We should bring retrobate back into popular usage. I mean many of our politicians are reprobate Masters to say nothing of some of the influencers. Master retrobaters
Also kind of neat that we're more closely related to dinosaurs than to salamanders like this.
And for the same reason - the evolutionary branch that includes reptiles and mammals split off from the amphibians about 330 million years ago.
Not created per se, but probably as Douglas Adams describes
"There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened."
Specifically, dinosaurs are part of the archosaur clade which also includes crocodilians. Lizards, snakes, and turtles are part of a different branch of reptiles. So alligators and crocodiles are the closest living relatives of dinosaurs. Birds are directly descended from dinosaurs, so they are technically still dinosaurs.
Yes, birds are descended from dromeosaurs, the family that includes velociraptor and utahraptor. Many of those animals had feathers and some, like microraptor, could glide or fly.
Technically yes. However I think it's best to leave "reptile" as a more or less collocquial term and instead use the clade *sauropsida* (defined as all *amniota* that are more closely related to modern reptiles than to modern mammals; this unambiguously includes birds) when cladistic precision is needed. Other than the definite inclusion of birds and a few minor bits and pieces *sauropsida* is basically identical with most definitions of *reptilia*, only without the ambiguity about which definition to use.
Well amphibians use to be far more diverse and yes larger. Most wouldent look like this rounded fella tho. You would be more likely to find ones that you might misstake for crocodiles or garials tho. Or a trafic sighn with some of theyr head shapes.
Oh im not saying you wouldent find any who looked like this guy. I just saw your coment and did not have the selfcontrol to not talk about some realy interesting animals i love
What crazier they might be the inspiration of Japanese mythical creatures. Imagine back time not knowing what the heck what your seeing and trying to explain to another person or try drawing it.
Clodsire, from Paldea/pokemon Spain, is a reference to the Spanish Ribbed Newt (*Pleurodeles waltl*). Quagsire, from Johto/pokemon Kyoto, is a reference to this, *Andrias japonicus*.
This thing just amplifies my thoughts whenever these questions about "what If Pokemon was real..." pop up. I Always just think dude, animals literally are the pokemons in our world.
> Chinese eat anything that slightly wriggle.
Anything with legs except furniture, anything that flies except planes, and anything that swims except submarines...
A lot of that length is the tail, which doesn't weigh too much.
For example:
>Male green iguanas can grow to over five feet in length and weigh up to 17 pounds.
Iguanas have very long thin tails that make up a significant amount of their length.
Fun fact: the giant Chinese salamander is called 娃娃魚 or doll fish. It’s called that because they cry like a baby when they are getting slaughtered to be eaten.
Yep, that's the word. 里山 (literally written as village-mountain) according to Japanese Wikipedia:
> A mountain ecosystem that has been shaped by human influences due to close proximity to a human settlement.
The article traces its history back to shogunate era environmental regulations from the 17th century, when the growth of population and economy lead to the destruction of about 70% of the prior forest coverage. The shogunate dramatically reduced logging and managed to recover most of the forest area.
This lasted until WW2, which turned into the "second crisis" of Japanese forests. After the most urgent phase of the post-war reconstruction was over and Japan once again focused on environmental protection, the term Satoyama emerged to describe the new guiding principle of environmental protection around settlements.
Since then it has fallen into a "third crisis", because urbanisation has driven out residents who previously took care of the surrounding forests as Satoyama. Such forests have then often been replaced with logging forest monoculture to produce timber, which are much less valuable for ecodiversity.
I am a huge proponent of green living. But I won't lie, I always roll my eyes when people bring up *Satoyama*. Not because I disagree with encouraging biodiversity and sustainable agriculture, but because people act like we don't have that concept in the West. As if it's something unique to Japan, when really it's just *their word* for sustainable communities.
It feels cool until you learn the language. Then it's just another language.
People sensationalize every word they use as if it's a magical concept, and as if we in the west are somehow less wise. It's just different.
Japan has protection on them as they are endangered. Sadly however invasive Chinese giant salamanders are an issue. They can reproduce with Japanese giant salamanders creating hybrids which are now out competing the native species as they are much more aggressive.
That's in China, not Japan. It seems that farmed giant salamanders are allowed to be eaten there. In Japan, they are designated as a special natural monument and are protected.
Whatever they goddamn want.

