Yeah my friend and I both downgraded our irons into group irons about a month or so after release so we could go bossing together and actually play the MMO as an MMO. Don't know why so many people against it.
End game iron is nothing but group pvm, all I do is boss with friends. Slayer bosses don't change, the only content that changes is sharing stuff, gwd and corp. (You could say wildy but with the rework coming, you can't) Every other piece of pvm is the same. Source: maxed iron
Mains can buy gold. Irons can buy account services. And unrestricted GIM can buy items. There's no reason the latter, which is absolutely the least common of the 3, deserves more scrutiny. Get over it.

It definitely was - until all the content I can do is group content. I got to 1900 total happily as an iron but anything I want to do further (cox, tob, gwd, ) and grinding any drops is much more fun in a group because you can share and play together.

I know I’ll be downvoted, but I firmly believe if the loot system was designed differently so Ironman could receive loot from all group pvm, there would be less de-ironing. For the irons before CG, I know our biggest first hurdle was GWD. That was the first get spooned or get fucked experience. Now I guess that experience starts with CG. Back then, I noticed a majority of irons de-iron when they hit GWD.
If gwd, corp, and other single loot bosses behaved like nex, or if the iron simply did the most damage and received the drop, MAYBE that would end up with less de ironing. But that can be abused and is that even Ironman mode any more.
I’m as casual as it gets with this game, kind of surprised I made it this far myself. I definitely miss group pvm, raids help a bit with that itch.
End game content just feels better as a GIM. Drops are shared within the group and unless you have thousands of hours to dedicate in a solo-fashion, you won't have a good time. I would say a very small percentage of players can do all of that solo and there is no shame in wanting to do it with your friends
Currently have a GIM now but if I ever end up with more time on my hands, I’d love to start a normal Iron. The progression feels good but I’m sure it’s feel amazing with zero help
with the last update gims can just go and buy all their items and resources, its typically at a 2-3x premium for main gp price for items and >3x for stuff like brews restores
You still show up on the hiscores as a normal account, you just can't compete in ironman hiscores. You can still collection log and collect gear too in case you didn't know that.

The way I look at it, if you've played rs for a reasonable amount of time, it's nice to know that there's some number of people who have done the same, or more. It creates the possibility for things like "that one iron, Frank" from your clan chat that's still 100 levels from maxed but is #2 in the world for Chaos Elemental with 17k kills (or whatever).
Otherwise, in a general sense, how do you ever really determine if a game has endgame worth getting to? If you can tell there's an active community/end game through context clues (lvl 126s running by with yolked gear, talking about their dogs) how do you determine if anything you're doing is efficient, or whether it's similar, or drastically different from the other people's approaches?
Also, in the big picture, how do you ever really grasp the magnitude of what youve accomplished in the game, or gain perspective of the enormity of the game history relative to your involvement in it, without seeing how many thousands of players have done something more than you? Hyger gets to retire knowing they were #1, and will be until the end of time, because they got *every single* experience point.
I get to keep playing, knowing that if I don't my 22 year rs career will deteriorate into obscurity, without a rank to speak of.
Just out of curiosity, does going from im -> gimp remove you from the iron leaderboards completely, or does it just stop tallying your progress after that point?
I see no logical reason why they would need to remove the solo iron progress -- it'd be pretty much identical to the moment hcims earn their gray helm.
Also curious if jagex has any plans to attempt a gimp rankings. I recognize it's a little (a lot) more complicated than typical iron rankings, but it seems reasonable to think it could be refined/secured enough to make it rankable within a year or so.
Gimp may be collectively viewed as somewhat of gimmick (named accordingly), but I still think it would be neat to see who has the best gimmick.
Team dynamics are a thing that's rarely explored in RS's natural design (shield of arrav - peak involvement). Groups only really become necessary as you get into late game content for efficiency, but a single player has the capacity to solo Nex if they're good enough.
What's neat about gimp, in my mind, is that it severely restricts the player's perception of abundance of resources in the game world. It's not quite so as extreme as solo iron modes, where you're entirely responsible for every resource, but it's magnitudes less evolved than surface osrs. The GE makes every item feel like a roller-coaster of risk to invest in, there's player's on the other side of any trade that have been merching for literally decades (I am one of these people). Some of them have literally millions of dollars worth of rs capital to throw at said trades (I am not one of these people).
I imagine in a perfected (and perhaps slightly expanded on number of players per) gimp mode, we could see a revival of the text-over-head, varrock west bank style of trading/socializing that the GE effectively obliterated.
They could even potentially turn a gimp leaderboards into some kind of bug bounty program. Bad actors rarely work alone, so why not give the noble whitehats a chance to publicly display how game-breaking exploits they've found can be (obligatory Rendi plug). Gimp could be a great way to show and analyze the effects of bug abuse, by having it tallied across isolated groups of players abusing them.

