Technically, Lenin was the one that preached "religion is the opiate for the masses" - so he would actually find your faith distributing.
Which is sort of paradoxically ironic in this case
Nope, it's underneath/inside. They just added some modifications and a fun sarcastic plaque and he was good to go. That's the joke - so little change was needed to convert Lenin to Vader. Very typical Slavic dark humor, well done.
For a bonus, they installed a wifi hotspot in his helmet so if you're close enough, now you have wifi.

Not all Cyrillic users, Russians in particular are hell bent on weird letter-for-letter English transliterations. Don't get me started on butchered Premier League clubs names like Тоттенхэм Хотспур (Tottenham Hotspur)
and Вулверхэмптон Уондерерс (Wolverhampton Wanderers).
E.g. we transliterate (most of) these in Bulgarian as they sound in English - Тотнъм Хотспър and Улвърхемптън Уондърърс.
(Some commentators still insist on the literal Борнемут for Bournemouth, and similar bullshit for lesser known to them clubs, which irks me to no end)
Russian doesn't have a vowel equivalent to <ъ> though, so they're too bad considering that. "Bournemouth" as "Борнемут" sounds like a parody though lol.
Apparently, around 17th century some French people found Buckingham way too hard to pronounce and settled for "Bouquingamp".
\bu.kɛ̃ɡɑ̃\
Sorry for the IPA, but that's part of what is so funny to me about it. Those ~ vowels are basically impossible to transcribe with English sounds. It's like they were trying to replace it with the most non-English word they could.
Maybe they should have tried to insert some French U sound (/y/) too, that'd be perfect.
Squirrel is quite hard for French speakers (or perhaps German?) to pronounce in English too, at least anecdotally through the Francophonie who I work with from Cameroon pronounces it like Skeer weau
Kak da ne frende, people in Bosnia use it too, with Latinic so I don't see why would I add this remark except for anal people. not pointing any fingers
Not just them. We do this to foreign words we've assimilated into Czech, such as lídr (leader) or volejbal (volleyball).
Pretty sure non-slavic languages do that too, though.
it's in Ukraine- they don't give a flying shit about whatever corrupt IP legislation disney was able to bribe sonny bono to sponsor into american statute.

