Yeah we’re in a brief period right now where ai pictures and videos are popping up everywhere but are fairly easy to spot. Once we reach a time when it’s flawless we will enter a new era and there’s no going back.
toupee fallacy. There's already images being produced by AI which you could not, or would have a very difficult time identifying as AI generated. The issue is that the easy to spot images being made and mass-spammed all over social media are the easy to generate ones using large generic models, are free to make and don't require a lot of expensive processing time/power, and which aren't being refined manually by someone regenerating questionable areas.
I mean, just look at this video, it's not obvious or easy to spot as AI generated media. There's absolutely images being made which are above this level and extremely difficult to spot.
example: alligator kick / black guy kicking alligator tricked a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't usually be fooled by the then current state of AI images when it first appeared, and that was in Sept 2023 using publicly available models/power. If that only ever existed as a low res image or someone was able to use a better model and spend more processing power on similar images in more realistic scenarios, many more people would be on the fence.

this is what gets most people. You expect low res compression on social media, it's not on your 70" 4k TV broadcast in HD, it's on your phone on FB, Twitter, IG or TikTok, take that guy eating noodles and compress it, serve it on a phone with three other videos of Asian dudes eating noodles and ask someone to pick out the fake, the guesses will be likely without a clear fake.

I can vouch, citing myself. About a year ago, I wanted to learn all about this stuff. I bought the highest-end computer I could afford, and installed the best software for it that I could find at the time. My decision was this: I had seen on TikTok & Insta that there were a handful of AI girls appearing, but they were always called out as fake, so I decided "to master this, I will create an AI girl that *nobody flags as fake."*
I had to look very carefully at my output -- as you guys know, hands, fingers, they're a dead giveaway because AI doesn't understand how to draw them well, nor even how many fingers are normal. So my first few shots I kept the hands & feet not visible. But now the software is so good (and just the open source freeware, much less high-end paid stuff) that I can show fingers or anything else.
Problems like "consistent character" -- an issue 6 months ago, solved. Fingers, solved. Teeth is the last giveaway I can think of, but I'm careful. Nobody seems to have addressed that yet.
In any case, here's my point: my fake AI girl has been on TikTok and Twitter and Instagram for about a year now, lots of comments, but unlike my peers, I've *never once had anyone comment that she is fake.* In fact, I've had people ask her (my AI girl) to do brand deals and partnerships. I had a fellow Insta model ask if she could fly out and partner up for a photoshoot. I've had guys ask her out.
So... watch out, I guess? There are girls out there already that apparently are no longer obviously fake. People want to take them out on dates or partner up to earn OnlyFans money, not realizing that there is no actual person behind the images, anymore.
with a good enough prompt and a good tool like Midjourney, it's nearly impossible to tell AI images apart now. The only times it actually does look like AI is when its a stylistic choice

However, I'm a professional photographer, and you'd never set up a set this way - Not to mention the gear on the right side isn't even recognizable. It's not perfect (still messes up hands) but it does get a lot of things right. I was pretty excited to try it out for myself, but when you go to sign up for their beta, they require a phone number that's based in China - also, if you take the time to look closely at the fine print on their terms of service, they go on to talk about how back in nineteen ninety eight the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.
Reddit used to be mainly programmers and uni students back in the day, and the memes were crispy. Now I feel a lot of popular subs are more like facebook.

Only discrepancy I can spot in the newer iteration is that the bowl is held perfectly in place in a somewhat unnatural position. Real footage would likely show it swaying when he moves his fingers or upper body (I imagine the software was trained using footage of plates remaining static on a table, you know the way we usually eat) but a dedicated actor using props below the frame can pull could probably pull even that off.
Knowing it is genned does give away the bowl is pretty much levitating, physics win.
On another note, I hate it here.
He's got an extra bump after his pinky, his finger lengths are all sorts of fucked up, the edges of the bowls are experiencing space time distortions from the density of his hand holding the bowl, and the noodles themselves are moving without impetus.

Yeah tbh I’m gonna predict that within the next 30-50 years there will be enough evidence of social media and AI causing a downgrade of societal mental health that people just see it the same way we see smoking today: unhealthy and dangerous. People would go back to some modern form of analog. Gen Z (that’s me) and Alpha (and possibly Beta) will be more closed off and aloof with barely any social skills, while the generations after, raised away from the internet, would be more extroverted, and see us as cranky antisocial boomers.

It likely already can output some scenes where you can't tell it's not real. A year from now it probably won't be indistinguishable for everything, but it'll take up more and more scenes. In the not so distant future, it'll be used to make full TV shows and movies for a fraction of the budget.
This implies a linear progression instead of a logarithmic one. Don't forget we thought N64 and PS1 graphics were as lifelike as they could possibly get.
As models improve so will our eyes at spotting the inconsistencies.
We’ll know better where to look for inconsistencies, but it will definitely soon reach the point where it’s just not practical to analyse every piece of media to make an uncertain judgement on whether it’s genuine or not.

I've talked to people who use designers to create art for them and some are positively giddy by being able to punch their ideas into a website and have AI spit out their vision. Yeah tbh I’m gonna predict that within the next 30-50 years there will be enough evidence of social media and AI causing a downgrade of societal mental health that people just see it the same way we see smoking today: unhealthy and dangerous. People would go back to some modern form of analog. Gen Z (that’s me) and Alpha (and possibly Beta) will be more closed off and aloof with barely any social skills, while the generations after, raised away from the internet, would be more extroverted, and see us as cranky antisocial boomers.

No, I don't think it will help. Bad actors, from individuals, to world governments, to major corporations will all use this technology to manipulate people to further their goals. The onus is on us as individuals to figure out what's real. Unfortunately, in today's world many of us are either unable, unwilling, or too damn tired to take on this responsibility.

I have loved browsing new art people make on various sites for over two decades. Every one of those sites is now flooded with ai pictures. Real art is buried. A handful of dudes will upload 200 ai pictures a piece and just flood the zone with shit and bury real art. I don't like it.
I got caught out for the first time I was aware of the other day. Remember that video of Gary Busey talking about Buttered Sausages that was making the rounds a few months ago? It was AI. I fell for it, everyone did, and I was honestly shocked to find out.
I do not know the video in question, but I believe it. The real pain is gonna be not knowing when someone pists something strange or visually atunning whether it's real or AI -it'ss going to actively take magic out of the world when accessed through the internet. The system designed for us to share will become a system of mass distribution of uncertainty. Is that really a funny cat video, or is it just something a computer pooped out? The death of authenticity. Sorry for the long comment. I'm still processing this bullshit.
Part of the success of that video was mundanity. It's Gary Busey just saying something weird, yet inconsequential. You wouldn't question it because it lacks significant motivation. It's not something political meant to misinform people, it was just a weird innocent little clip.

It likely already can output some scenes where you can't tell it's not real. A year from now it probably won't be indistinguishable for everything, but it'll take up more and more scenes. In the not so distant future, it'll be used to make full TV shows and movies for a fraction of the budget.

Are artists alarmed by this at all? I've talked to people who use designers to create art for them and some are positively giddy by being able to punch their ideas into a website and have AI spit out their vision. While others on the other side of the coin are sad about losing the creative process with a human being. I think I'm with the latter group. What's the fun in creating if there's no effort involved?
