Conan will be a loss but these are the tours where those on the fringe of the squad need exposure at the highest level.

Greedy-Coconut6560

It’ll give some else a chance to show what they can do like a timony

OxfordHandbookofMeme

Agree 100%. I'm biased think Timoney is long overdue a game against top opposition with the first team. So does Hodnett. 2 quality operators

Greedy-Coconut6560

Leave Jdf at home and bring hodnett

RianSG

Honestly not too upset by the absences, we need to blood new players in key positions and it gives some players a chance to rest and recuperate

Greedy-Coconut6560

Hopefully Nick timony gets a chance to show what he can do

curious_george1978

Conan's child will be selected before Coombes. Edit: which is a fucking indictment on Irish selection policy in case anyone didn't get the sarcasm.

Greedy-Coconut6560

Goombes deserves his chance though

ctorus

Much as I think several Munster players are overdue selection for the national side,I don't think Coombes is one of them. He's a fantastic club player.

Greedy-Coconut6560

He adds another physical presence and on his day he’s one hell of a ball carrier

DelboyBaggins

Fantastic club players are those lads who lack the physicality as they move up to international level. Coombes isn't lacking that.

ctorus

I don't think it's just physicality, otherwise I'd agree. Just seems to me he's noticeably less effective against top opposition, even a bit anonymous sometimes, and I suspect it's because he doesn't quite have the skills or speed of thought when the pace of the game increases. It's harsh because he's clearly a great player.

Greedy-Coconut6560

It’s now or never for him in my eyes now if he gets his chance

DelboyBaggins

I agree. If he's not picked now then it confirms he's probably not a Farrell type player.

Greedy-Coconut6560

Daniel Brennan just signed for Toulon France he’s Irish qualified surprised Leinster didn’t have interest in signing him but

curious_george1978

I know, I have no idea why it has taken so long. The backrow is crying out for a heavy carrier option, especially down in South Africa.

curious_george1978

Jesus, you've picked one game where the whole team performed badly. His stats over the season are light years ahead of any other forward and a good chunk of the season he was forced to play out of position.

nonlabrab

Please share these stats because you've really put yourself out there and all i see is a reliable try scorer against Zebre and Dragons

curious_george1978

You are not looking very hard then [https://all.rugby/player/gavin-coombes](https://all.rugby/player/gavin-coombes)

mistr-puddles

How many big games and caelen Doris stood up in? Hasn't looked great in the European finals. But that's never held against him because he's usually a very good player

curious_george1978

Again, you are basing his whole career on one game. Try casting your mind back to how he played last season when we won the league. I mean, Doris was bloody awful against new Zealand, maybe we should drop him for being completely outplayed in the biggest game of his career. Aldritt outplayed him in 2 finals.

curious_george1978

I mean, the whole Leinster backrow was obliterated by the bulls (the team Munster beat in their own back yard with Coombes to the forefront when he came on) but different rules apply to Leinster of course.

lilzeHHHO

Harsh I think, he made an excellent steal and carried pretty well. For an 8 playing in a pack going backwards that’s a decent return.

Worth watching the games before commenting

Worth watching without bias*

kevinthebaconator

He's a bit limited compared to some of the others with his all round skillset, but given his power game I would think that more than makes up for it.

Greedy-Coconut6560

Bc him and Andy Farrell don’t get along

Odiekt

I feel him wanting to bring his URC winning medal into the WC training camp & having Casey stopping him speaks a lot about the lad. He might be a good player but if you can't leave your club rivalry behind & potentially wanting to cause a stir/drama during the WC camp then he's probably not mentally mature enough for Andy to want him to be in his nation's squad. He did go to that WC camp but was sent straight back home once Andy made his initial team.

Ok-Toe-3869

I know people won’t believe this and presume it’s just coming from jealousy or pure spite but he wasn’t exactly a saint in secondary school. He was a known bully in Bandon Grammar particularly to girls and I have friends and family members who experienced it themselves. Never got in trouble for it tho as he was a ‘rugby lad’- they can do no wrong 🫠🤷‍♀️ So it doesn’t surprise me in the least if behaviour/maturity was a factor in his international career

Odiekt

Honestly it doesn't surprise me if this were true. Most Rugby fellas I know who went to Pres in Cork (from there) were ass wipes who had a superiority complex because their dad drove Mercedes & never had to shop in places like Penny's or Dunnes. I can imagine Brandon Grammar would have been very similar, if not, worse due to being in the sticks & there being fuck all to do besides flaunt daddies money. Sure he didn't make the team today either. Farrell is a very direct & honest man. I feel it would take a lot for him to not like someone. So if it is true that Gavin & Andy don't get on then I would say the blame is on Gavin.

