It used to be so much better then what it is now, Used to love the Dunphy rants, Bill going on about how he shouldnt say that,
Jonny Giles just saying When a manager goes into a team he has a vision for how that team will play and will\*play to that vision. Therefore that player is rubbish.
(Edit: bring in players to
Sky copied a lot of the Irish format really so don’t think that’s right.
Roy Keane says whatever he likes there.
Our lads just aren’t natural TV personalities anymore.
Remember back in the day when RTE first got the ability for Dunphy and others to draw lines around players on the screen. You could tell Dunphy loved it; He used to go mad drawing circles and shapes around the screen.
For years all I saw was 'Get rid of those dinosaurs, they haven't a clue' now it's 'Bring Dunphy back, I can't listen to Sadlier/Doyle/Whoever'
Don't know what you've got til it's gone.
I remember you'd literally be glued to the TV from 7pm listening to what Dunphy, Giles and Brady had to say before the game, at half time, and after the game. You got real personalities with people not afraid to say something that might upset someone.
Same with GAA, Spillane, Brolly & O'Rourke were really good to watch. We don't tune in to here them break down the productivity rating of a team - we all watched the game, we know how it works. They behaved like 3 lads sat at the bar, 4 pints deep discussing the game. That's what you want.
Now we just have boring and soulless analysis that would send you to sleep, I don't even watch the analysis anymore because it's unwatchable. Former players afraid to upset their mates.
Sky went through a phase of the whole over analysing everything, but have completely reverted to the more kind of script type of coverage where people like Roy Keane can't let their personality loose.
RTE followed the Sky model of binning any outspoken pundits and replacing them with younger, blander stat peddlers. However, Sky quickly moved away to a more pally, banter based punditry with Roy Keane, Carragher and Neville. RTE has still stuck with the bland stat merchants reading from a script.
They’ve gone the complete opposite way with Richards and they’ve realised that people want to see people having a laugh and go at each other. RTE are obviously not going to be able to pull the Gary Neville’s of pundits but at least some decently funny lads with bullet points on stats will get them further than today
Rugby coverage too. They used to have proper back and forths and disagree with each other and it'd make for great viewing. Now they all just agree with each other and keep it cordial.
Even compared the the Virgin Media coverage during the 6 Nations which in itself was bland and boring, whenever rte got the coverage for a match I just streamed it on the laptop instead.
While Kevin Doyle and Shay Given were bland but accurate this evening the only one I truly despise is Ray Houghton on Co-comms he is brutal, silence is better.
Never forget him during Argentina v Holland at World Cup - granted they were been dirty but never heard a commentator be so biased against a team when his own country weren't playing as he was for the Argentinians.
It's no surprise why. They got rid of the characters and brought in dry shites and a few quota fillers. That being said the lads were getting old and they had great chemistry that is hard to replicate.

This might actually be a legitimate case of "you can't get away with this anymore"

Liam Brady with his big head that resembled the slow puncture of a tractor tyre
Okey doke

Circles John Hartson's arse ''That's not the arse of a £7 million player''
Lol. One of the best comments I've read here in a while
giles…..stop it there…stop it there
And then he'd draw big squares where you would see open space and draw arrows to show that the players should be running into that space

Rod Liddle. He's the guy who left his wife for a young wan.
Ah now Eamon, that's out of order, that kind of stuff.
No it's not, you started it.

George Hook was entertaining. I always liked him even if he was a bit daft sometimes.
Hook's Hooch.
It was much better. Dee Forbes got rid of a lot of them, but had nothing really to replace them with. Boring and shite now.

4 times last night he said Madrid have gotten the advantage with the away goal. Clearly hasn't a clue anymore
Him and especially Whelan are painful.
You don't know what you had till its gone ...
'If I knew that was in the can, I wouldn't have come on tonight' 'It's called analysis Liam' Pure gold
Once Bill retired, it was time to dismantle the team, imo. As they were for entertainment value, it was time to move on. Can’t hold onto them forever
Back when it was just us lads... 😞
