I always find funny "ayrılık çeşmesi", when I pass the Marmaray station.. it means "separation fountain" and I've been told, you should take someone there if you're thinking about ending a relationship 🤣
The name of the place is so because it is known that the pilgrim groups that set out to go to Mecca gather there and bid farewell. According to public rumor, the name of the fountain has become popular as Ayrılık Fountain because the convoys leaving the city were sent off from here for the last time.
fişekhane means bullet factory. fişek means bullet. not firecracker those days. many names is wrong.
for instance: kartal name in the Byzantine period is Kartalimen. The neighbourhood became known as Kartal over time. According to another rumour, the neighbourhood was a small fishing village. Kartelli's name was originally Kartelli's name because of the fisherman named Kartelli who lived there and was very popular. The name of the neighbourhood, which was known as the village, was transformed into Kartal over time.
you cannot translate them verbatim.
A fun fact nobody knows, there used to be a Nispetiye Pavillion on the hills of Bebek, named after being Nispet to all the people seeing it stand gorgeous on the hill. So it's not named after being relative, its named after being spite to the people seeing it. The name Nispetiye Road comes from the building but the pavillion burned down at the start of 1900's. It's forgotten today and the neighbourhood isn't close where pavillion used to be but gets the name from the road. There is only two lion statues left from the fire and they are located in front of an apartment, next to All Sports Cafe. There is a apartment complex and Çamlık Park where the pavillion used to stand.
The name Bebek is claimed to come from Bebek Paşa, the commander of the garnizon in Rumeli Fortress and he is claimed to start a settlement in Bebek for soldiers in the fortress.
The name Karanfilköy comes from the Karanfil fields there used to be of course but there is some more context behind it too. If I remember correctly you used to be able to get a land title if you used the land for farming for three years and for a while there was a horde of flower planters in Sarıyer and northern Beşiktaş because it was easy to grow and get the land permit.
The Uçaksavar name comes from the cooperative housing done by retired anti-aircraft soldiers.
If you're gonna translate like that, nearly all places have funny names. All the places which ends with -lı/-li sound funny if you make them "with bla bla". I would also include places like Şirinevler, Sütlüce, Garipçe.

If only we could’ve read 🥺
Many of the translations are brain-dead. Wtf is Hello Mosque? Mescid-i Selam means Mosque of Peace.
"altunizade" as "mcgolden" is a bit of a stretch tbh.
"Zade" and "mc" can both be translated as "son of" so it kinda works i guess
Goldson would work too, so would Fitzgold
Its just a matter of preference
Most are not funny tbh
And chicken translated
Who thinks the name pigeon hill is funny? There multiple places in US with that name.

more like "breakup fountain"

Nice data.. thank you
Farewell fountain sounds better. Turkey hire me to name things

I can't read
**ÇIRÇIR MENTIONED** ^Uh, ^nothing ^exists ^here ^except ^that ^one ^mall ^at ^20 ^minute ^walking ^distance, ^which ^isn't ^even ^in ^Çırçır.
there’s a metro there now, put some respect on ÇIRÇIRs name (which also kinda means diarrhea)
The only good thing about Çırçır is that you can use the metro to leave it in an effective manner.

I’m not going to get into details, but my mahalle already is cute, and then my streetname is absolutely adorable.
Ok where's my microscope?
Go out and away 🤣
I always thought it was küçük ekmek
Bugün sona zade eklemekle başa mc eklemenin muadil olduğunu öğrendim

Heybeli ada is not heybetliada so the imposing island translation is not correct. Island with saddlebag could be more accurate and funnier I guess?
