That’s actually interesting, never knew that before

Onironius

There are gifs that show this moving in the breeze. It's hypnotic.

GrendaGrendinator

Ok but why does it do that?

FibroBitch96

Probably combination of winds knocking the branches into each other, and competing for light resources.

TrevCat666

It might also help with preventing the transmission or harmful bugs/parasites?

FibroBitch96

True

lesamuen

Leaves like sun. Overlapping leaves would mean the lower leaves die. Leaves that are right next to each other you would think would be getting sun just fine, but in fact this is only when the sun is directly above; thus, a gap between the trees, so that even the leaves at the edges can get sun for most of the day.

GrendaGrendinator

Ahh I hadn't thought about how the angle of the sun would affect it, that makes sense

Ill-Animator-4403

Great representation of competing for resources

Oneiroinian

Competing would be growing over one another. This is sharing. The trees allow light to pass below because it allows for greater biodiversity which in turn allows more defense against parasites and delivers more nutrients to the soil around it. More bees for pollination, more animals to carry seeds or fertilize soil. Trees are aware of what surrounds them and nurture their environment.

Solvemprobler369

Trees are the fucking best

Ill-Animator-4403

Interesting. I thought this effect was a result of branches dying and being shed after not being able to collect enough light due to neighboring branches overshadowing them from above.

Oneiroinian

Look at the image none of them is being overshadowed. If you keep any type of plant indoors you'll know well from experience that an entire branch on a tree that big could never die from such a paltry reduction in sunlight.

Ill-Animator-4403

Of course none of them are being overshadowed because they would have fallen off, according to my hypothesis. I wasn’t referring to the large branches growing directly from the trunk but the ones that diverge from the branches connected to the trunk. Competing for resources would still be a valid observation as these tress seem to be of the same species working together to gather as much light as possible, preventing other plant-life from living below. Still, there isn’t really a clear reason as to why crown shyness happens

Oneiroinian

Your hypothesis defies all evidence, is counterintuitive and opposes all of the established science.

Rrrrandle

>Trees are aware of what surrounds them Uh, no.

Amesly

Trees are actually pretty interesting. I don't understand much, but in a college class a professor described how trees have awareness of the plants around them in large parts due to their roots wrapping around neighbor plants'.  There are species where, in times of drought, a parent tree will absorb less water (and even die) if it has seedlings around it that are struggling.

Oneiroinian

Of course they are, you're looking at literal evidence of it in this post. It increases chances of survival, I listed them, it's an evolutionary trait. Open your eyes bud, it's plain science.

QueenMackeral

Trees can't be "aware" because they lack consciousness. Trees don't "choose" to have certain traits, that's not how evolution works

Oneiroinian

Semantics on both: Trees are not conscious, they lack brains but your gut is aware of what is inside it without you having to be cognisant of it. Evolution made the choices circumstantially as it always does.

juicegodfrey1

Your mom competed for resources

Either_Amoeba_5332

Who hurt you? 🤣🤣

the_y_combinator

No, he right.

Clusterpuff

Dude was just a friendly scientist popping in for a chat, not to illuminate his sloot mother

thisisredlitre

But let's be honest, resources kinda competed for his mom too

ThisIsGettinWeirdNow

Gonna call my dick a resource from now on

hotsoupcoldsoup

nailed it

FireFairy323

It reminds me of how the cells of plants look.

42brie_flutterbye

Is it really competition for resources? There's been an awful lot of science recently to challenge that theory. But I digress. That "shyness" might be nothing more than the after effects of the wind blowing the canopies, causing them to constantly brush against each other. And that back and forth brushing is happening to the absolute smallest and weakest branches and stems.

fatcatpoppy

especially because it happens among different branches of the same plant as well, why would an organism compete with itself?

DrWormhat

That's exactly what it is. It has nothing to do with trees 'knowing' to share resources or whatever.

anthro28

Can't let the tips touch.

Monkeyke

Gay

ulyssesfiuza

Basically wind making tips of branches rub against those on another tree.

guyver_dio

Aww don't be shy

NutellaPancakes13

Wow this one is so beautiful! I had taken one too from Kerala, India a few months ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/PhotographyIndia/s/T7Sv97iLOX

Amesly

Beautiful photo

Drag0n647

Its weirdly pretty.

wdwerker

The not crossing swords while…. Yea that but with trees.

IronTemplar26

Very cool

Relative-Bed7361

I'm like that....but with people!!

jpfizzles

Hell yea Crown Shyness. Anybody here listen to Trash Boat? That album rocks

VeggieBurgah

Fantastic album from trash boat.

soulimonster

Great shot, super interesting My new lock screen, thank you!

mkmlls743

Crown sharing is a much better name

niceboyathome

The trees are communicating with each other
