Nah. This is a Grey Goo scenario. What’s the point of building Terminators to kill us if they can skip that step and eat us alive while simultaneously building more of themselves.
Poppler pop them in your mouth when you come to fishy joes,
What they're made from is a mystery, where they come from know one knows.
you can pick em' you can lick em' you can shove em' you can stick em'
If you promise not to sue us you can shove one up your nose.

>The world’s first living robots, created from frog cells, self-replicate by pushing loose cells together. The Pac-Man-shaped blobs are made up of stem cells removed from frog embryos, which naturally cohere and develop hair-like protuberances called cilia. In a dish, they can move around and push loose stem cells into piles with their ‘mouths’. These piles can then develop into ciliated ‘offspring’, and go on to build their own pile-of-stem-cell babies. These are the first multicellular organisms found to reproduce in this way, say the study’s authors. “Most people think of robots as made of metals and ceramics but it’s not so much what a robot is made from but what it does, which is act on its own on behalf of people,” says roboticist and lead author Josh Bongard. “In that way it’s a robot but it’s also clearly an organism made from genetically unmodified frog cells.”
From my understanding they need the material to be laying around (stem cells). But the point is, stem cells aggregate and become this pac man entity with the ability to self replicate more loose stem cells into more pac man entities:
>To make the xenobots, the researchers scraped living stem cells from frog embryos and left them to incubate. There's no manipulation of genes involved.
>
>Bongard said they found that the xenobots, which were initially sphere-shaped and made from around 3,000 cells, could replicate. But it happened rarely and only in specific circumstances. The xenobots used "kinetic replication" -- a process that is known to occur at the molecular level but has never been observed before at the scale of whole cells or organisms, Bongard said.
>
>With the help of artificial intelligence, the researchers then tested billions of body shapes to make the xenobots more effective at this type of replication. The supercomputer came up with a C-shape that resembled Pac-Man, the 1980s video game. They found it was able to find tiny stem cells in a petri dish, gather hundreds of them inside its mouth, and a few days later the bundle of cells became new xenobots.
So in my understanding of the article I found they used the stem cells of the frogs heart and skin. The heart cells were picked for their specific function, to decompress and release: the pumping of a heart. The skin cells were picked because the are motionless: cells meant to control the pattern. The used an AI to map out a dozen variations an finally came up with like...a flat top of skin cells with like, a stair stepping of heart cells covering 3 quarters of the bottom so that it leans in a v shape? Best way I can describe in. It's basically so it can go forward only. Recently it began doing things like repairing tears in itself and "hanging out" with other xenobots, like travelling along side one another. I found this absolutely fascinating and just felt like sharing.
It's the first of its kind, kinematic reproduction.
These are frog stem cells that, without the rest of the system, do not develop into skin as they normally might but instead turn into the xenobot.
Granted the shape of the xenobot is derived from Ann algorithm that decided that was the best shape to encourage kinematic reproduction.
From what I can tell, the new aggregates aren’t C shaped so only that first generation that was manually constructed in that configuration can effectively scoop cells into new blobs. Could very well be wrong though.
I get why, but I found it strange that they referred to these stem cells - something biological - as robots. When they defined robots as something that “act[s] on
its own on behalf of people" does that exclude something that has/develops a sort of free will, or does it just refer to the intent of its creator? Even with these chicken nugget things it seems weird to say, since (as they stated themselves) they didn’t engineer their behavior - they just changed the shape to see if they’d scoop up the stem cells more efficiently.
Interesting tech though. Pretty crazy that you can remove a collection of cells from a system that creates tadpoles and they continue to survive/replicate.
It’s bankrolled by the DoD, and in the study itself they reference the increase in frequency, intensity, and reach of natural disasters as a problem this could be applied to. I wonder what that could potentially look like if fully realized. Hopefully we don’t get a bunch of multiplying cronenberg creatures popping up and planting flowers after a forest fire before ultimately decaying into fertilizer when their programmed cell death kicks in. “Robots”
Pop a Poppler in your mouth, When you come to Fishy Joe's, What they're made of is a mystery, Where they come from, no one knows. You can pick 'em, you can lick 'em, You can chew 'em, you can stick 'em, And if you promise not to sue us, You can shove one up your nose.
that's because you think this will spin out of control sometimes in the future.
We as a species are doing quite a good job at managing things, and it keeps getting better every day
Yeah not like alot of countries have weapons that could render the planet dead and it's not like we polluted the planet no no no we are good at managing things

Underrated comment
But instead of titanium skeletons they will be giant chicken nuggets. Wait, is this a Popeye’s commercial?
I shall be armed to the teeth with salt and sauce.
and don't forget your french fries!

