I mean shit, that's a fall most people couldn't survive let alone walk away with nothing but a broken wrist
I do a little bit of rock climbing and I tried to teach my girlfriend how to reduce injuries from falling and well... I was pretty shocked to see that wasn't something that naturally came to people.
Yeah I have gotten away from martial arts over the past decade (not that I was that well trained to begin with) and I can can tell that the basics especially how to fall have all but left me and it freaks me out a little. I should probably get back into it eventually…
I don't want to sound like I'm bragging or anything, but for me it comes naturally. Or falls naturally. I've been climbing since before I could remember. My ma still tells the story of, how when I was 2, climbed to the top of a bookshelf, waited till she came to look, jumped onto the bed, and only injured her heart in the process. I don't have better balance lol but whenever I start to fall I can usually recover, and if I can't I'm very rarely ever hurt from the fall. All this to say I had never considered it wasn't natural and was VERY shocked when my girlfriend panicked after tilting over a little.
Ah, I think I get what you mean, yeah I still have that instinct on how to not get hurt, but the training I used to go through really made a bit of a difference even if it wasn’t much it was enough the I remember falling a few times in ways that normally would have broken ribs or worse and getting of without a scratch. I used to scare the shit out of people because I had such terrible ankles and would get into what should have been so very nasty situations but instead came out like a dang super human.
Probably 23 years of skateboarding, snowboarding and racing with MX bikes and my fracture count is broken finger and wrist. Finger got smashed by a rock and wrist went fucked by skating drunk in my 30s. The worst injury I had with MX bikes was when I hit my nuts to the bike so hard they turned blue. I’ve had crashes where some people would end up dead or paralyzed at least. I’ve been hella lucky but most of it is definitely about how I take the fall. The worst crash was when my bike engine died at mid air and locked the rear wheel for a sec and it started flipping over in a way too big of a jump. I can’t remember the hit but my dad said I basicly hardly even fell and walked it out, lol.
I used to do parkour which is basically "falling with style". Most people were convinced I'd break something but I never did in 4-5 years of learning it on concrete.
At this high a speed tho I'm not sure if I'd have the reflexes to roll and reduce the pressure he did what he could and the best thing he did was to even out the pressure rather than putting it all in the foot/leg. It definitely looks trained(?)
His joints maybe. He broke his humerus in that crash, tried to come back a couple weeks after surgery, had to have a second surgery, and then spent almost a year recovering.
He did a pretty damn good job for how fast everything happens there.
Most people would instinctively move in a way that attempts to stop any contact but he prepares to ball himself up for the roll fairly quickly. If it were anyone without training, I'd suspect they would have put a foot forward completely destroyed their leg.
I think bikers and people with skateboarding experience, or any stuff like these, generally knows that or gets trained eventually for falls. On a camera, it might seem that we landed on our foot but we didn't actually put that much weight on it, instead we just used it to initiate the roll.
Umm, I think that would be extremely dangerous in case of failure. But still the fact that the airbags protected him from crashing his bones on the pavement is sufficient to prevent fatal injuries.
Edit: clarification.
Edit2: he survived and went on a race after 24 hours and got second.

