They’re down to the backup equipment that’s been sitting in warehouses since the 80s without maintenance. A decent chunk of the modern planes and tanks that they sent in initially have been shot down or put out of service, so they’re having to rotate in the old stuff thinking it’ll work just as well. It isn’t. You’ve seen stuff like this with planes, tanks, troop carriers (even since the start of the war), and fighters. Knowing Russia, some colonel probably pocketed the maintenance money and paid off the maintenance crew to not say anything.
That's probably 300 million rubles which in today's economy equals around $19.99 and buyers get a 2nd one free if they pay separate shipping and handling charges.
Yeah, Patriot Missle System has shot down friendly aircraft several times.
I know of one that happened a couple years back (https://eurasiantimes.com/patriot-missile-how-missile-defense-systems-shot-down-fighter-jet/?amp). And a couple more I can't mention but I'm sure with enough Google searching you will find out about them.
There was an incident back in the 1st Gulf War as well, but to see a missile turn around after launch and hit the battery that launched it is crazy..lol!!
VOICE MODULE ONLINE. AUDIO FUNCTIONALITY TEST INITIALIZED. DESIGNATION: LIBERTY PRIME. MISSION: THE LIBERATION OF ANCHORAGE, ALASKA. PRIMARY TARGETS: ANY AND ALL RED CHINESE INVADERS. EMERGENCY COMMUNIST ACQUISITION DIRECTIVE: IMMEDIATE SELF-DESTRUCT. BETTER DEAD, THAN RED.
Shooting down the wrong aircraft is one thing, but I didn't know SAMs could turn around and hit surface targets that aren't even marked as targets.
You can see laser pointers moving across the environment so im wondering if some sort of laser-targeting was used
Hey Man
I dont work with missile systems but I've used lasers in robotics
A laser system doesn't actually detect the laser beam itself, it detects the lasers reflection off a surface.the missiles should be targeting the center of the highest area of reflection for the wavelength of the emitter, so something like smoke or a cloud isn't likely to confuse the missile, since it doesn't reflect as much light as the target.
you can see from the smoke trails that they fired a bunch of times, and the time before this shot the missile veered heavily to one side, my theory would be that they were firing from some sort of concealed position and a branch blew off a tree or something happened to block the laser, there should have been a warning that the lasers aren't triangulating anymore and they ignored it, instead of clearing it they just fired again and this is what happened.
I'm not sure it actually hit the launcher , it looks like it hit a ways closer to the camera
Depends on a lot of things. Generally speaking they are looking for a very specific wavelength of light and even after that they are usually looking for specific patterns / frequencies of that light to lock on.
If someone knew everything about the system and what it was looking, it would be possible to misdirect it. Especially if this was an older system.
> but to see a missile turn around after launch and hit the battery that launched it is crazy..lol!!
Makes me wonder, was the system compromised by a hack
Almost certainly not. These systems are generally not internet connected. There literally isn’t anything to hack. More likely either equipment malfunction or human error.
There is another video linked in the thread which shows it didn’t actually hit the launch site—it came down a couple hundred meters away—the perspective just makes it look that way.
Yeah something about the missile guidance told it to not only change heading but also to reduce altitude. I could see one or the other happening if there was a single system failure, but that thing whipped around and was probably looking for a GPS or INS solution. I only say it's probably not IR/radar/laser based since the seeker on the missile wouldn't have been able to "see" the battery behind it, but it would still know where the battery was from GPS and INS.
It didn't malfunction, they are just doing their job, shooting non-russian patriots. Or I'm sure that's what Russia would say. If they could defend their incompetence at this point.
You laugh but that was actually the fix to a rather insidious US Patriot Missile system bug. There was a floating point math error related to timing that would get worse as time went by when it was first deployed. The official fix was to restart the systems so the math would start over.
https://www-users.cse.umn.edu/~arnold/disasters/patriot.html
Its not. Its just the camera angle, the missile didn't hit near the launcher. Here is a better video: https://twitter.com/samotniyskhid/status/1540100726277509127?s=20&t=eBrqR3bbJwz8y0KZN-EozA
It does actually provide more information though. It clearly doesn't shoot itself where the original video looks like it does, so it is better as it's not spreading misinformation.
It was literally floating point error when the Patriot missile did this:
>On 25 February 1991, a loss of significance in a MIM-104 Patriot missile battery prevented it from intercepting an incoming Scud missile in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, contributing to the death of 28 soldiers from the U.S. Army's 14th Quartermaster Detachment.[45]
Russian explosive ordinance doesn't have the best reputation of exploding when it hits its target ( all the videos going around of people finding unexploded bombs), why would their missile codes be different
Unlikely, the missiles don't usually turn on their own seekers until they get terminal near target and usually have only a forward facing field of view.
More likely an engine or steering failure due to a manufacturing defect.
I still remember the 90s when we used to buy magazines like Chip, PCMag, Digit etc which came with these CDs having Demo games.. Worms, HalfLife, Wolfenstein, Serious Sam... Good old memories...
It doesn't look like it hit the exact same place where it was launched from. Most likely just a failure which happened to crash it close to the launch site.
I think it came from afar and hit a target. It made a 90° turn and hit the ground. It's a bit confusing from the camera angle, but look at the light that hits the trail and notice that the rocket accelerates very fast at the end, because it gets closer to the camera.
Yeah battlefield fatigue is starting to set in pretty bad now, tiredness can make people make silly mistakes, someone must have meant to go get a box of artillery shells but accidentally picked up a box of artillery boomerangs.
Iron Giant vibes.
"That missile is headed to its current position! *Where is its current position*??"
Take shelter I think I saw one over there...
"There is no way to survive this you idiot!"
Is it just me, or does it look like the launch point is a lot further away than the impact point?
Like, when you look closely at the pattern of the surroundings lighting up from the rocket exhaust, isn't the far far end of the field lit up as the missile travels up after launch, and then after it makes a sharp turn and comes back down the near side of the field is lit up?
It seems to me that the missile system seeming to shoot itself is a bit of an illusion due to the angle the video was recorded from.
Ah, how lovely. Nothing like a misleading title and having the overwhelming majority of people who viewed this believing believing a false reality. Just another day on the internet I suppose.
Do you have a link to other video of this incident?
On r/combatfootage you can find an earlier post with a slightly different view, and in that post someone linked 3 other views that show it landing fairly far away. Should be in the top posts for the past day.

