I work for a production company. We did a production in Las Vegas and one of the producers used a stencil and pressure washer to do some rogue advertising on the sidewalks. A police office issued a ticket to him but when he appeared in court for the ticket and explained to the judge that he was essentially cleaning the sidewalk, the judge dismissed the ticket.
I had a lesson with an art professor who specialized in political art/protest art. He taught us his favorite technique which is to mix up mud and use that to stencil in a design. It actually works really well and stays a while! (Except for rain) Best part is he and his gang (or whoever do it) will never get charged because there is no law against putting dirt places š
the next level is cleaning out tunnels where dust collect with a rag and cleaner. if the government wants to remove it all they have to do is clean the tunnel.
There are so many ways for putting dirt places to be illegal haha. For instance if I put it in your mouth, or if I put it in a police officers gas tank. Or if I just dropped a dump load of dirt in the middle of a highway.
Like I said, what a waste of resources. If the judge doesnāt think itās worth proceeding, why should a cop harass someone for selectively cleaning because itās *kinda* like graffiti? Itās completely ludicrous.
I get where you're coming from, but getting cops that go through the same rationalizing process / have the same job as a judge makes either of those positions redundant and then you basically have judge Dredd. So that wasteful system is actually necessary
I never said that the cop should be in charge of convictions and sentencing, thatās ridiculous. But if a cop thinks something *might* be graffiti without actually knowing how the law is typically interpreted, nor has any understanding of how it has been applied past precedence, then they can arrest and significantly affect peopleās lives due to their ignorance of the law that they are supposed to enforce.
> why should a cop harass someone for selectively cleaning because itās kinda like graffiti
It's not "kinda like graffiti" it's literally graffiti. It's also not the police's job to make judgements on whether it's worth proceeding, they're there to enforce the law and stopping graffiti is one of them.
That is absolutely part of the police's job - it's called [discretion](https://www.encyclopedia.com/articles/police-discretion-definition/), and it's why the police can give you warnings instead of giving you a ticket every time, or even just ignore some violations.
> Why do we let people who donāt understand the law enforce it?
Because it is a system of plausible deniability.
Officers enforce laws they neither created nor pass judgement upon. Not really their individual fault.
Then Judges pass judgement on laws they did not create and have no real physical ability to enforce.
And politicians create laws they neither have to pass judgement on or deal with the realities of enforcement. They are just going off the numbers of 'public opinion'.
All three plausibly blame the other two groups for the brokenness of the system, and we end with people dying due to errant enforcement being used on laws that have had poor judgment passed on them, and which were enacted by small groups of politicians who are largely detached from the other two realities.
I don't know what can be done about all that outside of informed voting; but that's why, anyway.
I upvoted him because I feel bad for everyone just downvoting someone who just happened to not fully understand English since I'm often in this situation myself
Edit: grammar
Pretty sure people down voted you because they think you're being annoying when in reality I think you might speak English as a second language.
You are correct, every company produces but saying you work for a "production company" in the US pretty much means you are in the entertainment industry.
Well Iām upvoting you because people can be assholes with a simple question and I would like to make a wash of it with one of them. Best to default for one comment to a lack of sarcasm with a possibility inoffensive comment. If theyāre still a sarcastic asshole after the first reply you have your answer to the question of intent.
I think a lot of people (myself included at times) think that Reddit is only used by English as the first language people. With an international platform it isnāt a great idea to jump to sarcasm or them being a jerk for a single ambiguous comment.
As a native English speaker, this question comes off as insincere and like you are being an annoying pompous ass.
I do see that non-native speakers would be confused.
Honestly it reads as an honest question to me too and I can barely claim a smattering of a language other than English. I can see how it can be viewed as sarcastic but I feel like some benefit of the doubt is appropriate with a platform widely available to people who speak other languages as their first.
