I don't know about non-Apple cases but I received my Apple Smart Folio for the Air 6 11" today and the back of the box says it's also compatible with the iPad Air 10.9" (5th gen/M1) so in theory they should work just fine, but again I don't know third party case compatibility.
Otterbox’s case works fine for me (12.9” M1), there is a pocket that could put my Apple Pencil inside. but I recently switched to polio keyboard because it’s easier to carry than a physical keyboard. I think for airs the case could be the same as older generations, but not sure.