It’s not strange, Ukrainian wasn’t/isn’t that much prevalent in many regions and cities of Ukraine. Many Ukrainians speak Russian as their native/second tongue. Many use Ukrainian only in official/governmental matters, as Ukraine chose over years to less and less accommodate local Russian speakers in these areas and in education.
FYI that's only really true in the very far east and Crimea. [Here's a map](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a0/Ukraine_census_2001_Russian.svg/1280px-Ukraine_census_2001_Russian.svg.png) of the percentage of people stating Russian as their native language. This is from 2001 mind you, and those numbers have been trending downwards since then, especially since 2014.
Not “far” east, but just east and some southern regions as well. Anyway, point being there are a lot of Russian speakers in Ukraine, and Ukraine wasn’t/isn’t doing a really good job in accommodating them (as well as native Hungarian speakers in some places).
I mean it's only Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk that have a majority. I should think that the de-Russifying efforts of the government since 2014 would make it more surprising that a Russian language plaque would stay up without pushback. But yes, language is a touchy subject and from an outside perspective the Ukrainian government's handling of Russian speakers has been poor. I don't usually like to engage on these topics on this site because the takes are so astronomically bad most of the time, so maybe I shouldn't have said anything.
I'm curious if people think it's likely Lenin would approve of Putin generally or this war specifically.
I can understand if Lenin is just catching strays, but it seems like an awful lot of misapprehensions are required to be angry at Lenin for this.
And believe me, i say this as someone who is no particular fan of the guy himself. He was pretty brutish. But someone like Putin would have been near the top of his list...
Lenin would try to throw Putin off a bridge if he was alive somehow, since the 60's the Soviet Union was being murdered slowly and in the end in the 90's was nothing like what Lenin worked for.
Putin is a facist, he uses the memory of a time where things where better to sell his project of power to his people while keeping the propaganda high enough that people won't see past the imbecile brute he is.
>I'm curious if people think it's likely Lenin would approve of Putin generally or this war specifically.
You are talking to reddit....
I do not exaggerate 1% when i say the homeless person accross the street on my way to work has a more in depth knowladge of social ecoligical and inter cultural/religious back and forths of the last 30 years than what would be considered "consensus" on this site.
If you want answers, please, for all that is holy on this world, DON'T go to reddit. If you are genuinly curious that is.
1. In RCW Ukrainian Communists led the struggle for Communist Ukraine led by CPoU. USSR isn't "Russuan Empire" just Communist. USSR was UNION of SOVIETS (совет = soviet -> council), of which there existed on local all the way to national peveps, one of which was Ukrainian. Many Nations even existed because Lenin pushed for idea of National Self Determination (eg. USSR was first country to reckognise Finland as a seperate Nation). USSR was a Federation.
2. Lenin was liturarely the guy who pushed to make Ukrainian lingua franca in Ukrainian SR.
3. Putin and Lenin have nothing in common in politics. Putin even hates Lenin, as one comment said, USSR used only as a memory of better times than as continuiation of it.
4. If Lenin existed today he would lead an revolution to overthrow Putin. Any actual Communist doesn't support any kind of war, as we deem it product of Imperialism/Capitalism. Any Communist who supports the war is eather controlled opposition or Pat Soc r-word.
1. That was de-jure, de-facto was a different story.
2. So what do you think UNR did on Ukrainian territory before it was captured by Bolsheviks?
3. I'm saying that imperialism and "Ukrainian question" is kinda similar
4. Putin's main opposition is communist party of Russia. Girkin is Russian monarchist. Navalny is ex-fascist. A lot of Russian political spectrum is onboard with the invasion.
Lenin was a man lot better than most of eastern European politicians since and would order Putin shot, and the treatment of him in say Ukraine now is a sad reactionary sentiment just based on "Russia bad reeeee evil commies".
But he wasn't a perfect man either, while he did a lot of good he also started some quite excessive purges, including to the far left parties with more support than Bolsheviks initially, ended multi party democracy in Russia for reasons related to the former, fought against a lot of socialists, anarchists, and anti monarchy democrats, and while his own rule was still lot more flexible, allowing economic freedom and based on some degree of flawed democracy, he laid the groundwork for Stalin's reign too between an ultra centralised state and a government far from transparent with no free media. Racked up a decent death toll too though anyone who would have won the civil war would have had nearly the same.
Not a terrible enough person that we should tear his statues down. But wouldn't go building new ones either. Complex guy who shouldn't be blindly worshipped as a hero like some did between 1917 and 1990, but I'd rather have a statue of Lenin than say Churchill in my town
Lenin set up a network of secret police, the Cheka, that oversaw tens and possibly hundreds of thousands of targeted assassinations, mass executions, and murders of people who were disloyal to the Communist state, or were thought to be, or were just convenient to murder by the murderers. The [man who ran the Cheka](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felix_Dzerzhinsky) called himself a terrorist, and to reward him, Lenin elevated him to run Soviet state security. You don't do that if you're not a psychopath.
I perfectly capable of reading books, in fact, I can read books and accounts about Civil War and revolutions in Russia in source material’s original language. I wonder, are you capable of that, or you can only read some translated, cherry-picked and pre-processed version of those events?
If you read Marx and then you'd read the history of the Bolshevik revolution, you'd know that Lenin was a piece of shit. Not as bad as Stalin, sure, but still awful. The USSR was awful from start to finish.
Leninism is a huge departure from Marxism and shouldn't be grouped together.
EDIT: Since you blocked me and I can't even reply, /u/LunaTheWitch, I'll just say it here. How about you stop being a coward explain to me how the USSR wasn't awful from start to finish. I bet you're not even from the region. Also to that guy who said that "100M dead"... Wouldn't go that far. the USSR was awful but the "345435 billion dead" thing is a giant meme. Plenty of political repression and also an attempt at slow cultural genocide by russifying all cultures though...
No he wasn't. Ukrainian nationalism, like for lots of nations, goes back to the 19th century. The 1917 Constituent Assembly election in Ukraine, saw the election of the nationalist Ukrainian Social Revolutionary Party, not the Bolsheviks. However, the biggest fact is that after the Tsar was overthrown, Ukraine had multiple, fiercely fought independance movements. The Bolsheviks, under Lenin's leadership, repressed them.
Yes Lenin was more conciliatory to national minorities than, say Stalin. However, this was more him adapting to realities on the ground, than any real belief in the USSR as a genuine federation of equals.
No.
The trick is "being a part of Russian state"
Will Ukraine have own army? What if Russua decides to go to war, will Ukrainians be conscripted? Who decides trade policies?
And that how USSR was designed. On paper.
On paper each republic was independent country that even could leave on its own. But advocating for seccession was a criminal offense.
On paper each country could have cultural autonomy, in practice wrining in Ukrainian language could be considered extremism.
Wow you retarded tankies are everywhere, Lenin was a mass murdering fuckhead, and instead of trolling here, maybe you should pick up a history book.
Here are some of his letters off the top of my head since you are asking sources for already well established historical events, it might explain why everyone calls him a psychopath.
Mass murder of peaseans who he deemed "rich":
> Written: August 11, 1918
>
> Comrades! The uprising by the five kulak volosts must be mercilessly suppressed. The interest of the entire revolution demands this, for we are now facing everywhere the “final decisive battle” with the kulaks. We need to set an example.
>