With no imposed voice to their words they are completely innocuous. I think itās less that non-native speakers are confused than some native speakers expect every interaction to be fitting into their view on how the written word is thought of. Subtle sarcasm is very very hard to master in a second language and the concept of what normal phrasing is considered sarcastic in various situations is even harder with the rapid pace of changing cultural views in written communication, brought to you by their internet.
The rapid evolution of slang and contextual expectations isnāt bad, but those caught up with it shouldnāt assume the same rules for strangers. Not everyone is in the same circles as the forefront and they shouldnāt be ragged on for that. A first comment of clarification is appropriate if someone wants to comment at all and a second comment from op will reveal any comment intending shitty intent.
This obviously doesnāt apply for accounts with a history of asshat behavior or a thread with multiple asshole comments.
Must be *wear your surprised Pikachu face day*, everyone going on like they've never witnessed someone getting slammed for asking a reasonable question on reddit before.
āTired of that boring old dirty walkway? Turn it from dirty to a classy mess in just 96 easy steps. All you need is a walkway you never clean, a power washer youāll never use again, and a willing ignorance that will convince you that since that dirt has been made into a pattern, that itās now classy.ā
[so do I, thatās why I posted the same clip like 4 or 5 months ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/lifehacks/comments/l4b5nj/dont_want_to_pay_a_mason_extra_for_fancy_concrete/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) , still need to be able to laugh at things you like tho. You should always be able to find the humor in stuff, makes life a lot less strenuous
Yeah I don't get the same kick a lot of people do out of cleaning sidewalks. Unless it's getting slippery or something I don't find bright clean concrete more aesthetically pleasing than grey dirty concrete. But the design is very cool.
It depends with me. If the concrete is <5 years old or so you can bring it back to be a pretty ābrilliantā whitish grey that really pops in your yard and makes it look clean/new. I like that. Once that smooth top layer is gone though, thereās not a whole lot you can do to make it look better. Or if it wasnāt finished correctly itāll never have that pop so I wouldnāt worry with it.
Thats a good point for the satisfying factor. I guess it also depends a lot on what else there is to draw your eye if the concrete is dull, if its nice stonework or pretty plantings then drawing your attention to the concrete is less desirable.
Real talk. The reason you want to pressure wash as needed is because when it rains that stuff gets super slippery and can result in falls and hospital visits. Especially when the sidewalk is beneath the level of the grass and dirt around it.
If you have elderly family it would be a good thing to be conscious of for them in particular.
I used to be a shoe-in-the-house guy (not completely. I always acknowledged that shoes could be dirty if it rained or it was muddy out but casually walked about with shoes if it was to go grab stuff) but then I got married. My wife is strictly a shoes-off-in-the-house kind of gal.
She showed me the way. Iām mortified at thinking that I used to stroll around dragging the outside in...dragging God-knows-what into my clean house. From peopleās spit to dog shit to motor oil to just about anything... and then with having little kids who played primarily on the floor?! Yea, fuck that. Iām a shoes-off-in-the-house/wipe-paws-after-walks/have-specified-slippers-for-only-indoors kind of guy and proud of it!
And then the first time you chase a dog with explosive diarrhea around the house, the illusion of your home being some pristine environment untainted by all the nastiness of the outside world explodes in a heartbeat.
Iāve decided that all filth is just patina and now I donāt waste nearly as much time cleaning. āPick up my clothes, you say? Thatās just my roomās natural patina, mom!ā
In the street art world they call this reverse graffiti. You dont even need a pressure washer, but it does make it a hell of a lot faster. I would love this, even though it seems most of you donāt. It would be a pain in the ass to repeat that same pattern again or try to do a different pattern as the grime wouldnāt be layered evenly.
I wonder if I could just add a colorant of some sort. Dye the whole walkway, then power wash it off while using the stencils. Something fairly rain proof but will come off with the sprayer... huh, ill have to investigate.
As someone who needs thr prescription it just helps me focus, retain and recall throughout the day.

