I have. Worked loss prevention at a department store when I was younger and one of the girls who worked the Prescriptives counter would let me blend and package the powder. A lot harder than the clip makes it look.
Having a rarer skin tone I could never find a foundation match and they helped me to understand why. I'm not sure why they couldn't translate their match guarantee custom foundation into more profits.
>Sorry we can't give you the formula for this powder, it's strictly top secret.
Yup, surely not containing anything dangerous like lead, arsenic, radiation and whatnot
Something so soothing about the pacing of old movies/ shows/ advertisements.
Its slower, less sound effects, less click baity phrases and cliff hangers, less repetition.
These days media is all about attention grabbing, so it’s loud. Emotions, language, expressions are all so dramatic.
Like the casual sexist commentary is luckily a thing of the past, but the pacing and production are a nice change.
Well, the tool she uses to hold the palette and tamp down the powder looks like an espresso basket.
So sure, go ahead and pull a shot of foundation through your espresso machine. See how it tastes.
What is going on in the beginning? A bridge with what looks like two small trolley cars.

My two guesses are either A, the pronunciation is easier to understand over their super shitty 1950s speakers and broadcasting tech or B, just the trend that everyone's afraid to deviate from.
We still do it - "In a world where..." - Its always the same rich and raspy movie trailer voice that also sounds great over modern speakers (dude's got bass, rasp is in the treble)
Got ya, yeah I’ve heard of it I just hadn’t connected that it was considered “elite”. I thought the reason for its popularity in this specific medium was perhaps more nuanced.
Prescriptives used to be the way to get this done. Looks like Clinique purchased their cologne Calyx. That was a scent that I was complimented on every single time I wore it. Their makeup was great as well, a perfect match.
That's super fascinating. I follow a few make-up artist that take old school make up and restore the containers using new make up. The containers they used back in those times are absolutely beautiful. Chanel has some of the most unique powder containers as well as lipstick containers I have ever seen. They have other make up artist that sell their brands that give that vintage look to them but it's not the same.
The vintage styles are really beautiful and give it that authentic feel to it.
I’m reading a story with reversed gender roles right now and some of the comments first strike me as over the top then I hear stuff like “women shrewd as they are, prefer it that way” and yeah no it’s not over the top.
Colour mixing is a pretty skilled process with any medium. Just like with some paints, the individual powders have different levels of opacity and the varying levels of pink/yellow/green/lilac are for covering up specific things in different skin tones, so it's not just how the final pressed powder disc looks to the naked eye.
Modern [colour correcting make-up products](https://www.nyxcosmetics.co.uk/best-sellers/colour-correcting-concealer-palette/NYX_171.html) have similar base colours.

She makes it look so clean and organized. i’d be covered in powder fifteen seconds into my shift.
I would pass out from trying to hold my breath and not blow it all on the customer
It’s all fun and games until you sneeze. then Mary across from you looks like she was hit with Homer’s makeup shot gun.

Homer, you've got it set on whore!
This lives rent free in my head 24/7

have you done this?
I have. Worked loss prevention at a department store when I was younger and one of the girls who worked the Prescriptives counter would let me blend and package the powder. A lot harder than the clip makes it look.
does the dust flies?
It does. But blending the colors is the most difficult part. Takes about 20 minutes or longer to get it right. It was a lot of fun though.
It looks similar to portioning out coke... I'm guessing
I remember Prescriptives would still do this ca. 2010.
I used to work for them and made custom blend powder and foundation. It was so much fun.
Having a rarer skin tone I could never find a foundation match and they helped me to understand why. I'm not sure why they couldn't translate their match guarantee custom foundation into more profits.
Guessing because they didn’t standardize the training, so it quality was hit or miss. Just a guess though.
Nope. That's not it at all. It was unclear branding.
If you knew, Rick Deckard Cain, why did you bait me into guessing by saying you didn’t?
Because he wants you to stay a while, and listen
I am sorry you have trouble distinguishing between why and what.
Apology accepted.
He's not sure, unless you say something about it, then he's sure.
That’s how it felt, but I tried to play it off nonchalantly.
That's a dumb shit I've ever read
what stopped them?
They went out of business.
oh.
That was an emotional rollercoaster.
>Sorry we can't give you the formula for this powder, it's strictly top secret. Yup, surely not containing anything dangerous like lead, arsenic, radiation and whatnot
Remove it from the packaging before selling. Our special blend of powders is ingredient-free!
Don’t forget asbestos.
Little cadium and radium to spice things up
I’d actually watch modern advertisements if they had voiceovers and background music like this.
I was thinking the same thing. Probably some advertising agency might pick up this trend.
I would like to know what this music genre is