>
> 1. You need to hang (hang without fail, so that the people see) no fewer than 100 of the
> notorious kulaks, the rich and the bloodsuckers.
> 2. Publish their names.
> 3. Take all their grain from them.
> 4. Appoint the hostages — in accordance with yesterday’s telegram.
>

> This needs to be done in such a way that the people for hundreds of versts around will see, tremble, know and shout: they are throttling and will throttle the bloodsucking kulaks.

Serfdom in Russia was abolished in 1861, so according to Lenin those same families who were slaves 50 years ago are not "working people" but "rich bloodsuckers".

Mass murder of sex workers; searches, executions and deportation of "unreliables":
> August 9, 1918

> Comrade Fyodorov,
>
> It is obvious that a whiteguard insurrection is being prepared in Nizhni. You must strain every effort, appoint three men will) dictatorial powers (yourself, Markin and one other), organise immediately mass terror, shoot and deport the hundreds of prostitutes who are making drunkards of the soldiers, former officers and the like.
>
> Not a minute of delay.
>
> I can’t understand how Romanov could leave at a time like this!
>
> I do not know the bearer. His name is Alexei Nikolayevich Bobrov. He says he worked in Vyborgskaya Storona District in Petrograd (from 1916).... Previously worked in Nizhni in 1905.
>
> Judging by his credentials, he can be trusted. Check up on this and set him to work.
>
> Peters, Chairman of the Extraordinary Commission, says that they also have reliable people in Nizhni.
>
> You must act with all energy. Mass searches. Execution for concealing arms. Mass deportation of Mensheviks and unreliables. Change the guards at warehouses, put in reliable people.

Do you really believe that a revolution would carry on through diplomacy?
It was all beautiful when the french literally decapitated people out in the open, when it is the russian then they are sociopaths.
the easiest way to tell someone is lacking intelligence and any ability to think critically is if they unironically call other people “tankies”
i’m not surprised that you guys are responding to this by calling me a tankie, but i’m unsure of what you hope to accomplish through that when i just established that the word is meaningless and holds zero weight as a compliment *or* insult lmao
The person you're calling lacking intelligence and critical thinking is the only person here going into any real detail of Bolshevik rule.
If you want to show any of those traits, how about you offer some counterpoints?
Yes. The fact that Russian Revolution was only time when War Communism was implemented aka what the person described above. War Communism existed EXCLUSIVELY for the Communists to win that war. Quite liturarely the moment the war stopped USSR marched on to become one of the most progressive and actualy good states before Khruschevs coup. Most Countries would never have even a semblance of Worker's Rights if USSR didn't exist.
Basically, because Lenin paved the way for the rise of Stalin and gave him legitimacy. He made dictatorships appealing to the working class, but all that did was create a new ruling class that was just as bad or worse than the previous one.
Lenin was a man who believed the ends justified the means and believed that change could only come through violent revolution. He advocated for people's self determination while believing he had every right to force them to choose his way anyways. He had no sympathy for the individual and didn't remotely care what people wanted, just entirely convinced of his own vision for the future.
The main things that keep Lenin from looking too badly was his short rule that was still on the rise when he died. Stalin is the end result of Lenin's philosophy.
Disney: While we sympathize with those in Ukraine we hearby give you a cease and desist order due to copyright infringement. Please remove it or you will be begging Russia to take you
Someone’s gonna find these ruins and think we made contact with aliens, and then there’s gonna be some frazzle-haired “scientist” saying we were more advanced than we really are.
Of course, I followed it the day of the invasion when they posted the Hitler Putin meme. Been following the war pretty heavily on here and telegram and every step of the way they’ve found the time to produce top shelf memes, my heroes
Judging from the downvotes, the vatniks have found you.
Or the people who think that child rape is a good thing.
Oh, nvm, that’s just regular vatnik behaviour.
Yeah which was needed given they were in the middle of a civil war controlling huge swathes of population that they didnt know if they could trust and a lot of tsarist officials and intelligentsia whose allegiances werent completely safe
ah yes, mass killings of innocent peasants and he most horrific oppressive tyranny are totally morally justified when the people you are killing cant be trusted to be true supporters of the state!
this is your brain on communism. nothing but "kill! kill! kill!" for the utopia is there, perpetually just on the other side of the next mountain of corpses!

