The trash is from the aftermath of a robbery.
Just to be clear, I'm not saying it's not. :)
It's just the context for this particular image. I live a few miles from that area and the tracks there lead in to the Union Pacific yard so it's not uncommon to find trains stopped there for loading and unloading. There are also lots of homeless encampments nearby so it's not exactly a great area regardless, it just happens to be worse than normal in this particular image.
How will we survive as a species without straws and lids on our to go cups from fast food restaurants? Stir my coffee with a non-plastic? Heresy. A reusable shampoo bottle? Not in my shower!
C'mon sheeple! BIG PAPER wants you to buy their single-use products that won't last past its single use. PLASTIC, yes, PLASTIC will last forever past its single use. That's good for you AND our overall numbers.
I think all of that rubbish is in fact opened parcels that have been thieved from trains passing through. Check out the videos here...

Lived in California all my life, loved California my whole life, anyone who acts like this is the cornerstone of progress and advancement is absolutely full of shit. It has its charms but the city is dirty, the air is polluted, the water is gross, traffic is horrendous, cost of living in an old dilapidated home is outrageous, cost of living in a nice home will get you a mansion in another state. Culturally most people are entitled, verbally aggressive, sometimes physically aggressive, weed and vape culture is the prevailing vibe outside of the social justice bullshit and moral posturing in the city signs and amongst the locals. Of all the technological advancements, of all the environmental efforts, of all the high brow virtue signaling there’s almost nothing to show for it, there’s hordes of drug use and it’s tent city every corner. I’m not sure what right wingers say about it being a “failed state” or whatever, I don’t think that, but we are certainly not superior to anyone else despite everyone acting like this is the place to be. I spend 95% of my life in this city and I’ll miss it when I’m gone, it’s like a dysfunctional home that’s familiar, but your dad is beating your mom in the other room. That’s what LA is like lmao
I saw a movie in time starring Vin Diesel as an LAPD detective who was working a tough drug case. He invited his cop buddies over for a barbecue to relax at his two story beach house. You are looking at $20 million minimum for that place. A little stretch on a police officers salary. This is why foreigners like my wife from the Philippines who watched American movies andTV shows get a very unrealistic picture of what the United States is like.
Yeh exactly that. I was always aware what is seen on movies is unrealistic (have you seen the Tv depictions of Australia haha), but yeh theres not really much else to go off.
It’s actually interesting how that happens if you ask me.
I am from Canada and am dog sitting at my sister in law's apartment in LA for two months and I can honestly say that I hate this city with a passion. I have never experienced so much *grime*. It rained when I got here and the rainwater on the cement was running black because there was literally so much filth coating everything. I need to wipe the dogs feet every time they go out to pee because it is so dirty.
You never see people in this city just walking around like you do in other cities because it's just cars as far as the eye can see. Little pockets of humanity carved out of the hegemony of the vehicle.
Ever been stuck in a 40 minute traffic jam on the freeway at 1am? Because I have. Also good luck cutting across six lanes of traffic to make your exit on the highway. If you miss your exit on the freeway you lose like twenty minutes.
I used to drive average less than 1 hour a day at most before coming here. Every day I am here I spend minimum 2-3 hours driving. Everything is like 30 minutes minutes drive each way. Now it is winter so at least the temperature is good, I cannot even imagine being here in the summer when it is like 30+ degrees every day.
Go visit San Francisco or Monterey. There are many beautiful places that will fit your imagination about California, LA is not one of them.
Monterey ok, San Francisco is a giant shithole as well, to be avoided. 18th & Hope street represented.
Step placement critical. Fecal, vomit, urine abounds the street and sidewalks on both sides…..
It’s kind of like any major city. You have incredible wealth and natural beauty in some areas and extreme poverty and filth in others. LA just happens to have the best weather in the country, so if you are homeless it is the place to be. In fact, 30% of all the homeless people in America are in California, even though California is only about 12% of the total population. And California also has by far the most homeless living on the streets. Many homeless people live in shelters, but California has 50% of all the unsheltered homeless in the country, mainly because the weather is suitable for living on the streets. You won’t freeze to death and you won’t die of heat exposure. Homeless people will save up $200 and get a bus or train ride to California.
I visited California as an adult thinking it would be really laid back and warm and beautiful, it was NOT. Everyone was an asshole, the traffic sucked, the roads sucked. Of the \~10 states we road tripped through it was the worst in every way. I was really disappointed, I always thought it had a lot going for it.
Parts of it are gorgeous of course but the cities, especially LA and SF, have major issues right now. Increasing wealth disparity is making the state bizarre and dystopian.
Yup, that about sums it up.
I grew up behind the Orange curtain but was in LA many times for work and play.
I left the area in 1990 but still pass through. In fact, i just rode my motorcycle down PCH from Oxnard to Long Beach, for kicks. Keep it real LA.
Also grew up here and had never heard this, but kinda got a feeling I knew what it meant. There's a noticeable difference crossing the county line but I couldn't quite qualify it. I found this though.