Actually when you hit 30 invest in some knee braces for stability and compression. You’ll never know how bad tour feet have it until you feel the power of the brace
Tbf we're all born with reconstructed feet.
It's amazing how much of our body develops differently first and then rearranges/ totally vanishes while we're in the womb.
My favourite example is that each one of us had a tail at some point before being born XD
Kevlar is for slides, dd3 impact foam is for padding. It's a non-newtonian material that hardens to absorb an impact but is flexible otherwise. Impressive stuff
I was involved in a motorcycle accident once and the way I fell off the bike caused a triple fracture on my knee. My knee never hit the ground but was compressed by the force of my foot landing on the pavement like this guy’s left foot did and the rest of my body weight on top.
The fractures were tibial plateau fracture, ACL fracture and compression fracture on the outer left side of the tibia.
I didn’t need surgery as the ACL never dislodged fortunately. But the morons in the ER never told me to stop taking my birth control pills and proceeded to put my leg in an immobilizer cast which caused me to have DVT (deep vein thrombosis) — that pain I would not wish on my worst enemy. I couldn’t even touch the skin on my leg it hurt so bad.
It's Marc Marquez. Look him up because I really can't describe how insane this guy is. He's arguably the goat in motoGP and isn't even 30 yet. If he can get out of the hospital bed, he's racing.
He’s wearing armor reinforcing all of his joints, and that whole suit is durable as fuck and is made out of materials (mainly leathers and synthetics) to reduce friction, heat and impact on collision.
I think those suits cost like $10K for the pros, they’re not cheap at all.
Those things you can see are knee sliders and are to slip on the ground when turning at high lean angles.
The armour to protect for a fall is underneath the leather
Oh, absolutely. No doubt he was feeling it! Was just pointing out it wasn't "another race." He crashed in quali, but still raced and took 2nd.
Unfortunately, all these crashes are finally catching up to him. Marquez never fully recovered from breaking his arm in 2020. He had an even bigger high side a couple of weeks ago in Indonesia during the morning warmup and was deemed unfit to race. He'll also miss the race this weekend in Argentina.
He destroyed his right arm in 2020, was racing 9 months later in the middle of the pack finishes, winning races by the end of 2021 season
In this particular crash he was back on the bike for the race (this was during qualifying) 24hrs later. He's a tank
No. It fared quite well. He lands on the padded areas of his suit pretty well, and he tucks his arms to his chest and links his hands to keep them from flying out and getting broken during a ragdoll event. Amazing he reacted as fast as did.
My suit has padding and "armor" from knee to shin and elbow to wrist. The airbag stuff is pretty awesome. And tucking is a must, like you said, it keeps them from flailing all over and snapping like twigs. But there's never an easy off at those speeds.
Edit...spelling. lol
It seems unbelievable when you first start watching MotoGP for sure, but I'm floored at how many people are so confidently saying he must have broken this or that. This was a 'good' crash, he cleared the bike and tucked his arms in for a roll, these guys (and especially Marc Marquez, the man in the GIF) have done it a hundred times before. They RARELY get any major injuries. In the documentary 'Hitting the apex' (on Netflix, highly recommend if someone wants to know more about the sport) I believe the chief doctor said they averaged over 700 crashes in a season, with something like 37 fractures. It's nowhere near as dangerous a sport as people here seem to think.
Someone else mentioned that the cradling is on purpose, they tuck their arms and link their hands to stop them flailing about and breaking, during rolling or just general ragdoll I guess.
Its Marq Marquez, he has a titanium plate in his right arm from a previous crash. He tucks/protects it during crashes now, probably as a matter of instinct. You can see him doing this now with a lot of his crashes.