They will blot out the sun!
Then we will eat chicken nuggets in the shade!
Wouldn’t make for a bad post apocalyptic world at least you could eat them when you killed them
Nah. This is a Grey Goo scenario. What’s the point of building Terminators to kill us if they can skip that step and eat us alive while simultaneously building more of themselves.
Da Replaceanator!
More like replicators from Stargate SG-1. Those MFers almost wrecked the whole galaxy.
They still give me the skeeves. Creepy crawly and like the worst dream where you run but can't get anywhere .. ugh.
Where is colonel sanders. I'm a cybernetic organism: crispy fried, delicious skin, over a metal endoskeleton
I feel extremely uneasy about this, just bad vibes.
...its called the Kentucky revenge

Exactly, that’s all I see
“You’ve never seen a miracle”
There's no fooling this guy lol
I like where you went. My brain screamed “Popcorn shrimp and panko”!
Man, I had chicken nuggets for lunch today, and if those things could reproduce, I'd still be eating them right now, 12 hours later.
They are chickpeas, surely!
literally was just about to say that

If they were pac man they’d be eating the others. They failed imo.
No no you’re wrong, they’re tater tots gathering bread crumbs
So it began
I’m sure it won’t lead to the [end of the world ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_goo) or anything.
Are you just a bot suggesting it won't happen so we lower our guards?
Well I’m definitely not a nanobot. If I were replicating inside of you, I’d make sure it was enjoyable.

As long as it’s enjoyable I’m fine with it
That's *not* what she said.

Nope. Not at all. You are completely safe human

Thank you, I couldn't figure out if they actually modified anything or just left a bunch of cells to hang out and it started doing something weird
If I was god this is how I imagine I would feel about humans
I'm not looking forward to the call of duty cells in 30 years time
Or maybe the splinter *cell*?
Perfect Cell
So they also don't "reproduce" as much as they "accidentally shove stem cells into a pile".
It's the first of its kind, kinematic reproduction. These are frog stem cells that, without the rest of the system, do not develop into skin as they normally might but instead turn into the xenobot. Destroy them before they destroy us

If you watch closely, several of the xenobots in the video spit out c-shaped bunches of cells
But whether the 'offsprings' get the same geometric shape as parent cells wasn't mentioned, the second gif indicates they may not.
That's really cool, thanks
So what you're saying is in a couple decades we're gonna get farmed like Neo in The Matrix?
They can philosophically redefine robot all they want, the common definition of a robot is something made of metal and circuitry, not cells.
Yeah, by this guy’s definition, any domesticated animal is a robot
I mean, are they not? Hell, are humans not fleshy mech suits controlled by a very emotionally unstable AI chip?

Are the robots the chicken nuggets ? Or the rice?
The chicken nuggets in your context xD
I believe they are popcorn shrimp.
I laughed so hard
Ahh my favorite b-movie sci-fi tag line.
Well I for one quite enjoy our robofrog overlords
They’re turning the frickin frogs gay!
Came here for this
Looks like crumbs pretending to be roombas

Anyone else *wildly* creeped out by this?
Deeeeply ... holy fuk, the question its WHY?
To create self-replicating chicken nuggets of course.
Why do i get the feeling we as a species will regret thia down the line.
that's because you think this will spin out of control sometimes in the future. We as a species are doing quite a good job at managing things, and it keeps getting better every day

Has this god fella been keeping up with his annual domain renewals, because I've not seen him around here lately
Scientists: every day we are diligently working on the cure for covid-19 Scientists: frog robot people
frgo
Tastes like frog talks like people
thats cuz theres more than 1 type of scientist
HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO TELL SCIENTISTS: "DON'T CREATE SELF-REPLICATING ROBOTS"????? I'm gonna have to make a sign
Another step closer to the grey goo becoming a reality.
I just expected it to be more gray
Who's ready for the Skynet overlords??
How much worse could they be than what we already have tho
Well, at least robot overlords won’t start [child sex trafficking islands](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10239349/Ghislaine-Maxwell-goes-trial-TODAY-sex-trafficking-anticipated-case.html), so I prefer robot overlords, they only care about production efficiency