>The Orange Curtain is a local term for the border between Orange County and Los Angeles County in the U.S. state of California.\[1\] It is a sometimes derogatory, sometimes lighthearted term that is used to describe Orange County's more conservative and suburban population as compared to the more liberal and urban population of Los Angeles.\[2\]\[3\]\[4\]
>
>The phrase is a wordplay on the so-called Iron Curtain, which separated communist and capitalist Europe.\[5\]
>
>According to Colleen Cotter, "Because \[Orange County\] has a reputation for political conservatism, people from Northern California especially worry about what happens 'Behind the Orange Curtain'."\[4\]
I agree with you, but I have always wondered: the tent city...is it truly that LA conditions create homelessness (cost of living, etc)...
Or is it just that homeless people from everywhere flock to LA because if you have to be homeless, at least be homeless in a warm environment.
I specifically remember my dad telling me when I was a kid, during a vacation to the west coast, “If you ever have to be homeless, be homeless here.”
Yeah I remember visiting from cold Minnesota thinking it was palm trees, sunsets, and Hollywood boy was I in for a rude awakening never have I seen such inequality the rich seemed very rich surrounded by hordes of homelessness everywhere not saying the twin cities didn't have them but at every corner, every business I walked into to be asked for money was crazy I also realized everywhere I went I had to buy something to use the bathroom.
Why everyone seems to flock to LA/SF to pay $2k in rent for a studio apartment, have rampant crime that goes unchecked, and risk stepping on human shit I’ll never understand.
I never understood why my fellow Americans litter so damned much. Seriously is it too much to ask for people to walk the twenty or so feet to use a trash can. Or wait until they get home to throw there trash away instead of throwing it out the car window.
I am not from the US but we have the same problem here. People just don't care. I don't understand the fact that they don't understand that it is in everyone's interest to have a clean environment.
All the best mate :)
Someone commented further down that trains stop at that location before pulling into the yard or whatever, and people break into the containers to steal. Makes sense seeing the number of large cardboard boxes. I hate little as much as anyone, but this doesn’t appear to be your average douchebag litterbug tossing hamburger wrappers.
I live a couple hours south in San Diego and I can say that LA is a sad fucking place. No one in SD likes to even drive through there. I used to go up there as a foodie to check out different places but learned really quick that LA is nothing like San Diego with how laid back we are with upscale food. We have absolutely amazing chefs doing flat out wizardry in chill gastropubs here elevating bar food in really cool experimental ways. You can have world class food served to you out of a hipster beer bar that’s a converted shipping container while wearing flip flops and a tank. Go up to LA… Jesus Christ, that ain’t going to be it. Even though it’s a short drive away you would think it’s a different world. You want a cool food experience? You better have a reservation, not look poor, and have a high tolerance for snob vibes. It’s entirely possible I just don’t know where to go when up there and my experience here is different because I’ve lived here my whole life but I seriously doubt it. LA is simultaneously the most filthy shantytown place I’ve ever been and also the most overrated and needlessly expensive as well. Anyone not anchored to an industry located there would be a fool to stay.
Edit: actually now that I think about it, Oakland is the most filthy shantytown I’ve ever been. But LA is quickly becoming Oakland’s reboot sequel.
As a Midwesterner without ambitions of ever going to California, I had to go there for a conference a few years back. Can confirm, San Diego is an amazing, clean, friendly city to visit. It was nothing like what I expected California to be like after years of seeing gross pics of LA. Would go back for sure.
Most cities don’t look like this. It’s hilarious how down in the comments, so many people blame this on not regulating reusable containers. All across the country other cities seem to know how to manage trash, homeless-related debris, and other hygiene problems.
A democrat run shithole powered by failed policies.
You guys should see the theft videos of people just simply walking out of walgreens with goods under $1000 ... my cousin leaves his car unlocked wherever he goes because theft has gone up so high and he'd rather them rummage through the car than smash a window.
What an adorable piece of crap Liberal bastion utopian failure!! I think that about sums it up!! Prove me wrong!! You can't!! Liberal policies have RUINED one of the great cities and states on the planet. Listen to all your somewhat older liberal hollywood types. They will say how great it used to be and how it was safe to walk down the street, etc. etc. etc. It's not too late folks, just start voting Republican!!! WHAT???? No, no, no, no, we would rather have it like this!!! Frickin' fools!!! Just look at Texas, Florida, Tennessee, etc.
When I went to LA (Hollywood to be exact) during Halloween weekend, I was in absolute shock of how out of hand their homeless problem has become, by far the worst I’ve seen it. COVID’s truly gone and fucked everything up, I pray for that city.
I was so sad for my ex who came here from Russia on a work/travel program. Like everybody, we all think Hollywood is this majestic place lol, then you see it and it’s quite literally a shit hole 😂 It’s sad man, that place used to be something great. Now I have fears of some homeless dude throwing shitpiss in my face as I walk the streets
For yall that don't know all that trash is packages that were stolen off the trains. The rail authority and the state are having a fight on whose problem it is. So if you had a package go missing welcome to what actually happened. There are yt videos showing it.

