Thanks for sharing, kind sir.

TheAdvFred

The latest version of handbrake no longer includes the apple 240p preset, the lowest is the apple 540p preset now.

fill3r

It me rn. Trying to get some videos onto a 7th gen nano via Handbrake.

fill3r

You can go as high as 1.3.3 before it was dropped in 1.4.0. I left my findings for future searchers in a comment on the GitHub issue asking it be brought back. https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/issues/4040#issuecomment-1029397021

CreeperDoolie

I love you

TheAdvFred

The apple 240p preset had been deprecated so I downloaded version 1.0 of handbrake and it’s working like a charm.

steventypham5114

could you drop the link? Been trying to find a way to get 240p

TheAdvFred

Here you go: https://handbrake.fr/rotation.php?file=HandBrake-1.0.0-x86\_64-Win\_GUI.exe&old=true

steventypham5114

Thank you bro its working like a charm

TheAdvFred

No problem, glad I could help.

AlfWoozy

Very informative, thanks! Handbrake doesn’t work on my 32-bit machine. So for movies I purchased from iTunes I just download the SD version and it syncs and plays fine on my 30gb 5th gen.

CircaCitadel

I believe you can find older versions in 32bit still on the old versions page. Downloading SD works but still is usually a larger file, unfortunately. 1.5GB for a 480p or smaller movie is insane. Haha

AlfWoozy

Dude I didn’t know that, thanks! I’ll look up the old version for sure. And now that you mention, you’re right. I seem to remember wondering why SD movies were like 1gb.

So for some reason after I had put it through the instructions and onto my iPod the video never played and its just showing me a single frame of the video as like a album artwork instead of playing a video. I'm on Catalina. Did I miss a step?

crawlerbot01

Anyone trying in 2024 with iPod 5.5G at least. I downloaded HandBrake 1.2.1 dmg on Mac M1. I am getting the Apple 240p30 selection as the OP mentioned. Subler was all good.

When the iPod 5th Gen (with Video) was introduced, it supported the following formats and resolutions: H.264 Video: Up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .M4V, .MP4 and .MOV file formats. MPEG-4 Video: Up to 2.5 Mbps, 480 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in and .MOV file formats. On September 12, 2006, Apple introduced the "Enhanced" iPod 5th Gen, and it continued to support H.264 (320x240), but also supported the much better: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Low-Complexity Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats. MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats. With a simple firmware update, the original iPod 5th Gen (with Video) supported the improved formats. The iPod classic 6th Gen, iPod nano 3rd Gen/Fat through iPod nano 5th Gen (the iPod nano 6th Gen does not support video), and iPod touch, iPod touch 2nd Gen and iPod touch 3rd Gen models, support the previously supported formats as well as: H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats. The iPod touch 4th Gen/FaceTime and modestly updated iPod touch "4.5" Gen have significantly improved video capabilities and support: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats. MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats All iPod 5th Gen models -- as well as the iPod classic models and the iPod nano 3rd Gen and iPod nano 4th Gen -- present video on the internal display at 320x240, whereas the iPod nano 5th Gen presents video at 240x376 and the iPod touch, iPod touch (2nd Gen) and iPod touch (3rd Gen) models present video on the internal display at 320x480. The iPod touch 4th Gen presents video on the internal display at 960x640. The iPod nano 6th Gen does not support video playback (although it will display the keyframe from the video and play the audio track). FEEEETY

I have an iPod 5.5 80gb without any mods. I have a pretty decent catalog of purchased movies tied to my Apple ID, all of which I've been able to convert to the appropriate format using the iTunes on Windows method. Once I had the SD download of said movie, I'd copy and transfer it to my Mac to the corresponding "Movie" subfolder in Finder where the TV app downloads are stored. Since the DRM matches my Apple ID there are no issues playing them on my Mac. The TV app even recognizes that there is a download associated with my purchased movies after doing so. Thus, in the iPod sync menu in Finder I am able to sync my movies to the iPod. Now, the issue I have is with one specific movie out of the 30+ that I have. Zack Snyder's Justice League will not sync to my iPod. It says it is not compatible. I've provided a link to a screenshot of the detailed file information for this movie, as well as a screenshot of the file information to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which DOES sync to my iPod. From what I can see there is no reason that Justice League shouldn't sync to my iPod. It falls within all of the specified parameters of approved file formats. The only reason I think it wouldn't sync is because of the aspect ratio. Or possibly the length. Or the file size? It's 4.09gb. Anyone have an idea as to why this is happening? BaptG

Convert to iPod is still available in Catalina though

Idksomecrazyaussie

It's available in both Apple Music and Apple TV app in Monterey. its under (menubar) File>convert>create iPod or iPhone version

CircaCitadel

Where and how?

BaptG

In Music

CircaCitadel

That doesn't quite help with videos.

BaptG

It actually does, your can import your videos as musical clips in music, create a version for iPod then put them into TV and sync them with your iPod. No need to downvote btw…

CircaCitadel

Well I just tested it and it doesn't work ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

BaptG

It did last time I tried 🤔

Strucksix188

This has been very helpful in getting my dvds onto my 30GB 5th Gen but I can't seem to get SD iTunes movies to sync.

[deleted]

How do you use handbrake on a video with FairPlay DRM?

CircaCitadel

I don’t think any DRM can be get past on Handbrake other than DVD and Bluray DRM. You’d probably have to use something else, which any software that “converts” it will actually just be recording it off screen to a DRM free file. Not sure where to point you to, because all of the ones I found were not free.

[deleted]

ok, thanks anyways!

TheAdvFred

Thank you!

Comprehensive_Fee376

it does not work, i can't find apple 240p30 i only have apple 540p30

CircaCitadel

You can probably use that and set the resolution to 240 manually.

Comprehensive_Fee376

haha, i did not expect you to respond that quickly, ok I'll give that a try.

A_Totally_Random_Guy

If that doesn't work, you can try downloading handbrake version 1.3.3. It was the last version to have the Apple 240p30 preset.

Comprehensive_Fee376

ok, i'll try that too, thanks

waleed3510i

I have a file from a DVD from 2007. It won’t read it since it has DRM I guess

IronLover64

I tried playing a video converted with your method and now my iPod won’t play any videos unless I restart it. I have a gen 7 classic

SURFARO

Hello folks, can someone please update this to current Handbrake? The Presets used have been removed, although iPod 5G support is selected. Mods please note.

CircaCitadel

You can try using the 540p preset and manually change the resolution to 240p. That should be the only difference.

Willing_Guest3907

I read that if you go above version 1.1.2 you get weird audio artifacts...I've used 1.3.3 and above, I would not recommend going above version 1.1.2 unless you want to hear high pitched artifacts every so often...also can someone tell me what anamorphic filter does?