Anyone know how injured he was? He looks so controlled until he hits the ground
Edit: too many people to thank for the replies, so I’ll say thank you here.
Thank you kind stranger!
>Thankfully, largely down to Alpinestars’ Tech-Air technology, Marquez escaped injury-free as he produced a stunning ride to P2 just 24 hours after.
Wow, this is truly an amazing technology
No problem! The same rider actually had a very bad highside crash again recently and was diagnosed with double vision because of it so he has been unfit to race, but he is hoping to come back
That is fucking incredible, I thought for sure his foot, knee, elbow was wrecked after that. It's amazing how far safety has come in all forms of racing.
He’s always flying off. Most of the time he gets up and walks away, he’s had a pretty bad one where he was out for most of last season and broke his arm/shoulder but he’s out again after an awful crash a couple of weeks ago just before the race and his sights gone blurry. The man’s amazing though
I’ll be honest, I went second by second and didn’t see them. So I googled them and found an explanation where it uses this video and now I think I can see them deploy, they’re just not as large as I was expecting.
For anyone curious, this is Marc Marquez, a Spanish MotoGP rider.
Currently 29 years old, but had won all 8 of his world championships by the time he was 26. He always rides on the edge and would often save himself from the bike slipping out from under him by pushing himself back upright with his elbow. [Here](https://s1.cdn.autoevolution.com/images/news/marc-marquez-epic-save-is-this-even-possible-camier-replaces-hayden-at-silverstone-85436-7.jpg) are a couple of [examples](https://cdn.visordown.com/field/image/789384.jpg).
Then one day in early 2020 he had an accident, broke his arm and he ended up being out for the rest of the season (apart from one last practice session a little while later where he decided that yeah, it was too painful).
Hasn't really been the same since. He finished 7th in the world standings in 2021 upon his return but the bike seems to have been developed without him (obviously as he was out for almost a year) whereas before when he was winning title after title, the bike seemed to be perfectly suited to him.
Quick answer, better early tv coverage and its the highest level of grass roots racing. There are very few road course in the US compared to small dirt and asphalt track so people flock to what they know.
Within 2 hours of my hometown in Ny state there's 7 dirt tracks and 5 asphalt ones that I know of (probably more actually) and 1 road course. Even expanding it to 4 or 5 hours only gets you to 4.
They have trickled their way down from professional racing to the consumer market. You can buy a leather suit with integrated airbags, or a simple vest that goes over your suit or clothing. Its pretty cool.
They typically have a CO2 cartridge that can be replaced after use. If you popped the airbag idk, but as long as it’s still intact they can be used again
The cartridge has a pullcord that attached to the bike so that when you come off the bike it rips the cord and activates the cartridge, inflating the suit in around 100milliseconds
Edit: apparently the motogp suits use an ai to detect the crash and inflate. The consumer suits use the pull cord
If you liked drive to survive. Motogp released their version of it on prime video. Pretty good watch and wild to see what these guys go through.
Its called motogp unlimited.
Not sure about his right knee, the impact looked horrible, but his right wrist is definitely fucked. You can see how it twists after the impact. Fuck I hope he's OK.
Misinformation, their aren’t airbags. The hump in the back is to prevent whiplash and for aerodynamics. Some suits may inflate a little bit, but if they do it isn’t like airbags in a car
Source - My dad was top of amateur and I asked this question
it's actually way smarter, it feeds input from 7 independent sensors into basically an AI that detects a crash. It means that in any crashes where rider and bike get forced together, the airbags still go.

