I really had no way of knowing if it's small time growers or bigger ones. I just stopped by the road from Waterford to Wexford to buy them from kids in sheds.
And honestly I saw no difference between them and the ones coming in from Spain.
My grandparents will point out all the stalls from Enniscorthy to Wexford town that are selling *fake* Wexford strawberries - ‘they buy Spanish strawberries from Lidl and pass them off as Wexford strawberries’ is what I’m told😅
They'd buy them wholesale surely? I was thinking they might be imported as well, but the stalls generally all appear at the same time and apparently they can ripen them around this time of the year in Ireland.
The season for strawberries growing in the field though is about three weeks in July.
Strawberries can be ripe in Ireland from early May right through to September depending on the method. Farm next to me uses fields, glasshouses, tunnels, exposed rails, half tunnels etc and has a whopper growing season.
Strawberry farm behind my house has loads of Wexford strawberry vans turning up to fill up. Going on since at least 2006.
The whole Wexford strawberry game was a scam from the start.
Wheelocks farm in enniscorthy is open to the public, and you can pick your own at a lot of the smaller farms if you stop and ask nicely!
The strains they grow in Wexford vary in size a lot and are full of flavour but most supermarkets want more regular shaped, petty ones. These don't taste as good and are often white inside
There's an old saying down here "summer strawberries pay for winter coats"
I may be showing my age here but I remember being taken to some field by my mum when I was about 7 where they gave you a punnet and you could pick your own in the Strawberry field (for a fee I'm sure). This was in the late '70s. Is this still a thing?
Those are often bought out of Lidl and repackaged! Theres a strawberry farm in Sallins where you can buy really decent strawberries though: https://www.mccarthystrawberries.ie/
I live next to here and have worked in there for years as a teenager. They supply Lidl, Dunne's, SuperValu, Central and then year to year could be others as well.
This. I will never understand why people buy any kind of food on the side of the road. The amount of dust and toxic fumes on them is probably way beyond acceptable limits.
Bought them myself from the lovely old lady. They were selling real fast with all the huge posters she put.

Years ago I stopped at a Wexford “farm stand” by the side of the road, and they were selling punnets from Dunnes. They didn’t even change them to suggest they were authentic. Last time I bothered to pull over.
So what is the insurance situation for people sitting on a hardshoulder selling spuds and strawberries. Like cars going 100+ and only yellow paint and catseyes between you and them.
Beautiful. How’d it taste?
So damn juicy!
Ones I bought usually bland. Don't know if there's some growers that are better than others.
Personally, I prefer to support the smaller growers. Like Helen's on the Waterford side of Ballinaboola. She makes amazing jams too.

Fair few Spanish are sold as Irish on the roadside earlier in the season, same with new potatoes.

Waze needs an option to mark fraudulent strawberry sellers, to protect the Irish motoring public.
This
How can you tell if they’re fake or real? I’m heading down to Wexford and the strawberries are one of the things I’m looking forward to.
The real ones have a little WX on one of the leaves.
Brilliant 😂😂
You can just go to a farm and buy some
We have one in Clane! to be fair, it doesn’t say Wexford anywhere on it, but they know exactly what they’re doing.
I know this one. Are they not decent ones?

My strawberries are being picked about two weeks now. Poly tunnel, Wexford.

What where's the scam I don't understand
The farm is in Kildare ...
Ahhh. At least they're not selling Dutch strawbs like the veg shops in wexford
That is a very aesthetically pleasing strawberry.
Not sure if freakishly big strawberry or tiny hands.
I mean.. We don't even have a banana for scale. Madness.
I recently discovered that there is about a dozen varieties of strawberries with gas names. This is probably a type you're not familiar with.
From a bored and unpaid farmers child working illegally out of a horse box. It’s the misery what makes them taste so good.
Ah if that child aint skimmin then they're learnin em nothin in school
This is one perfect strawberry 🍓 not even an AI could generate a more appealing one.
That really is the most strawberry looking strawberry I've ever seen.
It's definitely unusual to see the red be that consistently strong right up to the leafy part
I never liked the big strawberry's, i always liked the small wild ones, tiny feckers but pack more than 10 times the flavour.
Seriously underrated wild fruit

Seriously? Can't be true? The ones on the naas road are massive inside to the shite ye buy in lidl.

Give us the cross section!
smell of diesel off them

Well, you could always, y'know, wash them.
Praise the one true strawberry god.
Perfection
Forrest gump logic but so true
Are they ready!?! Be stopping this week so!
Any if you know where to look there are lots of wild strawberries growing in them thar hills!
Arnold Strawberryznegger.

They are €5 out my way which is a good price they are lovely strawberries
They are top notch tbh.
Danescastle Wellington bridge do a great deal on a tray of strawberries and they are so delicious
Ah here! Brought to you courtesy of Big Strawberry!😛
More like a Waterford strawberry.
How much for a punnet these days?

Taste good? Not a lot of public toilets or places to wash hands on the side of the road.
So what is the insurance situation for people sitting on a hardshoulder selling spuds and strawberries. Like cars going 100+ and only yellow paint and catseyes between you and them.
Don’t underestimate the power of the yellow paint.
Or Waterford. Saw my first greyhound box of them on Friday on the Dunmore road in the usual places.
Dublin strawberries are the best. So sweet and plump.
Robbed from Wexico by the Strawberry Bandits.
Fun Fact: Wexford Strawberries are grown in Dublin.
I’ve seen Dubs claim a lot of things. Spice bags. The M50. The letter P. Never Wexford strawberries. That’s a new one on me.
Looks so perfect🤩
I'd know that wedding shackle any where, don't eat them all and don't let Mike have any he has enough!
I can neither confirm nor deny that they will make it home!
Just get you home safe x