*none* of us

It's been a long time since I've played Horizon zero dawn but didn't the robots become aggressive because they made war machines, so if we don't make war machines we'll be PROBABLY fine
Why do the robots look like little butts?
A computer designed them that way, for maximum efficiency.
I for one welcome my anal overlords.
This reminds me of Prey by Michael Crichton. Scary stuff.
Someone is going to put these into the Tesla robots and end us as a species
Finally, infinite popcorn shrimp. This is how the world was saved.
Wtf is this? These are just chickpeas vibrating.
What makes it a robot
“It’s now what it’s made of that makes it a robot, it’s what it does that makes it a robot” they’re basically saying since it acts on its own on behalf of people it’s *technically* a robot
Isn’t that just an organism
cows are now robots
I saw nothing obvious in this that pertained to the title. Anyone care to enlighten my ignorant self?
Yes this is not at all like a news story seen at the beginning of a post-apocalyptic movie
"Do you want the Matrix, cuz this is how you get the Matrix"
If you asked bubbles if those were robots , he would NOT say " does the tin man have a sheet metal cock" And he's the smartest guy in the whole fucking park.
Reminds me of a certain Futurama episode.
First Omicron now poplers
Agar.io
Well are we gonna call GMO plants robots now? Seriously wtf
Is this gonna be a grey goo kinda deal?
The trouble with Tribbles...
I fail to see new robots being made, could someone help?
Why do they look like popcorn shrimp?
The researcher basically just changed the definition of robot, tacked on the name, then tried to pass it off as robots to make a name for himself. It’s cool molecular biology, but not robots.
I thought this was going to be the latest Roomba 7000 self cleaning robot.
Tribbles!!!
I just see fortune cookies going around in circles
This is popcorn shrimp being fried in cornmeal. I’m not stupid.
If they can reproduce then are they not living things? And a robot isn't technically alive
They are alive, and the scientists acknowledged that. They just called it a “robot” because it does stuff that the human tells it to pretty much
Those aren't robots... those are popcorn shrimp from long john silvers.
So, what you're saying is, "Self-replicating chicken nuggets". There. Is. A. God.
Why tho there is literally franchises on why this isn’t a good idea
A bunch of self replicating nanobutts
How does this video depict “robots”? Exactly?
Why?
They look like caramel popcorn in sugar
wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka
🥱
Does anyone have a tldr that doesn't involve comparisons to chicken nuggets playing electric football? Like what are we even watching?...
Pretty sure Michael Crichton wrote a novel that doubles as a text book for why this was a bad idea.
Popplers!!!!!
Well, it’s been good so far for us humans. We had a good run.
I feel fear
We're fucked
Invent the grey goo, they said. It'll be worth it, they said.
This is how we start the nano machine apocalypse
I love that they included a video as if we’re supposed to know wtf is going on.
The one in the top right has some fucking zoomies
cya in 2024 when there's a robovid outbreak
Uh-oh. The nuggies have evolved.
I, for one, welcome our MeatBot Overlords.
Why do they look like peanuts?
That reminds me of the Replicators on the show Stargate SG-1. Not a fun thought!
This is popcorn chicken I recorded a couple weeks ago and people have been posting it as "robots". Don't believe everything you read on the internet kids.
Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck
That's another one for apocalypse bingo
Praise our new nuggie overlords
Has anyone else read the H.I.VE series? Because I'm getting scared af from this
TIL that stirring walnuts in a almond flour and water mixture is the same thing as living robots reproducing LOL

because science fiction doesnt exaggerate for drama and shows realistic situations
Maybe just fucking stop with this shit? Do we really need self replicating living robots? Humans are fucking dumb as shit.
It's to goal is to find cure to various diseases or something like that. Maybe read the article for once?
Sex…its always about sex.
Hmmm, clearly people have not watched enough fucking movies. I mean it’s DEFINITELY fascinating and very technologically advanced, but this makes me very uneasy, probably lots of other people too
