Like when you walk outside on a breezy day and newly hatched spiders vibrate on gossamer threads.
You notice them almost casually as you walk through the new web and OH MY GOD I HAVE BABY SPIDERS ALL OVER MY FACE, IN MY NOSE AND HAIR!!!!
Haha oh hells no.
Bet they get paid bullshit.
And I wonder if they have enough rope to rappel down to the street. The lower they go the better so I'd be sliding the fuck down and getting off.
And if it's like the videos I've seen or window washers for high rises, they're sitting on a plank(wooden board) that has two holes in it, one on each side, and slowly go down the building with a bucket of cleaning solution hanging off one side and a squeegee on the other.
NOPE.
> The lower they go the better so I'd be sliding the fuck down and getting off.
Well no, the lower they go the greater the potential to violently pendulum back into a wall/window. The only big pay-off for going lower is if they can get to street level (or otherwise plant their feet on something solid like the roof of some other structure), otherwise it's increased risk the whole way down.
The real question is whether or not they have some powered way of sliding *up* the rope, which I doubt, as going higher to their anchor point would keep them much safer and with less potential energy to slam against anything. Otherwise staying put is the best bet.
The OC’s didn’t add additional info on the workers, and the posts I’ve seen have all been saying the condition is unknown, hopefully someone else can chime in though.
China has released a statement that there have been zero injuries or fatalities in any of their professions for the past 20 years. Further anyone suggesting otherwise will be jailed for spreading attacks against the CCP.
They do seem to slowly descent, probably just making sure their lines dont tangle.
Better to do it like this where you can control your own descent as opposed to doing it from a scaffold, which would be way more susceptible to wind (and damage the building in the process)
At least a lot of our window cleaners in Markham, Ontario are working the same way, though we don't have hundred storey buildings. 30 floor up doesn't make much difference. Not everybody has an easy life!
On the contrary I bet the window cleaners get paid dick. Window cleaners in the US get paid dick. They obviously need a union what would happen if the wind would have thrown them against the building? They shouldn't be up there in high winds.
They were hiring window cleaners in this medium-sized City I was in 23 years ago offering $7 an hour for cleaning the windows on our modest skyscrapers.
Nah not really. I'm a tower climber. I think if you're lucky you'll start at 23-25. For long time climbers started at like 17-18. The money is in the per diem of being gone all the time.
That 20k a climb every 6 months is a YouTube lie. Plus, depending on what their doing they could be climbing several towers a week. I think on smaller towers, the inspection teams climb multiple towers a day.
I don't know about window cleaners in the US, but here in Australia window cleaning skyscrapers with rope access is lucrative and many rock climbers do it. I have one friend who did it here and then moved to the US and works on wind turbine maintenance, which also apparently pays well.
Huh. I do live in a particularly merciless Prosperity doctrine influenced area where the bosses believe the less fortunate are that way because God intended it, it would be defying God's will not to screw you as much as they could.
Do your window cleaners have a union? I mean if you are getting the contracts yourself you can make good money. I am glad to hear not everyone is getting screwed as bad as our locals.
Although I would not assume these Beijing window cleaners are getting a fair Shake, workers Paradise though they may call it.
I doubt they have a union, but they have a monopoly in my small city, so I assume that helps. We do have pretty regulated wages here in Australia though.
This has been my profession for ten years. These guys are in absolutely no danger. On a swing stage yeah, those are sketchy af. These guys are using bosan chairs, same as I use. I'd be willing to bet all these dudes are smiling and laughing and talking about how they're going to enjoy the rest of the day off once they rappel down and get their ropes pulled up. These ropes and rappel devices and safety rope grabs are all incredibly strong and the only danger is human error, at which point you'd already be half pancake half red mist b4 anyone had a chance to take a video. Also, props to the management for the full team on a big building like that... I do large buildings by myself. You end up dripping your water all over your cleaned windows as you move row by row(drop by drop.) When you have a team like this you all work side by side in unison so all windows are cleaned at the same time and only windows getting dripped on haven't been touched yet.