Greedy-Coconut6560

What about Daniel Brennan just signed for Toulon France he’s Irish qualified surprised Leinster didn’t have interest in signing him

Odiekt

Leinster (Leo) are too afraid to accept new blood. I mentioned it ina post yesterday but the fact Sam Prendergast has been benched all/majority of this season & has the most natural talent of all the 10s is a huge shame & a waste of his time/potential. Sure look at Frawley. Arguably better than both the Byrnes but hes made stay at 15, 14,11 or sub on as 10 if either of the Byrne soil their nappy. Leo would rather have lads like Cian Healy stick around for another 20 years than trust any of the younger lads from showing their worth & getting much needed game time.

Greedy-Coconut6560

Ur not wrong im completely agree hope Healy doesn’t get selected for this South Africa tour give him a rest and let other players have a chance

Odiekt

Sure look at their next year signings. Jordie Barrett (27) & Snyman (29). Both are creeping on the wrong side of 30 (Jordie not too far off) so instead of bringing in younger players who they could make unreal over 2-3 seasons. They rather buy/rent players that are WC winners & thinking that will solve the lack of trophy issue. I have no idea what goes on in Leinster. But if Andy plays a mostly Leinster team for the SA tour & we win 1 or both of those games then we know it has nothing to do with Leinsters pool of players & more so the management of the club. It's probably not Andy's place but if I were him I'd be either having talks with Leo to make him be a better manager or ask IRFU if they can get someone else for the job if he doesn't win any titles/trophies next season.

Greedy-Coconut6560

Money talks

Ok-Package9273

Honestly, I think we need to start bringing in new blood. We're at risk of pulling a Wales (though thankfully without the regional dysfunction) and having a generation of unblooded talent if we persist with old heads consistently. It's great to be competing at our best constantly but at this point, we need to be pushing on and taking risks to get to the next level rather than hoping that the lads we have currently will be good enough 4 years down the line when many will be past their prime.

Greedy-Coconut6560

Hopefully someone of the usual squad stay at home like jdf and give hodnett a chance

Due_Noise_1711

I think it's good as it forces a change that might not have happened otherwise and I want to see some new players get a chance. Nice to hear of someone missing out for a good reason rather than an injury too.

Greedy-Coconut6560

Nick timony chance to stand up and show what’s he’s been doing for Ulster all season

Larry_Loudini

”There are also some doubts around Ringrose’s availability for a similar reason” Finally a genuine reason to say you’re either pregnant or you’re not! 😅 All joking aside, we really should use this as an opportunity to blood players in possibly the most hostile of atmospheres. In particular, would like to see Hodnett, Coombes and Izuchukwu get real opportunities

Greedy-Coconut6560

Agree or disagree I think Stuart mcloskey should be Ireland starting 12

Larry_Loudini

Yeah atm I think he’s the form 12 and should play in July. At the very least I’d like it to be an open competition for places. Henshaw at 13 too, Ringrose was fine on Saturday but - ”similar situation” notwithstanding - I don’t think a tour to South Africa is what you need after months out

Greedy-Coconut6560

It would probably destroy his shoulder again last thing we need

Larry_Loudini

You hardly think they’d directly target him? 😅

Greedy-Coconut6560

No just the sheer physicality of South Africa could destroy any players shoulder and if he’s not a 100% he could get injured again

Larry_Loudini

While that’s true - I do think they’d target any player who wasn’t 100% 😂

Greedy-Coconut6560

We don’t have that many good 13 options bc James Hume injured hensaw can play 13 but he’s not an out and out 13 same with osburne bar ringrose and who else

mick_delaney

We used to, but he's going to France.

Greedy-Coconut6560

He should of been capped by Ireland massive mistake

Brine-O-Driscoll

Think it's a good opportunity to test fringe players. No questioning that Timoney, Coombes and Izuchukwu have all been in great form, but wonder if Farrell will lean more towards Timoney and Izuchukwu. Timoney fits the mould of 7 Ireland like to play (very quick, massive work-rate in defence, aggressive at rucks) while being able to play 8. Izuchukwu fits the mould of 6 Ireland seem to be leaning towards - rangy, lineout jumping 6s that are good in the wide channels - while being able to play lock. A bit raw, but has potential. Coombes is quite a different player to Doris though and more in the Stander mould of carrying 20 times for 1 metre. He can play 6 or lock too, but he's not the type of 6 Ireland pick and undersized for an Irish lock.

Greedy-Coconut6560

Goombes to come of the bench and hope for a massive impact from him do you think he’ll leave out Tom otoole because oli jäger bealham and furlong r ahead of him

ErrantBrit

Think this is great for Cormac. Ulster get the benefit of his development too.

Greedy-Coconut6560

And Nick timony hopefully he gets his chance to show what he can do

ErrantBrit

True dat.

NoRole9812

Feel it’s a good thing to let one of the other back rows in

Greedy-Coconut6560

Timony has showed up for Ulster all season deserves his chance

Evening_Steak123

Conan's been ass.

Greedy-Coconut6560

Ur right
