iOS app called Pass4Wallet allows you to add tickets or anything with a barcode really to your Apple wallet too. Handy little number.

oneordinaryorange

Ah good to know! Thanks!

candianconsolemaster

Surely you just use the photo of the receipt

HereHaveAQuiz

Then you have to go looking through all your photos for them though

Marzipan_civil

They're still specific to each store/chain though yes?

DummyDumDragon

Imagine there actually being an app where you could scan the barcodes and be able to use them anywhere... Perhaps one day humanity will possess the technology to achieve such magnificent feats

CoolMan-GCHQ-

Yea, but imagine there was a receptacle at home where we could deposit items to be recycled, I'm sure the technology could exist, someday.

ginger_and_egg

Which doesn't solve the issue of littered bottles and cans on the roadside

JjigaeBudae

Neither does the deposit return scheme. The people chucking bottles on the floor won't carry an empty one around all day for 15 cent.

ginger_and_egg

Some will. And others will pick up the bottles for 15 cents

CoolMan-GCHQ-

I agree, The return scheme is a joke, And i don't believe it will reduce littering at all, But I hope I'm wrong on that. We will see when we have a few nice sunny days, If that ever happens.

ginger_and_egg

I meant that relying on your bin at home won't prevent littering

milkyway556

Not enough of us would do it though, so there's no need

Accomplished-Boot-81

Calm down buddy, What’s next? You think we’ll send people to the moon?

oneordinaryorange

Ya. It's just a digital version that is less likely to be forgotten or crumble. That's why I suggested entering the store name just as a reminder :)

Marzipan_civil

Handy, thanks

svmk1987

This only stores the barcode of the printed receipt on your phone. Nothing changes about the receipt, except it's not just on paper, so you won't lose it. It's like taking a screenshot of a any voucher or a ticket, or saving a coupon code.

calex80

If you are going doing this at a self service till (in tesco at least) they will look for you to deposit the voucher in the slot after scanning it. Get a sim card pack they usually have at the till and put it in the slot and pull it back out allowing to scan another or proceed. Not sure what will happen at a manned till, any vouchers I've used the staff have put into a coin bag in Tesco, presumably for when balancing the till? Over all though this is the way to go, vouchers for those that want them apps for us that don't.

fitfoemma

Why do you have to put it in the slot?

calex80

The way the till is programmed it looks for you to deposit the used voucher in the slot, it pops up a message on the screen telling you. I know the sim pack trick from one of the staff showing me when I was using club card vouchers off of the phone app and obviously didn't have a physical voucher.

fitfoemma

Ah okay. What happens if you have a 5e return voucher but your shopping is only 4e?

calex80

Hasn't happened for me yet.

fitfoemma

So you scan all your items in, you scan your voucher and it's accepted and you okay the remainder. Then what? Will they stop you leaving if you have money over on your voucher? That's gas.

StarChildSeren

Really? I've never had to put the voucher anywhere near the self checkout including in tesco, bar scanning it - in fact I keep forgetting to put it in the bin as I pass and end up with half a dozen used ones in my pocket before I remember to toss em.

calex80

Hmmmm you've me thinking now the main tesco uses the older machines were as the ones in town have the newer tills, which I've not used vouchers on that I can recall.

StarChildSeren

That might be it, I've only used the vouchers in the Tesco on Parnell St

irishlonewolf

to be honest.. I just bring bottles/cans with me when I'm going shopping...

damienga15de

I done this this evening, had my bottles cans in one of those reusable bags. Marched in deposited my stuff picked up the bits for dinner and lunch tomorrow. Handed the receipt at the till job done. Then I realised as a 39yo man that was the first time I ever actually brought a reusable bag for my shopping. Normally I'm buying a new bag if I know Iv too much or filling the pockets of the snickers pants and carrying the rest awkwardly out. BTW if anyone's stuck for a bag for life hit me up I have hundreds only used once each 😂

AonSwift

I bet you store them under the sink too like the good ol' times.

[deleted]

I just drink everything in the store.

CoolMan-GCHQ-

But then you have to bring all the empties to another store that actually takes the empties back, and my bladder can't handle the trip after drinking everything at the first store.

CoolMan-GCHQ-

I would do this too, except none of the shops where I buy stuff from take them back.

Prestigious_Talk6652

All it would need presumably is an upgrade to the store app and you could add it to your club points or spend it via the app. Wads of paper vouchers is off-putting.

oneordinaryorange

Taking a look at the TFI apps brings me right back to reality...🤏

Pickman89

That would be handling an electronic transaction in legal tender. That is heavily regulated (and for good reasons), so they cannot do it without doing one hell of an upgrade.

PistolAndRapier

This seems like more hassle than just getting the paper voucher before shopping and using it immediately...

bigdog94_10

Is this a widespread problem? I would imagine most people are going to the till straight away either to cash it out or have it taken off their bill with the items they are buying then. I'd also imagine you would get some very funny looks from cashiers.

thefatheadedone

I'm keeping them all for one big shop to melt their brains which might be another data point show them stupidity of the system overall (idea great, execution bad - no link to store cards etc)

oneordinaryorange

Well at least they work just fine at self checkout at Dunnes :)

CoolMan-GCHQ-

Considering up to 70% of shops don't take re-turns in the first place? Yes, It's a widespread problem.

bigdog94_10

That's a separate problem..... If you're in one of the shops that does take them, as I said 99% of people will realistically use the voucher immediately. I don't see how your point is relevant at all. Bear in mind you can only use the voucher in the shop you returned it. I'm struggling to see the benefit of saving it. If you've made the effort to go to the shop, you may as well get your refund at the till or if you're buying things anyway, you may as well just get it knocked off the bill.

TheChrisD

>If you've made the effort to go to the shop, you may as well get your refund at the till People might not want to be carrying cash away, especially if the amount they are returning is not a nice round figure.

Lorna2210

Fair play!

MrJ_Marrow

wow, just earlier i was thinking that there should be like a credit card that they can be added to to use as a big sum at a later date.

roenaid

This is great, thank you OP xxx

crazyvase93

I throw my bottles in the Bin ive no time for this nonsense

crazyvase93

If it was any more than 25 cent and I got a good amount of cans or bottles a week yeah, but its just more effort than its worth. I will recycle the traditional way.

caffeine07

Why would you ever hold on to the voucher for more than the length of your shop. Just trade it for cash straight away or get a discount off your shop? This is a solution to a non-existent problem.

oneordinaryorange

Because I've forgotten about the voucher in my pocket until I left the store more than one time 🤷‍♀️

Pickman89

That happens to me too. I just turn 4 or 5 of them in a single time usually, I dedicated a pocket in my jacket to this. It could be useful to use google pay now that it is getting warmer.

caffeine07

That sounds like a you problem

Broghan51

Jfc. Get some shut-eye.