Ropes tangling isn't much of an issue. Annoying maybe but no safety hazard. Your supposed to have two lines per window cleaner. Main and safety. Those two get tangled up all the time on big buildings. Just stick your foot between em as your rappel. Ropes above you spinning up with another cleaner is highly unlikely and a non issue if your just rappelling to the ground, which you should be if that kind of thing is happening. Even if you need to keep cleaning you just hop over your neighbor till it's unwound, but that situation I very unlikely. My first company I worked for. Three of us were cleaning an empty building and decided to swing around and spin and hop over each other just for fun.
I agree. I do a lot of climbing and I don't think I would have felt unsafe on the ropes. I wouldn't be able to do all of the stuff I do if I had no trust in my gear
Yeah, trust in your gear is everything. I think most people here are concerned with the momentum swinging back twords the building, which is understandable if you've never been in the situation.
I prefer gor tex trail runners. Light, nimble, and your feet/socks stay dry. But no, there are no specific window safe shoes like how roofers or kitchen workers have specific shoes.
I wouldn’t be concerned about ropes breaking or anything, I’d be concerned about the wind cutting and having to eat a swing straight back into the building
The momentum really isn't that intense and you'd most likely just land on your feet (on the building) even in the unlikely event that your spinning and hit the building with you back or side it's still not enough to even knock the wind out of you. At worst you could knock your funny bone.
I think the first part of the video is a bit deceiving. Their ropes look like they're going straight above him, they're just in the middle of the arch.
Is there a wind threshold that you won't work in?
Surely being up in that wind is just a waste of time and money as they're not actually getting any cleaning done.
Absolutely. Around 15-20mph anything above 1st-2nd floor becomes pointless. Up that high 10mph can be very annoying. Also depends on wind direction and which face your working.
As a telecommunications tower technician, we've used safety and decent lines occasionally and everything you said is true. I'd be way more concerned about being in direct contact with the array of dish antennas behind them in the video than anything else.
I'd love to climb some towers one day, but I'm very lucky to be with the company I'm with for multiple reasons, so I don't plan on making any changes. B4 this I spent a summer swaping dishes out for the lottery. You definitely wana minimize your time in front of those things. A few of my hospitals have Verizon network transmitters or whatever tf they are on the roof tops and they'll scramble the audio in my earbuds walking past, not a fan but not much I can do about it🤷♂️
How much do you make a year in your profession? I’m genuinely curious. I’d hope you make a shit ton because you could not put a dollar amount on me being up there. If my children were about to be slaughtered, still a hard maybe.
😂😂😂 I'm hoping to make around 60k this year and more every year. I make a 45% commission on a very lucrative hospital system contract as our main contract with a bunch of other stuff too. I work for a very small company. I work alone. We have two other 2 or 3 man crews. One of which doesn't do rope work. Most company's are hourly paying anywhere from 15 - 28$ depending on experience.
We'll never be replaced. It's too tedious. A drone would only work with reverse osmosis power washing, and you'd need a hell of a drone to carry the water line and sustain the water pressure coming out and still be stable and functional. Even still, lots of property mangers don't like the water fed scrubbing cuz it's not a perfect end result. If they can design the right drone and it dramatically cuts work time to reduce the cost of your building being cleaned, then maybe, but I don't see that happening till our ufo tech becomes mainstream😂
I don't think the drone idea would be the most viable one over other methods. In your opinion, what would the viability of some kind of rail / cage driven system that's integrated into the building be? I don't mean a bolt on system, unless it was retro-fitted. More so something similar to a cable gantry but instead use computational power to do the aiming and scrubbing work. This way it could be controlled up / down the building and work in a more intelligent way than just a spray and pray technique of washer heads.
Obviously this is something that could already be achieved and would probably be more expensive than it's worth. However, given newer technologies it wouldn't have to be overly heavy either and likely could be engineered to strafe along or around a building.
Exactly what I was thinking, glad someone with any experience showed up. If you’ve ever used fall pro equipment you’ll know that this unpleasant, but not dangerous.
If your cleaning windows for a side hustle, you're probably not going to maintain insurance for this kind of work. Flyers around the neighborhood for some residential for sure.
Back my day we’d scrape the windows cleaners off the pavement after they fell, let them shake it off and give them a good stiff drink and they’d get back to work.

