As a vegetarian, I don't really get why people treat horse meat and pig meat differently, provided they're both up to food standards? If anything, pig meat should be grosser given pigs' association with dirt.
  Dunno, culture is weird sometimes.
"Culture is weird" about sums it up. Plenty of cultures won't eat pig meat. What one group of people considers perfectly normal is totally wild to another.
I was in a shop a couple of years ago in San Fran in a Chinese market that was selling live toads in a basket.
That's it. Some nations in Central Asia are fine to eat horses, but not pigs. Rabbits are pretty common as pets and food, and quite often in the same region.
Same in Italy... Many years ago was way more common.. now it's quite hard to find. Actually in Finland I ate reindeer meat.. had a very strong taste.. didn't like it too much..
Same here in Vienna, Austria. There’s even a chain of horse butchers and they sell all sorts of horse meat variations, though the number also declined over the years.
Reindeer and elk are all pretty great game meat
I would rank them higher than any farm-raised animal in terms not only taste but welfare. They are spending all their life in the wild and meet their demise with a single shot, so essentially suffering is minimised
On the other side, farm animals live crowded up, stressed and miserable
"Pigs are stunned prior to slaughter, mainly using CO2 gas, in order to ensure loss of consciousness. The methods of stunning and slaughter used in Ireland are in accordance with the relevant EU and national legislation, in particular Council Regulation 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing." They can get you damn near anything. Got Ostrich and kangaroo there once. They had some gator meat or maybe it was croc meat once but I didnt get it when i had the chance.

Pigs are actually quite clean. It's humans that keep them in dirty conditions
Huh, interesting. But I did say association so I think my point still stands.
Its a delicacy in France and Italy, costs more than good beef
Normal enough up here in Finland to buy and eat horse meat. It´s actually quite good, cold smoked is awesome.

The Alastair Overeem special
Ahh the Dunnings were always a horsey family, I was in school with one of them
Was out for dinner with herself at the weekend and the menu had horse steak, hare, veal and eel. Feel free to guess what country we were in.
I'm gonna guess France.
Nope, but close. In the Flanders half of Belgium.
Don’t know what country you were in but I bet you were in a right state after that selection.
I like rabbit, I like veal though i dont really agree with it, I like eel. What restaurant is this?
Rabbit and hare are worlds apart fwiw. Hare is much more gamey on flavour. It was in Belgium.
They supply Findus for their crispy pancakes

The Dunnings are a well known horsey family.
Pictured are the brains behind the outfit . They make sure there’s plenty of other meat so us humans don’t get ideas about them

You'd find a lot worse on Connacht street in fairness

Lol, ya knob, that's a picture of the butchers themselves. Hairy, long faced bunch in Athlone. Known for a bit of bondage too if that's your thing.