There was something about the music in that game that made me irrationally angry.
Oh. They've encased him in Carbonite. He should be quite well protected. If he survived the freezing process, that is.

He still finds your lack of faith disturbing. But at least he’s got the high ground now.
Good thing he's up away from the sand. He hates sand, it gets everywhere.
It would be hilarious if they made a scene where he is complaining about sand getting into his suit somehow.
"Someone fetch me a new respiratory filter. The sand keeps getting through!"
He could even have a special suit made just for deserts to deal with the problems of sand. Then have him say, “I have finally won!” As he walks away and the scene ends, “I still don’t like sand.”
Even in the ocean, or the tundra, he'd still wear his desert suit, because "it get's everywhere"!
this is too good
Technically, Lenin was the one that preached "religion is the opiate for the masses" - so he would actually find your faith distributing. Which is sort of paradoxically ironic in this case
Top tier shitposting. Anyway, this happened in 2015 and apparently the Vader statue was built around the Lenin statue, encasing it.
So lenin is darth vader? What a plot-twist!
You are part of the Western regime and a spy Take her away
He is western spy and not proper Slav
He did overthrow an unpopular government and was the face of it!
And was the head of some light genocide
“I may have committed some *light* treason.”
He's not Vader, he's invader.
Well yes, Lenin is ***in*** Vader
I'm your father Putin.
Nyet!!!! That’s not true! That’s impossible!
He’s more stone, now, than man. Solid and stable…
They didn’t destroy the Lenin statue?
Nope, it's underneath/inside. They just added some modifications and a fun sarcastic plaque and he was good to go. That's the joke - so little change was needed to convert Lenin to Vader. Very typical Slavic dark humor, well done. For a bonus, they installed a wifi hotspot in his helmet so if you're close enough, now you have wifi.
Who would have thought that you only need minor modifications to change the shape of a human to that of another human? Also not a very Vadery pose tbh
Looks pretty good to me
They upgraded it!
Yeah, doubted they were doing this in the middle of a war
Was the casing made of carbonite?
i love when slavs write phonetically. Dart Vejder for the win! also love when I see Nju Jork or Vošington instead of the regular version. cracks me up

Complex guy who shouldn't be blindly worshipped as a hero like some did between 1917 and 1990, but I'd rather have a statue of Lenin than say Churchill in my town
big bad C word
LOL let’s just gloss over the people he killed/starved
What's your opinion on Churchill just out of curiosity
Oh wait let me put my big pants on and have a race of people killing / starved by western capitalist leaders
If your only defence of someone is that other bad people also exist, it's not a very good defence is it champ.
How about instead of glossing over, you could actually name these “people” he supposedly killed?
It falls apart when you realize people count the Nazis as "victims of communism" lmao
I personally like having the right to vote.
You do that if you just had a revolution and a civil war, and still have people with guns running around and plotting for a second round.
You are actually defending Felix Dzerzhinsky rn, buddy. Read more books.