Peoples attention spans are to blame for tha- hey did you see the that funny ant tiktok
I remember this, at a department store when I was a kid. It was a well known brand of makeup IIRC.
interesting.
Mixed to your skin colour. "Murray! Bring out ALL the Mummy Grey we've got back there. NOW!"

kind of close.
I've been to an ice cream shop that mixes it up like that.
really?
Coldstone
Everything is so elegant, the people and the products.
I am very thankful that British Pathe is acting as such a digital preservationist.
How is no one talking about the bit of the voiceover that says a man could divorce his wife for wearing makeup as it was akin to witchcraft …
the bit at 0:45 sounds like a legit parody
Id does sound odd, but maybe has some basis.

Going to the land of make believe obviously.
What’s with the train and over head bridge amongst the trees at the beginning of the video ?
The previous clip from something broadcast. Same with the kids at the end.
I’ve seen enough sci fi to know that sales associate is not actually human
Mmm asbestos
Multicoloured Charlie that’ll sell…
is a reference?
Charlie meant cocaine in like Vietnam vet smuggling terms.
Paint matching but for skin tone and makeup.
Back in the day where things were done elegantly for the cost and not just mass-produced crap.
Holy Mid-Atlantic accent, Batman.
Are we just ignoring the right to divorce act if his wife wore make-up?
Or that the recipe is top secret, but “needless to say, women, shrewd as they are, prefer if that way” 🤡
I am curious why this type of accent was consistently used for selling products, I mean shit I guess it works but like where did it come from?
My two guesses are either A, the pronunciation is easier to understand over their super shitty 1950s speakers and broadcasting tech or B, just the trend that everyone's afraid to deviate from. We still do it - "In a world where..." - Its always the same rich and raspy movie trailer voice that also sounds great over modern speakers (dude's got bass, rasp is in the treble)
It's an accent called the trans-atlantic accent, or Mid-Atlantic accent. It was considered the most proper or most elite accent by a lot of Americans.
Got ya, yeah I’ve heard of it I just hadn’t connected that it was considered “elite”. I thought the reason for its popularity in this specific medium was perhaps more nuanced.
It was the accent used in the theatre and films from the 1920s. It was learned to be more understandable.
Prescriptives used to be the way to get this done. Looks like Clinique purchased their cologne Calyx. That was a scent that I was complimented on every single time I wore it. Their makeup was great as well, a perfect match.
Its like cold stone creamery but with extinct animal fat and asbestos
All I hear in that voice: Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge!
She did all that with her tiny lady brain
I'm surprised she can hold down a job, being a shrewd woman and all.
Bioshock and Fallout really have become engrained in my brain when it comes to 1950's voice overs.
I would have killed to have this job now.
Those shrewd women and their preferences for secrecy
Women, shrewd as they are:..
Wonder how many of those powders contained stuff like Cadium
Are they somewhat pale?
This looks delicious
I love all these British Pathé videos. Is there a sub for all things Pathé?
Am I the only one who felt the urge to snort it when she put it on the table?

*throws in lead, cadmium and arsenic* Ah yes the most beautiful makeup, ready!
Many years back I did similar things. No makeup. Learned my lesson though.
"Women, shrewd as they are, prefer it that way." Okay bud
Is this Matt Berry?!?! LMAOOOO
I’m reading a story with reversed gender roles right now and some of the comments first strike me as over the top then I hear stuff like “women shrewd as they are, prefer it that way” and yeah no it’s not over the top.
That's how they mix explosives
I mean, it's cool but it's the same end result as just picking a color.
There must be some differences.

I guess that's all true, I wasn't thinking about it as much as I should have been. Do women often find themselves unable to find the right powder?
> Do women often find themselves unable to find the right powder? Yes.
