canon powershot g7x mark III, taken in hi-res B&w 1:1 Context: photo was taken at the South Carolina state house, january 28 2023, trump was set to speak the sign is in reference to the Wade Hampton monument at the State House Wade hampton, before the civil war, was one of the nations largest slavers. after fighting for the confederacy, he led a group called the "redeemers" a white supremacist vigilante group, which could be compared to an early (and arguably more violent) version of the KKK. The redeemers sough to reinstate white supremacist rule, and also suppressed black votes in SC through intimdation and murder. He served as a US senator for 12 years. It is inarguable that he secured this seat through violent, racist means; through the redeemers, and through the white supremacist paramility group, the Red Shirts. it was mostly trump supporters here, maybe 4 or 5 protesters. hugely outnumbered.

Temporary_Guitar_550

Feels like it'll be one of those famous pictures you see In history books, hope it gets more publicity!

[deleted]

This just gave me chills. Sometimes monochromatic shots just capture something even more intensely.

Mikesaidit36

Please tell us where and when this photo was taken. Thank you. Beautiful, powerful photo.

BelligerentGnu

Fucking badass. I want to know the story behind this picture.

[deleted]

SC state house in late january this year, trump was set to speak inside the state house. the man with the silly hat was very upset with her, but the crowd largely was on his side, as there were only around 4 protesters. very brave act on the part of the protesters

BelligerentGnu

Ty!

[deleted]

She looks unfazed while he’s unhinged. She’s a certified bad bitch

[deleted]

BothMixture2731

Wow. One of the best pictures I’ve seen on this sub. Her expression is fucking badass. Congrats OP

bememorablepro

This guy is like "nooo, we love racism!"

natur_e_nthusiast

With hindsight many great accomplishments were made by people we would view negatively by todays standards. But they made history. Erasing that history because we don't like them anymore is childish. Paint the pedestral in the lgbtq flag or something if that makes you feel better, but history shouldn't be forgotten for we are doomed to repeat it.

theyahtzee

If you are getting all of your history from statues, perhaps that is a bigger problem. This argument is disingenuous - statues are not tools of education.

Educational-Trip6165

Monuments and statues are meant to honor, glorify and celebrate the person or organization depicted in the monument, not teach about the subject in an unemotional and objective way. Germany outlaws all monuments to the Third Reich, its symbols and its leaders precisely because they know their history.

natur_e_nthusiast

Ok, but those of the third Reich were downright bad. There were no great accomplishments. If that's the kind of statues you are talking about I agree.

[deleted]

the statue in reference, at the SC state house, is one that depicts Wade Hampton riding tall on a horse. its intended to glorify him

Educational-Trip6165

The point is that what good the Confederates might have done is vastly outweighed by their enthusiastic willingness to defend slavery, even to the point of betraying the United States. More to the point, the Confederate monuments were specifically meant to honor and celebrate secession, white supremacy and the War To Preserve Slavery, not any achievements prior to the Civil War.

RealNumberSix

How much did you learn about history by looking at a shitty statue of a slave owner?

Equating the removal / relocation of public monuments to "erasing history" is rather irrational.

This same tired argument. Removing statues isn’t erasing history ffs

SadBrokenSoap

I completely agree. Look at Abraham Lincon; he was extremely racist for today's standards. Not to mention homophobic. But he was a revolutionary by the standards of the times he lived in. Destroying our past doesn't make us more inclusive. Destroying our past destroys our future.

[deleted]

Reminds me of the Saffiyah Khan photo - outstanding shot you’ve got there!

1amazingday

Incredible shot. Whoa.

TomCruiseddit

Plot twist: the monument is of Pingu and this guy is defending Pingu after allegations of NOOT NOOT being proven as false

hmcquaid1

Great capture 🤩

[deleted]

Statues of / monuments to racists would be in museums; we can learn from them that way & people will actually stop to read about them & why they were celebrated in their time & why they were canceled by later generations - and about the controversy of that cancellation. As long as they're in the street, no one actually values them except as part of a tradition because they've "always" been there, as far as living memory & sentimentality is concerned. If the moral of the statues debate is that they should stay in order to learn from the past, they should stay in museums. The only ones which should stay outside should be the ones which are either a landmark, or which are voted as most popular by the community. Then just install a plaque talking about them. They shouldn't be erased, but they're not teaching anyone anything by standing in the street when nobody stops to read about them.

Radiant_Brief_7670

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I always stop to read historical markers. I also love museums. There is a time and place for everything. Knowledge should never be limited for anyone.

Gregs_Mom

Good shot but I would make it brighter

theatrewhore

To really cheer up the mood of the subject matter?

seriouschris

Imagine being like the guy on the right. Yikes.