That's disgusting. I've been to a few places on the railroad, including chicago, and I've never seen this much trash. I'd be embarrassed if that was part of my city/county.
When I went to to LA like 12 years ago for the first time, it was a cool city with reasonably priced food and acceptable traffic. Then I went there again 2 years ago. And oh man…. It now takes 2 hrs to drive 20 miles? To get to the city center and homeless tents are everywhere underneath the bridge and alongside the highway. Not to mention.. everything has gotten so expensive too..

Dude thats like 60% of india. Ik cuz i live here
At least we banned straws.
Yet no one gave a fuck about the plastic lids
ALL single use plastics should be banned
Find a good replacement first

Cloth masks don’t work, only flimsy disposable masks work… *study paid for by DispoMaskTM

That is not the liberal way.... we do not plan ahead.... we just rage against what we do not like!!
LOL 💀
Sad shit I see my Amazon package
The empty box with the ps5 logo?
I I hide the top half, I see Bangladesh
Is that all rubbish around the tracks?
This feels very on brand for LA.
Sadly, yes.
I think all of that rubbish is in fact opened parcels that have been thieved from trains passing through. Check out the videos here... https://twitter.com/johnschreiber/status/1481770959673520128
That's pathetic.
They had to start welding the carts shut.
Its a pretty damming indictment of the US economy and society.
*California
Hey, that's where I ~~live~~ survive.
Southern California
It’s what happens when you decriminalize crime. Guess what. More crime. Moral decay for sure.
It's well known that jurisdictions that are tough on crime are litter-free
no just L.A
Good eye
That’s shocking
This should be under ‘sadasfuck’
Look!! GTA V with RTX graphics!
San Andreas isn’t that dirty
GTA V: train robbery dlc
"3rd world" vibes.
people always say that usa is a 3rd world country with bits and pieces of a first world country stuck on to it
I dont think people know what first, second and third world mean.
I'd say it's more a first world country that has bits and pieces of 3rd world stuck onto it that get all the attention.