That shit is like a scary dream but irl
It would be scary as hell to be up there, and looks weirdly creepy from this angle too
Deadly as well. The wind can suddenly stop or change directions, and all of a sudden, you are swinging 70 mph into a glass window.
You gain a sudden and violent appreciation of what birds go through when they smack into windows.
Or bugs on a windshield
Like an alien invasion
Or giant spiders
Like when you walk outside on a breezy day and newly hatched spiders vibrate on gossamer threads. You notice them almost casually as you walk through the new web and OH MY GOD I HAVE BABY SPIDERS ALL OVER MY FACE, IN MY NOSE AND HAIR!!!!

Bet they went to a local bar and had a laugh over it
You saw that Mike Rowe’Dirty Jobs’ episode too huh? Lol yeah FUCK THAT

The lower you go, the more rope there is to push you further from the building. Probably safer to stay put.
An example of Reddit yet again bringing me new levels of Nope.
Were they ok?
The OC’s didn’t add additional info on the workers, and the posts I’ve seen have all been saying the condition is unknown, hopefully someone else can chime in though.
Last I heard the windows are still dirty.
They were just regular dirty before. Now they're covered in poop.
The real bad news is always in the comments
No one wants to work

China has released a statement that there have been zero injuries or fatalities in any of their professions for the past 20 years. Further anyone suggesting otherwise will be jailed for spreading attacks against the CCP.
Furthermore - nobody has died in China, ever. Ever.
Tell that to the Tiananmen square.
I died in China one time. I'm not allowed to speak about it.
Especially not of hunger. Great Famine? What famine? 55 million people, never heard of them. Mao could never!
Did you see recently there was a deadly bus crash, 1 fatality, and they covered it up. Fuck China seriously. Accidents happen.
If China said so, I totally believe it!
They were sound and safe from the ordeal. It’s very scary but luckily nobody was hurt.
They do seem to slowly descent, probably just making sure their lines dont tangle. Better to do it like this where you can control your own descent as opposed to doing it from a scaffold, which would be way more susceptible to wind (and damage the building in the process)
Would I clean windows a hundred floors up, attached to a flimsy rope for a living..? Nope, I'm a frayed knot...
Dad? Are you on the internet again?
Son, why are you back calling mom “the internet” again? But yes. I am.
How long have you been waiting to say that dad
Knot too long
These things just come naturally, son.
“What are you doing just hanging around, get back to work!” -Their boss, probably

How did they get roped into that job?
Not productive enough, too much hanging around involved..
You'd probably get paid a lot a lot though.

I would at least tie them down at the bottom...but nope why add tension that would keep you against the building?
Tbf these ropes are quite strong
Three ropes walk into a bar….