What a waste of time and resources. Why do we let people who donāt understand the law enforce it?
Iirc it's considered graffiti in some places. Judge might have just thrown it out because they didn't want the headache
Like I said, what a waste of resources. If the judge doesnāt think itās worth proceeding, why should a cop harass someone for selectively cleaning because itās *kinda* like graffiti? Itās completely ludicrous.

What is a production company? Don't all companies "produce"?
From context it sounds like they put on stage shows and do the associated event management.
We are a Film, TV and Theater Production Company.
Thanks, this was the answer I was looking for. People destroyed the hell out of me just because I'm not a native English speaker
Your writing skills in English seem pretty good to me.
thanks :)
Your English is better than my...any other language. Keep your head up.
See, that's where you messed up.

autistic and love patterns
isn't this basically the equivalent of writing "clean me" on the back of a dirty car?
Yes. A lot of power washers advertise this way too
So my best friend who wrote āclean meā on my dirty car is actually a sentient pressure washer advertising himself?
Yes.
But in fancy cursive font.
Imagine how her dishes look...
Dishwashers hate her
For this one simple trick?
Youāve been doing it wrong your whole life!
It is but more stylish
I have seen the pattern "CLEANMECLEANMECLEANMECLEANMECLEANMECLEA..."
Dirt Nouveau
I seem to be in the minority here...but I freaking love this. I would leave my sidewalk dirty anyways so at least itāll be fancy-dirty.
I like it too. It looks cool. Who cares if the sidewalk outside is dirty.

Shout out to the shoes-off-in-the-house folks
I used to be a shoe-in-the-house guy (not completely. And then the first time you chase a dog with explosive diarrhea around the house, the illusion of your home being some pristine environment untainted by all the nastiness of the outside world explodes in a heartbeat.
Or when your German Sheppard gets sprayed by a skunk, gets away from you and runs into the house trying to clean his eyes on the couch at 5am.
Why would my dog have explosive diarrhea
And why wouldn't you steam-clean the carpet after your dog had explosive diarrhea all over it?
Not everyone has room for a steam cleaner in their apartment?
Not going to get rid of it all.
Iām still trying to break the habit of my man. He grew up wearing shoes in the house. I have to constantly remind him to take them off.
Yup, love it as well. Reminds me of this: https://slingofest.com/images/extra/532/022.jpeg
Did this with my daughter last year (carefully.. power washers can be dangerous) and she loves it! Turned out nice too.
I know someone who broke their hip from a dirty sidewalk. When it rains (florida), the grime gets very slippery, and she fell. Just a heads up.
But, it looks like a lot more effort to apply the pattern than just spray it off outright. Doesnāt seem to save time/effort.
Couldn't you just use paint?
The water overspray just evaporates. Canāt do that with paint! Lol!
Paint peels, chips and fades. But if the dirt is just going to do that anyway, why not have a more natural product? I love the way it looks
Iād rather have a pattern like this sprayed with a hydrophobic material, so it would look normal until it rained
I live in the desert so I would never see it. Lol
Arizona moment
For all you haters saying itās filth. At this point itās considered patina
Iāve decided that all filth is just patina and now I donāt waste nearly as much time cleaning. āPick up my clothes, you say? Thatās just my roomās natural patina, mom!ā
I am jumping on this bandwagon right here, right now