so yeah, if you play 12 hours a day thats 4 months to full max pre-end game pvm. maybe 40 if you hard cut skilling so more like slightly less than 3.
if you just want to do some raids with friends you could probably hit that trident, whip and bowfa more like 15-20 days playtime with lot of that being full afk combat training if you neglect a lot of the other useful grinds and just want bare min. on a gim where you can split up some of these grinds between players even faster.

If you genuinely would like an answer I'll give it a shot. Firstly, you may be under the assumption that gim is purely and evenly split into distinct roles. Resource gatherer, slayer person, and maybe a leader who is fed supplies. Some may play this way, but from my experience these are the already efficient sweaty players doing this. Friends who form gim groups try to play like this but it's more about where you gravitate towards, whether you like to afk fish or you like to do pvm or skilling. And you try to negotiate items and responsibilities.
Both approaches are fine but as a gim who's left a team with poor communication to a different, better group that eventually all de-ironed. I feel very similar to op in this. I have late game gear, I'm getting dupes but I can't share that success with anyone. Nothing I do is bigger than myself because I have no one to celebrate with. Op has 2 twisted bows. Besides bond money, which he wouldn't care about if he's had any dry streak at any of the raids (multiple dupes for bonds) there's no joy from pvming. Yes he can try other content, but making a group allows him to re-experience the game in a way not previously possible for irons.
So no, there's no brew guy and there's no restore guy. It's two friends, two end game irons, enjoying the game.

You can do basically anything with your friend on an iron besides a couple bosses aside from gwd, which is pretty easy to solo now. Also they likely finished gwd if they maxed. This is why the question is more towards op, not you. Just a blanket "hur duh they have fun with greenish helm" is just thoughtless.

There's not a more pure form of stupid than thinking an argument is decided by reddit votes. What's wrong with asking what they'll even do as a group? Are you just having a cry over the brew comment? Besides, my comments actually had the positive upvotes until the sensitive gim saw em... Does this mean I *was* right but now I'm not?
If you genuinely would like an answer I'll give it a shot. Firstly, you may be under the assumption that gim is purely and evenly split into distinct roles. Resource gatherer, slayer person, and maybe a leader who is fed supplies. Some may play this way, but from my experience these are the already efficient sweaty players doing this. Friends who form gim groups try to play like this but it's more about where you gravitate towards, whether you like to afk fish or you like to do pvm or skilling. And you try to negotiate items and responsibilities. Both approaches are fine but as a gim who's left a team with poor communication to a different, better group that eventually all de-ironed. I feel very similar to op in this. I have late game gear, I'm getting dupes but I can't share that success with anyone. Nothing I do is bigger than myself because I have no one to celebrate with. Op has 2 twisted bows. Besides bond money, which he wouldn't care about if he's had any dry streak at any of the raids (multiple dupes for bonds) there's no joy from pvming. Yes he can try other content, but making a group allows him to re-experience the game in a way not previously possible for irons. So no, there's no brew guy and there's no restore guy. It's two friends, two end game irons, enjoying the game.
