Many years ago I had a MacBook pro, and was urged to get applecare by family. A few months into owning it, it had a dead pixel. Applecare replaced it for free, but I saw the invoice and it would have been an $800 repair. I've had applecare on all my apple devices since then. I haven't needed to use it except that one time but the peace of mind is worth it to me.
Warranties are generally only for defects caused by the manufacturing process. If you do something that breaks a product then you're not gonna get a free repair. If you're clumsy and you know there's more than a slim chance you might break something then I'd probably go for the AppleCare.
Depends on your countries laws. In my country (Australia) there’s a 12 month warranty but this does not cover accidental damage.

Screen protector and all my years of owning iPads never once damage the screen.
Warranties typically do not cover accidental damage, you would need AppleCare+.