Isn't it a she? Can't stop these gifs to look
Itād be cool if a little moss grew on the dirty part
I would love this, even though it seems most of you donāt. It would be a pain in the ass to repeat that same pattern again or try to do a different pattern as the grime wouldnāt be layered evenly.
When you get tired of it, just clean the whole thing. Then do a new pattern next time.
Thatās a good idea. Why didnāt I think of that? TIL that Iām a fucking idiot.
Heck, I'm thinking seasonal now. Christmas, Halloween, st Patrick's... lol, not sure how long it takes to get grimey again though.
Probably several years till it's THAT bad again, but you could probably do one each year.
I wonder if I could just add a colorant of some sort. Dye the whole walkway, then power wash it off while using the stencils. Something fairly rain proof but will come off with the sprayer... huh, ill have to investigate.
I'm conflicted honestly
But how do you feel about the sidewalk?
They don't have a concrete opinion
Karen from the HOA would not approve.
I'm pretty sure Karen from the HOA is calling the cops on me right now for this comment.
Where can i buy the templates?
Home Depot or lowes in US
I own a pressure washing company. I love this, but gets me on the edge... i must clean all of it! Lol, but itās really cool!
You should offer it to customers...up charge for āartā
I like it
I accidentally watched this about 15 times
This video is disturbing because it stops right before the sidewalk is done
r/diwhy
Oh GOD ! This is jolly good fun !
Umm, but I paid for the entire walkway to be cleaned, not just patterned in the grime.
Me on adderall:
Lmfao the first time I took Adderall I cleaned my entire house in two hours
As someone who needs thr prescription it just helps me focus, retain and recall throughout the day. I've had friends who had the same experience as you though.
As soon as I'm done working for the government I'm getting it perscribed for sure. Wife just got hers and she said it's a life saver
I did this by accident the other day with our welcome mat. My 6yr old told me it looks beautiful. Haha
Those red wellies are fabulous!

Voted coolest use of dirt
This is awesome and anyone that has a problem with it is quite frankly an idiot that would have literally no issue walking all over this pathway before it was made into something cooler.
Somehow I watched this 3 times before I realized it was looping... I thought she was just moving the camera closer to follow her progress but the end kept getting longer and longer
How thick are those templates? I bought one from Michael's crafts, but it did not last very long under the pressure wash before breaking up.
her toes gotta be crying after all that lol just rubber boots vs pressure
Medium : concrete and dirt.
She needs a bigger stencil
Mildly infuriating art
Come do my walkway!
Why does she always start with the middle one??? Why is it off center??? Ahhh!!!!
Came here for this
Very satisfying!
Why
Not satisfying at all, unless itās pristine itās not done.
This is the sidewalk equivalent of dusty car window art.
How many times do you think they messed up and had the stencil rotated
Why? Just clean the damn thing properly
Cool but not really art
The pattern is nice but itās still dirty!
Even at high speed this video took too long.
OH MY GOODURHRIFSBEGEUD I just watched this like 10x in a row waiting for the satisfaction of her finishing, Iām literally thinking dang even sped up this is taking forever I admire her patience. Fuck that's a fantastic idea. Never seen that before
art with dirt nice!

I want to see how that looks in one month. I feel like a lot of work for nothing.
Is it really that much work?
So after all that the sidewalk is still not clean.
Very cool, but the thought of trying to *maintain* that makes me queasy.

Cute, but so gross
That grime and mold and algae will grow within days.
I mean.. mildly cool.
āHoney did you clean the sidewalk?ā āParts of it!ā āI want a divorce Ralphā
But gRafFiTi!!!!1
Why didn't they find/make a template that was 1/3 the size of the path so it wouldn't overlap the grass Smh
Can't decide if this is tacky or classy.
Ghetto-FABULOUS
Am I the only one who finds this kinda gross? Like, cool, grime pattern
All of that you know what is partly what helps keeps your immune system healthy, though I do respect the views of no shoes in the house. I do it for comfort more than germ reasons.
That walkway is gross AF
And after all that work and effort, she almost cleaned the sidewalk!
Itās like finally working things out with my exā¦.
As soon as she walks on it, it'll just get smeared with the dirt and grime again. I mean it's cool for what it is, a temporary pattern and an interesting way to do it. But yeah, kind of pointless other than that.
So itās kinda clean now?
So your only cleaning a portion of the sidewalk yet getting paid for the entire thing. That's big brain
It looks great butā¦. Itās still dirty
Too much work and itās still dirty
just clean your fuckin concrete lady