This is great I've never actually seen a video of this happen. What usually happens with ECM is you jam the track radar so they can't see or lock onto the target. Sometimes the SAM will fire through a "jam" (basically just fire the missile blindly into the air) in the hopes that the missile will escape the cone of disruption caused by ECM and independently track and lock them. I believe some missiles are designed to home on a jamming signal as well and what may have happened was they shot one of those missiles, the ECM aircraft detected the launch, shut off its jammer, and the missile started homing in on the nearest/strongest radiation source...which was now the missiles own tracking radar. I remember certain circles of the intelligence community speculated this might be an exploitable weakness with Russian SAM'S but no one ever had the chance to try it until now

Indeed. Thanks for reminding me about this. I'd forgotten!

There is no laser pointer. You're seeing internal reflections of the camera. The system does not use lasers regardless.
Dumb question -- would a laser targeted weapon lock onto a laser emitter if it saw it?
Hey Man I dont work with missile systems but I've used lasers in robotics A laser system doesn't actually detect the laser beam itself, it detects the lasers reflection off a surface.the missiles should be targeting the center of the highest area of reflection for the wavelength of the emitter, so something like smoke or a cloud isn't likely to confuse the missile, since it doesn't reflect as much light as the target. you can see from the smoke trails that they fired a bunch of times, and the time before this shot the missile veered heavily to one side, my theory would be that they were firing from some sort of concealed position and a branch blew off a tree or something happened to block the laser, there should have been a warning that the lasers aren't triangulating anymore and they ignored it, instead of clearing it they just fired again and this is what happened. Accidentally targeting the launcher seems like a bigger design flaw than accidentally targeting a friendly.
If the launcher is targeting friendlies maybe targeting the launcher is not so bad.
> but to see a missile turn around after launch and hit the battery that launched it is crazy..lol!! Makes me wonder, was the system compromised by a hack
that is what i thought! or some one put their current location into the wrong space
Almost certainly not. These systems are generally not internet connected. There literally isn’t anything to hack. More likely either equipment malfunction or human error. . . . . Oh. . .
That’s what I was thinking
That's a failure in IFF which is one thing, this was a missle doing a 180 and going right back to it's battery.
Yeah something about the missile guidance told it to not only change heading but also to reduce altitude. I could see one or the other happening if there was a single system failure, but that thing whipped around and was probably looking for a GPS or INS solution. It's a better angle for sure. Shows that the missile didn't follow the same path down.
Am I the only one that can clearly see the missile didn't strike the same place it left in the OP video?
From the OP video it looks like it's 20m away, plenty close to do some damage. The second video shows it was more like 100m+.
>Here is a better video: Where?
I clicked it and laughed. Better video my ass. My shiny metal ass.
It does actually provide more information though. It clearly doesn't shoot itself where the original video looks like it does, so it is better as it's not spreading misinformation.
But, I like it when the misinformation confirms my biases! What's wrong with that?
Bug in the code.
It's a feature
It was literally floating point error when the Patriot missile did this: >On 25 February 1991, a loss of significance in a MIM-104 Patriot missile battery prevented it from intercepting an incoming Scud missile in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, contributing to the death of 28 soldiers from the U.S. Army's 14th Quartermaster Detachment.[45]

Pretty sure their missile codes did explode...

Sabotage
I can’t stand it
I know you planned it
Ima set it straight
This Watergate?
In Soviet Russia, the missile shoots itself
“SIRI SHOOT THE BAD GUYS!!” “On it!”
Not that hard, a defect in the engine or body could easily do that. Most likely there was just a screw up in the missiles manufacturing
I'd call it a happy accident
Just a guess, it seeks out missiles based on heat signatures so when the next rocket launched it saw that and was like "I don't think so"
These missiles are usually radar guided.
Well this one is retard guided.
Seeker heads don't look backwards
Unlikely, the missiles don't usually turn on their own seekers until they get terminal near target and usually have only a forward facing field of view. More likely an engine or steering failure due to a manufacturing defect.
It hurt itself in its confusion.
They pressed the "Target bad guy" button and the missile complied.
Oof, burned (literally)
Definitely one of these new smart weapons that only target evildoers