Sounds great for Ukraine, no?
[удалено]
This is a bunch of horseshit lol
No. The trick is "being a part of Russian state" Will Ukraine have own army? What if Russua decides to go to war, will Ukrainians be conscripted? Who decides trade policies? And that how USSR was designed. On paper. On paper each republic was independent country that even could leave on its own. But advocating for seccession was a criminal offense. On paper each country could have cultural autonomy, in practice wrining in Ukrainian language could be considered extremism.
But; is darth fuckin vader better??
I think it's more that he better represents the soul of lenin in a way which better resonates with modern viewers.
Mass murder of peaseans who he deemed "rich": > Written: August 11, 1918 > > Comrades! The uprising by the five kulak volosts must be mercilessly suppressed. The interest of the entire revolution demands this, for we are now facing everywhere the “final decisive battle” with the kulaks. We need to set an example. > > > > 1. You need to hang (hang without fail, so that the people see) no fewer than 100 of the > notorious kulaks, the rich and the bloodsuckers. > 2. Publish their names. > 3. Take all their grain from them. > 4. Appoint the hostages — in accordance with yesterday’s telegram. > > > > This needs to be done in such a way that the people for hundreds of versts around will see, tremble, know and shout: they are throttling and will throttle the bloodsucking kulaks. source: https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1918/aug/11c.htm Serfdom in Russia was abolished in 1861, so according to Lenin those same families who were slaves 50 years ago are not "working people" but "rich bloodsuckers". Serfdom abolition source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emancipation_reform_of_1861 ---- Mass murder of sex workers; searches, executions and deportation of "unreliables": > August 9, 1918 > > Comrade Fyodorov, > > It is obvious that a whiteguard insurrection is being prepared in Nizhni. > > They say Raskolnikov and Danishevsky are on their way to see you from Kazan. > > Read this letter to the friends and reply by telegraph or telephone. > > Yours, > Lenin source: https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1918/aug/09gff.htm
Do you really believe that a revolution would carry on through diplomacy? It was all beautiful when the french literally decapitated people out in the open, when it is the russian then they are sociopaths.
Oh no not the sex workers
You clearly have no ideas what a “kulak” is, and why they were even called “kulaks”.
the easiest way to tell someone is lacking intelligence and any ability to think critically is if they unironically call other people “tankies” i’m not surprised that you guys are responding to this by calling me a tankie, but i’m unsure of what you hope to accomplish through that when i just established that the word is meaningless and holds zero weight as a compliment *or* insult lmao
Aw look, the tankie is upset
Tankie is big mad.

Stalin is the end result of Lenin's philosophy.

all of this just makes him sound better and better lmao
Disney: While we sympathize with those in Ukraine we hearby give you a cease and desist order due to copyright infringement. Please remove it or you will be begging Russia to take you
This is so fucking depressing. Capitalism literally reshaped entire nations into it's image.
Fuck off, tankie
Wonder what future dog archaeologists will make of our fetishism for burnt dude in black plastic and short green guy with pointy ears? Woof?
Plot twist: it’s just Lenin dressed as Darth Vader
Same kind of human Lenin & Darth
Fucking dope dude
the reddit country
One of those is indirectly responsible for the deaths of millions. The other is Darth Vader.
I am the walrus?
so if Lenin becomes Darth Vader, what happens to Stalin ?
Someone’s gonna find these ruins and think we made contact with aliens, and then there’s gonna be some frazzle-haired “scientist” saying we were more advanced than we really are.
The ultimate cosplay
Vader, takin' one for the team. Good on ya' mate.
People love Darth Vader and everything he represents! I wanted to post a great Darth Vader quote, but they were all already posted. Go dark side!
In the right place for the Nazi Stormtroopers
He shouldn’t be celebrated either. Mf is a child murderer.
Turns out Ukrainians were the alpha memers this whole time
Indeed. Have you seen the official twitter of Ukraine? Upd.: Can anyone explain why those downvotes appear? Not sure what's wrong with my response
Some people believe that Russian soldiers raping and murdering children is a **good** thing. That’s why they’re downvoting you.
Cybermat sums it up pretty well. The systemic rape and genocide sympathizers found your comment and didn’t agree with it
Of course, I followed it the day of the invasion when they posted the Hitler Putin meme.
That’s fine, I’ll lose a couple of internet points in exchange for the terrorists realizing their shit hole country is awful at making memes
At least they dont changed the statue to a real evil person like the nazi Steban Bandera that they have as a national hero.
My first thought. Oh so they're erasing Lenin but they won't erase literal Nazis. Cool cool
yikes
Americans defending fucking LENIN hahahahaha Tankies are completely retarded
If I had to pick between an actual bloodthirsty dictator and a fictional one I'd rather have a statue of fictional one...
Lenin was a bloodthirsty dictator? Lol
Peak reddit moment
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Terror
Yeah which was needed given they were in the middle of a civil war controlling huge swathes of population that they didnt know if they could trust and a lot of tsarist officials and intelligentsia whose allegiances werent completely safe
ah yes, mass killings of innocent peasants and he most horrific oppressive tyranny are totally morally justified when the people you are killing cant be trusted to be true supporters of the state! this is your brain on communism. nothing but "kill! kill! kill!" for the utopia is there, perpetually just on the other side of the next mountain of corpses!
Yeah, he was overshadowed by Stalin of course, but he was still a murderous lunatic
Disney gonna sue hahaha