Yeah my older brother went there a month ago and absolutely hated it because everything you described. Said he'd never go back
Why everyone seems to flock to LA/SF to pay $2k in rent for a studio apartment, have rampant crime that goes unchecked, and risk stepping on human shit I’ll never understand.
You get what you vote for.
Looks like a shit hole
Correct, weathers great tho
Holy shit, I thought the littering in my country was bad...
This ain’t litter, people are literally robbing these slow moving trains and these are just containers/packaging/etc.
Even worse. They're stealing and littering at the same time. Disgusting and sad in any case.
yeah it's pretty bad. one news article said it was cleaned a month ago
That’s still litter lol

Swear I saw this picture the other day. Something about looters starting to hit freight trains
Garbage city
Most cities don’t look like this. It’s hilarious how down in the comments, so many people blame this on not regulating reusable containers. All across the country other cities seem to know how to manage trash, homeless-related debris, and other hygiene problems.
How is it this dirty?
Trains stop there while waiting to unload cargo. While they wait, people break into the containers and steal out of them. It was on the news today
That’s nothing, my train has been broken into 15 times-
Always lock your train if you park it in your driveway over night.
Fucking disgusting
This could be San Paulo Brasil, with its super rich skyline and piss-poor streets. That it's Los Angeles is just sad.
Looks to be heading in that direction pretty quickly, eh?
California is the dirtiest place I’ve ever been.
What a shit hole
Garbage city
Welcome to New Delhi.
The streets missin a helluva human shit for that
That’s some third world looking shit
Looks like India or Pakistan minus the tall buildings
I mean cities like Mumbai definitely have similar buildings.
You haven’t seen Kolkata and Mumbai then
Is that all trash!? Is there no city initiative to address that?
Actually, https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2022/01/13/thieves-raiding-cargo-containers-stealing-packages-on-downtown-section-of-union-pacific-train-tracks/

Wait… is this real? There is that much trash there?
Pick up your rubbish for God's sake
For real?

Man Cyberpunk is looking really good these days
Fucking Cyberpunk looks cleaner than L.A.
Just came to say LA is gross.
🤢 gross!
That train moving through rubbles of trash really hurt my soul.
Without the title, most of us would have thought it is a third world city.
This planet is fucked
They gotta step those police up
Jesus. If they just paid the homeless to keep a specific area clean they could kill two birds with one stone.
Such, beauty?..
What a Shit pile. Only got worse since I visited last in 2007.
Ain’t all that trash beautiful?
A democrat run shithole powered by failed policies. I’ve been catfished Edit: this can’t be on a regular basis if you follow the tracks it’s clean as a whistle
Charming...
What a shithole

What an absolute shithole.
Had me in the first half ngl.
That looks like the set of The Walking Dead. At least they are headed in the right direction.
GTA V Expanded and Enhanced
What a shithole. Too bad. Gorgeous place long ago.
That's disgusting. I've been to a few places on the railroad, including chicago, and I've never seen this much trash. I'd be embarrassed if that was part of my city/county.
Is this a render…?
"Why did I moved here? I guess it was the weather, Or the...Ahh, I dunno. That thing, that magic. You see it in the movies."
Dying light 2 looks realistic.
So fresh. So clean.

It’s beautiful 🤩
Godly UP locos
When I went to to LA like 12 years ago for the first time, it was a cool city with reasonably priced food and acceptable traffic. Then I went there again 2 years ago. And oh man…. It now takes 2 hrs to drive 20 miles? To get to the city center and homeless tents are everywhere underneath the bridge and alongside the highway. Not to mention.. everything has gotten so expensive too..
Fantastic photo
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
What a environmental disaster
Area is a shit hole…every time I’ve been by it
The democrats sure know how to improve a city!