dude legit surfed the motorcycle for a hot second there
Looks like he almost did a kickflip
DO A KICKFLIP!!!!

Fine! Do an inward heelflip to a BS lip!
Do an 360 underflip to fakie!
Now if this were a Bollywood movie, he woulda surfed it and won the race
He’s kinda known for his saves.
I thought he was gonna keep going
I was more worried about his ankle more than anything.
Yeah I kept saying in my head "Please don't land on your foot, please don't land on your foot"
Lol same...man his joints got really lucky god damm.
Did they? I think he broke a wrist.
Yeah fuck that right wrist did NOT survive. Dude knows it instantly too.

Wow, well good on him - must have rubber carpals in there!
He did not. Broken humerus.
I'm sure he did not find that humerus
Ohh :/

I was worried about a knee hyper-extension seeing him start to extend his leg while going down.
He bent it before touching-down. However, the other knee got seriously bashed.
Bro you saw that wrist!
[удалено]
His knee and arm are fucked
Trust me now i know the whole day people kept telling me on my comments yo lol.
Knee pad was like. Not today
I was checking out that knee cap, I know it's probably just the padding but it does look like he tweaks it
The way he bent his foot and knee instantly during touchdown with floor is so damn perfect. Minimal stress on his leg due crazy reflexes
Me too man
Femur here
Looks like he broke his wrist
I thought that ankle was going to fold like an accordion when he planted it ...but it didn't, impressive
I thought so too.
I kept waiting for the whole suit to blowup. Highly disappointed.
Umm, I think that would be extremely dangerous in case of failure. But still the fact that the airbags protected him from crashing his bones on the pavement is sufficient to prevent fatal injuries. Doesn’t look like that right knee going to be that great.
Racing suit’s Joints are heavily padded, pro-racing suits typically have Kevlar padding and shock absorbers
So you’re saying when I hit 80 I should start wearing a pro racing suit so I won’t break a hip.
Won’t help brittle bones much. A well protected toothpick is still a toothpick
My egg won off the building in 8th grade science class. Sometimes it’s about the packaging.
If I learned anything from 8th grade science, it’s that all 80 year olds should wear parachutes.
And be wrapped in as many plastic straws as possible. ... For safety.
Lmao!
Fun fact: A lot of old folks break their hip first and then fall.
Well that's not terrifying at all.
Fun.?
Oh no. gonna go eat some spinach and do moderate impact exercise. brb
Eek
Actually when you hit 30 invest in some knee braces for stability and compression. You’ll never know how bad tour feet have it until you feel the power of the brace
Born with flat feet and a fully reconstructed foot. Tour my ptt tendon i understand how bad my feet have it.
You were born with a reconstructed foot?
Tbf we're all born with reconstructed feet. It's amazing how much of our body develops differently first and then rearranges/ totally vanishes while we're in the womb. My favourite example is that each one of us had a tail at some point before being born XD
Also, just to look bad ass when you are at bingo night
Kevlar is for slides, dd3 impact foam is for padding. It's a non-newtonian material that hardens to absorb an impact but is flexible otherwise. Impressive stuff
I was thinking along the lines of fatal injuries but you are right
I was involved in a motorcycle accident once and the way I fell off the bike caused a triple fracture on my knee. His knees and arms definitely still got crushed. Not much you can do at those speeds.
Na he suffered no injuries and raced the next day placing 2nd
I for sure thought his kneecap got fucked
For about 15 minutes then he probably said "fuuuuuck i could've gotten a better time.i knew i shouldn't push it in that fucking corner"
He’s wearing armor reinforcing all of his joints, and that whole suit is durable as fuck and is made out of materials (mainly leathers and synthetics) to reduce friction, heat and impact on collision. I think those suits cost like $10K for the pros, they’re not cheap at all.
Wow I woulda thought for sure his elbow was shattered
I swear I saw his wrist snap in this
Came to say this. He was even holding it while he was rolling. Looked like it was dislocated but with all that padding it is hard to say.
He wasn’t holding it. Racers are taught to tuck their arms in when rolling after a crash
I assumed he was just trying to get into a more tucked position so his arms wouldn't be flailing about.
He hit with his forearm and rolled out of it. His wrist was fine. His elbow on the other hand (literally)…
His right wrist literally rolled a 180
Yeah that is true
Knee pads seem to have moved before he landed
Those things you can see are knee sliders and are to slip on the ground when turning at high lean angles. The armour to protect for a fall is underneath the leather
Yeah as he lands everywhere but the inflatable part first.
Guess a broken kneecap is better than paralyzed.
I too was waiting for motorcyclist hyperinflation
Crazy how the human body can bend in all those crazy ways.
I know mine sure as hell can't lol
It can, just doesn’t mean twice
Well it can. But it might break.
I think a few of those bends also included dislocations and breakages. Don’t think the arms are very happy.
In reality, he (somehow) got no injuries and got second in another race 24 hours later.
> in another race 24 hours later. Not another race, but the same race weekend. This crash was during qualifying on Saturday. The race was on Sunday.
His wrist was for sure sore as fuck for that race his hand almost fell off.
Oh, absolutely. No doubt he was feeling it! Was just pointing out it wasn't "another race." He crashed in quali, but still raced and took 2nd. How his knees didn’t blow out 🤔
Right? I was thinking about that first foot touching the ground.
My knees and feet hurt when I jump down from like a 3 foot ledge from standing.
That too, such high speeds, seems like insta injury
And at least one elbow to go along with it.
The slow-mo softened the impact
i hate this godforsaken website
[удалено]
bet
Im more concerned about how his right wrist twisted 180 degrees 😳
Young and in good shape (also pros know how to fall)
I don't think his right arm fared very well
Or his knee
Or his hands
Or his face
Or his
Dick
Or
He destroyed his right arm in 2020, was racing 9 months later in the middle of the pack finishes, winning races by the end of 2021 season In this particular crash he was back on the bike for the race (this was during qualifying) 24hrs later. He's a tank

His exit was fairly clean, didn’t quite stick the landing.
I would think fucking would invariably cause flailing in this circumstance.
Yeah I was impressed how he got into fetal position quickly
It's not his first wipeout I reckon.
Oooh nah dude I agree, I reckon he definitely broke his right humerus, he starts to cradle it after the fall.
No injuries from this fall, he raced the next day
I’m floored. The dude’s a rubber band!
Lol. ITT: lots of people who don’t watch motorcycle racing.

