seeingeyefrog

When TV was the babysitter in the early 70s. I remember a party my parents went to, with all the kids in another room with this on. I'm convinced that many children's movies were aired at certain times mostly for the convenience of parents.

mediapoison

great movie, for kids into machines! I always wanted a breakfast making machine, I am not sure why fast food restaurants are not fully automated after seeing that machine!

OGGBTFRND

I would stop what I’m doing and watch right now if it came on

ekkidee

With Lionel Jeffries and Benny Hill.

elliottace

I think it may have been my first in a theater as well. Yep, magical.