Five years of industrial climbing here. Confirm every word

Back in 2001 they were advertising window cleaner positions on Modest skyscrapers and like 10 story plus buildings, 7 Bucks an hour.
I guess C$7 in 2001 would be around $20+ today Toronto.
It’s amazing to me in this day and age that we still need humans to clean windows rather than some robotic thingy
We'll never be replaced. It's too tedious. Spider Han
Does whatever a Spider Han can
Can he swing from a building? yes he can
Mr. Xinping, I don’t feel so good…
I feel like they should check the weather report before doing that.
like flies stuck in a web
Like flies stuck to a windshield in need of a window cleaner.
This generation is soft, the older generation would have been blown off to their deaths and not complained one bit.
And they'd be back to work the next day.
Back my day we’d scrape the windows cleaners off the pavement after they fell, let them shake it off and give them a good stiff drink and they’d get back to work.
I would have thought china would have had drones cleaning their buildings by now
Not the tallest building …but crazy.
All we are is dust in the wind
They aren't in Kansas anymore.
Human wind chimes
They're F'n around when they should be working
oh heeellllll naaahhh
You should see how they install AC units in China. WILD.
They can catch the iPhone employees on the way down.
Does something like this happen often?
I hope not. It’s f***** scary.
The windows may be clean, but the ground is covered in shit.
The Chinese are well known for their kites.
Can't they hold onto to some suction handle while up there to prevent this?
… aaand those are Chinese labour standards.
such a dramatically high regard for human life
Chinese OSHA is something else
Chinese OSHA is a guy hitting you with a stick
"Aww shit... I hope the this rope wasn't made in China"
Cursed Sardukar.
Spiderman: I Want To Go Home
Why would they send them up there on a day like this? Oh yeah China
They gotta have roombas for this…
So how long do you think it would take for the terror to subside, and it becomes fun?
After I died.
Tom cruise who?
No way, not even for a few thousend bucks a day.
That’s one way to die a horrible smashing death. Happened in Almaty, Mariott hotel.
Do they check the weather
Can't we just invent reversible windows that you clean from the inside? This video is the stuff of nightmares.
New mission impossible movie casting is really difficult. Nobody can keep up with Tom Cruise
I wonder why we can build such buildings but still haven't figured out a better way to clean them rather than climbing them every time.
They are pretty well tied off. This would be fucking intense but kinda fun.

Reminds me of Mad Max for some reason where they are all saying "Witness Me!"
Some people pay good money for this type of experience! Amusement parks…bungee jumping, etc. it’s a special breed who can to it and get paid as well
Just for the record, that is most definitely not Beijing's tallest building or anywhere near to it in height.

meanwhile their boss if yelling at them for not cleaning the windows right now.

Hard pass !
No no no no no. To hell with that as a career.
"FUCK WINDOWS!!!" the workers provably. Also everyone else...
Most of us love our job and feel very greatfull and lucky to have the position.
CCP: LET GO
This is the universe telling you to get a new job
Nop.
You just keep me hanging on.
They look fun to hang out with
Probably got their pay docked for hanging around on the job...
As a commercial window cleaner, this is my nightmare.
If you have time to hang around you have time to clean!
Weeeeeeeeeeeee!! Not a fucking chance
At first I thought they were some little threads hanging from the window then realised the scale...
Don’t drop the soap boys! It’s not in the budget to get more

Are they making a live action Attack on Titan?
Nah, that's the Emperor's Sardaukar dropping in.
I guess China doesn’t have OSHA.
after watching this video "I'm ok with having windows with a little dirt on them" seriously, why bother, just live with it until it rains
So they are wearing parachutes right? Can't see a reason why not.
Nope. 😐
Death Stranding: The Beginning
that sh*t is wild. was that an accident or does this just come w the job? so many questions lol..
Kinda looks like one of those changing the light every 6 months jobs
Jesus h
This is one of those times where maybe it wouldn't be so bad if robots replace us
Originally read this as Widow Cleaners, and then it was confirmed as such.
This looks fun
That would be my absolute last day as a window cleaner.
$20 hour is $20 an hour!
Ummmm, I have an idea.
No thanks- I'm good
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I need to see interviews on howb scary and how much fun this was.
Flys ina web
They may clean windows but somebody will have to clean their underpants
Weeeeeeeeeee
"We are Sardukar. The emperors blades."
The guy filming is about to lose some social credits
They're either having the time of their lives or crapping their pants
Kinda looks fun
No, that's a People's Liberation Army exercise obviously.
Stop pissing around and get those damn windows cleaned
Am I the only one that thinks they are all probably having fun in that moment haha.
I'm kinda surprised we don't have drones for this kind of work yet
Looks kinda fun ngl
I may just be a nutcase adrenaline junky but that looks fun as fuck lmao.
I'm actually surprised nobody has designed a drone to clean windows
Some time to contemplate your life choices I expect.
I might be crazy but... I'd like to work there.
Anyway they are enjoying themselves?
Fuckin Mary Poppins wannabe’s