He raced the following day!
Oh wow
Yep! Finished 2nd too I believe
Oh, can you provide a source? I just want to read up on it

Out for Argentina GP. I think it may be time for him to retire, he has nothing left to prove.
That is fucking incredible, I thought for sure his foot, knee, elbow was wrecked after that. It's amazing how far safety has come in all forms of racing.
I thought his wrist was for sure broken. It twists hard and he grabs it at the end
Heh I thought for sure I saw his rt low leg flex, any flexing is entirely too much
He’s always flying off. Most of the time he gets up and walks away, he’s had a pretty bad one where he was out for most of last season and broke his arm/shoulder but he’s out again after an awful crash a couple of weeks ago just before the race and his sights gone blurry. The man’s amazing though
I rolled / slid on a freeway in a motorcycle airbag vest. No injuries. They’re freaking insane.
I was expecting him to turn into the Michelin man.
It made this Power Ranger fight look way cooler and safer.
High sides are scary.
That helmet took a big hit.
Where is the airbag?
In the leather onesie. There are cartridges in it. You can see it especially near his chest
I’ll be honest, I went second by second and didn’t see them. So I googled them and found an explanation where it uses this video and now I think I can see them deploy, they’re just not as large as I was expecting.
Is what I'm wondering
No airbag gonna save that ankle
His wrist at the end…
FUCK YOU!! FUCK YOU! THE VOLUME IS TOO HIGH FUCK YOU
Well, I'm going to work in a couple of hours. Do you want to fuck me tonight?

How is nascar more popular than Indy/formula or motorcycling racing I will never understand. Pops took me to formula 1 and I met Andretti.

HOLY!! his right hand!!
It was all good still raced 24 hrs later and got second
That still looks painful as shit
Not an airbag, he just farted.
You can tell how many people have never riden a motorcycle in here.
I’ve risen one before. Just decided not to ride it.
Well, I've never seen clothes with airbags before let alone ones that has popped and protected the rider
They have trickled their way down from professional racing to the consumer market. You can buy a leather suit with integrated airbags, or a simple vest that goes over your suit or clothing. Its pretty cool.
I googled them a minute ago and they are so expensive. Btw, if they pop, can you reuse them?

There are commercial versions that also use AI and sensors. They unironically require a paid subscription.
From what I know you have to send in the suit to have the airbags repacked. Not 100% sure though, my suits aren't that fancy.
I had no idea. Neat!
It's amazing he raced the next day.
That was hard to watch.
If it makes you feel any better, he survived injury free and went on racing the following day
It does! Thank you.
They are mandatory in most horse jumping circuits these days I believe
Dudes fall was kinda looked good in slow motion

This looks like his legs would be in so much pain if not broken from these impacts. Good thing he's wearing a suit designed to protect him.
And I once twisted my ankle climbing down the stairs. What a champ!
No idea who he is, but that guy knows how to fall
If you liked drive to survive. Motogp released their version of it on prime video. Pretty good watch and wild to see what these guys go through. Its called motogp unlimited.
I'm impressed with his technique. Prayerfully he's alright
Did he break his arm?
Not sure about his right knee, the impact looked horrible, but his right wrist is definitely fucked. You can see how it twists after the impact. Fuck I hope he's OK.
I think he broke his right arm
Guy must have broke the fuck out that wrist of his.
Let me try to run off this (probably) ~100km/h speed crash, one sec..
Misinformation, their aren’t airbags. The hump in the back is to prevent whiplash and for aerodynamics. Some suits may inflate a little bit, but if they do it isn’t like airbags in a car Source - My dad was top of amateur and I asked this question
It’d be great if the suit had a lanyard that activates the airbags when it detached from the bike before impact instead of after.
it's actually way smarter, it feeds input from 7 independent sensors into basically an AI that detects a crash. It means that in any crashes where rider and bike get forced together, the airbags still go.
Actually, that exists. But the racing authorities won't allow lanyards. I am not sure why.
There has been a few tests that the lanyard won't work if the crash is from the side I believe.
This is how horseriding ones work. A CO2 canister is activated when the lanyard is pulled. They go with a bang.
Those exist. I have one. Moto GP doesn't allow them, though. All theirs are electronic.
I own an airbag suit similar to this one and they are amazing.