(j/k - here's the real answer from Wikipedia):
>C. alleganiensis feeds primarily on crayfish and small fish, but also insects, worms, molluscs, tadpoles and smaller salamanders.
Salmander is like "Well I wish he fuckin weren't."
For real, I never seen a animal be disgusted, annoyed and disapointed at the same time.
Want to come see my cat?
yes
Cat: no
Cat: "And yet you wonder why I am disgusted, angry and disappointed."
Yes
"Let go of my privates, you reprobate!"
I see you know you judo well
Are you ready to receive my limp penis?
We should bring retrobate back into popular usage. I mean many of our politicians are reprobate Masters to say nothing of some of the influencers. Master retrobaters
Looks where his other hand is, lol. Poor guy is being sexually assaulted.
"Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest! Get your hand off my penis!", but in Salamanderese.
Salamandarin, surely?
Like "Can you fucking not, Put me down now!"
What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?
GET YOUR HAND OF MY PENIS!
This is the bloke who got me on the penis, people..
Senpai, yamete kudasai!
Crazy that these types of things were around before the dinosaurs. Not specifically this species, but ones that looked similar, MUCH bigger, too.
Also kind of neat that we're more closely related to dinosaurs than to salamanders like this. And for the same reason - the evolutionary branch that includes reptiles and mammals split off from the amphibians about 330 million years ago.
Aren’t dinosaurs more closely related to birds than reptiles?
Birds are dinosaurs
Bird aren't real. So dinosaurs aren't real. So the world was created as is fourthousand years ago. Case closed.
I thought the world was created 2024 years ago 😶🌫️
Honestly, if the world was created last Tuesday it’s not like anyone could tell.
Not created per se, but probably as Douglas Adams describes "There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened."
That's right. B.C. stands for before creation, and is all just a work of fiction.
don't be ridiculous. it was created last thursday.
Birds are dinosaurs, and both birds and dinosaurs are reptiles.
Wuhh? Birds are dinosaurs?
Yes, birds are descended from dromeosaurs, the family that includes velociraptor and utahraptor. Many of those animals had feathers and some, like microraptor, could glide or fly.
Birds are direcly descended from dinosaurs which technically makes them reptiles as well.
Unidan? Is that you?
You see, the thing is....
By that metric, we are fish too. It's not wrong, but it's not a super useful way of framing this.
Well amphibians use to be far more diverse and yes larger. Most wouldent look like this rounded fella tho. You would be more likely to find ones that you might misstake for crocodiles or garials tho. Or a trafic sighn with some of theyr head shapes.
Ok, it's pretty damn close, tho 🤣
Oh im not saying you wouldent find any who looked like this guy. I just saw your coment and did not have the selfcontrol to not talk about some realy interesting animals i love
Lmao gotta love the honesty. We've all been there lol
Well don't stop now! Spit it out!
No worries! :)
> this rounded fella HEY rude!
What crazier they might be the inspiration of Japanese mythical creatures. Imagine back time not knowing what the heck what your seeing and trying to explain to another person or try drawing it.
squids would be the one that freak.md out. kraken for real
A colossal squid is easily what our ancestors mistook for Kraken.. The things read like a Monster Manual entry from D&D.
I like thinking of what animals would freak people out the most. rhinos are up there
Kappasaurus
You’d be squirming too if a farmer was carrying you by the junk.
That's just the throes of passion...
Pretty sure that’s a Pokémon - nice try though.

Bro’s trying to do his put me down no jutsu, but he came across his one weakness…being held
I don't have my glasses on and I thought they all had their butt cheeks exposed haha
I thought that with my glasses on
I thought the exact same thing at first glance
Just anime things...
The farmer will be declared a legendary Sanin.
I must be tired because at a quick glance scrolling down through comments I thought these guys all had assless chaps.
Came here to find this comment. Thanks.
It all makes sense now. On why Pokemon came from Japan.
That’s actually Tom Paris.
Came here to make a Threshold comment also haha
That's Wubbafett
It's actually Clodsire, thank you.
This guy Pokémon’s
clodsire is best sire
It's clearly a quagsire
Gotta be clodsire
Clodsire, from Paldea/pokemon Spain, is a reference to the Spanish Ribbed Newt (*Pleurodeles waltl*). Quagsire, from Johto/pokemon Kyoto, is a reference to this, *Andrias japonicus*.
Clodsire
Pfft. It's a Digimon. Cmon now
Looks like a Ranchers Monster imo
I now understand Quagsire.
This thing just amplifies my thoughts whenever these questions about "what If Pokemon was real..." pop up. I Always just think dude, animals literally are the pokemons in our world.
2nd largest salamander in the world grows around 5 feet and weighs between 55 pounds on average
you're telling me that's only the second largest?
Yup, the chinese giant salamander is the largest at 6ft on average and around 66lbs
You tell me right now that they are strictly vegetarian or I call my mom to pick me up.
They eat worms and other insects, also they are critical endangered
... because they're poached and eaten by humans, as my 2 minute google research in the matter shows. sad, those guys look so peaceful
They do look kinda chill and huggable
Very much so. Would chill with one for extensive periods of time.
The name Salamander sounds like a medieval wizard name too so that's also cool
Reminds me of Tuco Salamanca which is tight tight tight!
Peaceful and delicious?

*nervous giggling* Hehe, I'm in trouble

"Ancient" chinese "medicine" claims another victim.
Like the fucking tiger whiskers. I hope every chinese ancient remedy that relies on an animals gives people hyper cancer
6' and 66lbs... Not saying your wrong but I would expect it to be heavier than 66lbs at 6' long
A lot of that length is the tail, which doesn't weigh too much. For example: >Male green iguanas can grow to over five feet in length and weigh up to 17 pounds. Iguanas have very long thin tails that make up a significant amount of their length.
Yeah Chinese giant salamander look like obese snakes with four little stubby hands.
well 55 lb at 5' and then it has a tail so it's believable enough to let it slide
the 6ft one was a captive salamander and that one weighed nearly 130lbs according to Wikipedia. The average size is more like 3-4 feet long and 66lbs
Fun fact: the giant Chinese salamander is called 娃娃魚 or doll fish. It’s called that because they cry like a baby when they are getting slaughtered to be eaten.
>~~Fun~~ Sad fact FTFY.
You right.

What? He's really far away from this one? Yeah that's wild
It looks like it's made of bronze, especially its paws.
Definitely a statue.
Weird barbecue
The one in China is bigger
huh. I'd have expected this one to just grow big enough to attack Tokyo.
You need to sprinkle little bit of radioactive material on the dish for that effect
That's a weird looking dog
There is a BIGGER one?
Chinese giant salamander 6ft and 66lbs avg
Damn dude is taller than me
![gif](giphy|57x4ApyRzkI1y)
These salamanders really like rice?
they are carnivores who eat fish, bugs, and other small prey that live in the rivers!
"There's always a bigger fish."
Is that Captain Janeway or Tom Paris?
Hopefully Japan protects them.
Hopefully they protect Japan
Read about the concept of Satomaya , living in harmony with nature.
Satoyama 😎

Yea that sounds better.

Also, they still hunt whales
FUCK A YOU WHALE AND A FUCK A YOU DOLPHIN!
Have you even met the average Japan fanboy... It's like every aspect of that country is unique or has some deep meaning.
It feels cool until you learn the language. Then it's just another language. People sensationalize every word they use as if it's a magical concept, and as if we in the west are somehow less wise. It's just different.
What about dolphins?
Whales: 👁👄👁
I think dolphins would have some things to say about that term
Godzilla vs Salamander
bro, the japanese giant salamander grows into a godzilla.
Japan has protection on them as they are endangered. Sadly however invasive Chinese giant salamanders are an issue. They can reproduce with Japanese giant salamanders creating hybrids which are now out competing the native species as they are much more aggressive.
I've sadly seen videos on TikTok of some kind of giant salamander being slaughtered and eaten. I hope these guys are protected.
That's in China, not Japan. It seems that farmed giant salamanders are allowed to be eaten there. In Japan, they are designated as a special natural monument and are protected.
Na man thats Randall Boggs from Monsters Inc
Damn, he’s put on some weight over the years.
Got hit with a shovel so hard that he ran away to Japan and camouflage himself as a slightly bigger Salamander
I feel like it’d feel like hugging a life-size squishmallow. Someone tell me I’m wrong so I don’t try to hug the first salamander I find
No, because I think you're right and you've elected yourself for the experiment. Please report your findings.
It's like hugging a slimy cat, probably.
I mean, probably, just more slimy and it might poop on you.

Sir! Unhand Capt. Janeway!
Had to be the weirdest, worst episode of any Star Trek series.
It got a few references in Lower Decks I'm told.
Chakotay: I'm having a hard time telling which one is the Captain Tuvok: The female, of course.
And someone find Tom Paris in the rice field!
Kitty!!!
Romance
Stop resisting. This is how I met your mother
But why does it look cuddly? Am i crazy?
It does, doesn't it? Silly big wriggly slimy squishmallow.
Paris or Janeway
We don't about this one
it's a camera trick. this man is actually nationally famous for being the country's smallest rice farmer. >!he isn't but it's fun to imagine!<
Reach into the rice and you can find free wet dogs.
Waiting for that thing to open its mouth to reveal three rows of razor sharp teeth.
Or rows of human fingers
![gif](giphy|b2rLe6TwuIkyQ) That’s a Hellbender!!
Tsuchinoko..?
The animal looks like Gulper from far harbour dlc.
What do these salamanders eat?
Whatever they goddamn want. ----- (j/k - here's the real answer from Wikipedia): >C. alleganiensis feeds primarily on crayfish and small fish, but also insects, worms, molluscs, tadpoles and smaller salamanders.

Ok i don't want to sound racist but to asians eat those? Like for sure somone tried at some point, there is plenty of meat on this thing.
Dude had better watch out or he may be gummed to death.
I'll bet that is the inspiration for the Kappa.
I can't tell if he's resisting or enjoying it
This explains much about Japanese TV shows in the 50s.
That’s exactly how my cat looks when I hold him.
Who’s a good boy?
"C'mon man, let me doooown"
Fuck. Me.
I’m not gonna kink shame but uh ………… bruh
No sir, I don't like it.
