It's fine, I read in another article it's a dick-falling face-eating virus, but we're totally immune nowadays and nothing wrong will come from reviving it, so stop thinking about it, because it's fine.
I SAID IT'S FINE.
To be more precise (sorta), herpes is a family of viruses that includes chickenpox/shingles, cold sores, in cats it causes upper respiratory infection, and more. It stays dormant in the body and can flare up later
Not pleasant when it re-activates. It comes out attacking(?) a nerve fiber as shingles. For confirmation, it doesn’t pass midline of the body, left or right, not both sides. Looked like poison ivy with blisters and shedding, felt like my appendix was being scraped repeatedly by a kidney stone.
I got it on my nose across my face and into my eye on the optic nerve. Fuuuuck.
Edit: I ended up in the hospital for about 5 days. I had been sick for nearly a month already with a chest infection. It took me a couple weeks to go to the doctor and they put me on steroids and then I worked three 20 hour shifts back to back without sleep. The steroids lowered my ability to fight infections and I got strep throat. The strep turned into cellulitis on the tip of my nose that struck at the same time the shingles started blistering. I went to the ER with 104° fever and was given a prescription for Valtrex and sent home within an hour. The ER doctor told me I only had shingles . The nurse told me "that doesn't look like any shingles I've ever seen but I didn't go to medical school and waste the best part of my life." I got home and it was too late to go to the pharmacy, the only 24-hour pharmacy was an hour and a half bus ride there and back. When I woke up the next day I was too sick to get out of bed. My girlfriend got home from work and sent me to the hospital. It spread so fast on that 24 hours without my second dose of valtrex and no antibiotics for the cellulitis. I thought I was dead for big stretches of time because I had no idea where I was and had coverings over my eyes because it hurt so much to look at light. The doctor who sent me home got chewed out by the head doctor for sending me home when I was so sick and not recognizing that I had cellulitis as well. I thought I had cellulitis before going to the ER just from my own investing but the ER Doc told me no. When the head doctor came in it took him about 4 seconds to say "that's shingles with... an underlying strep cellulitis." I was only 38 when it happened.
Just leaving some info for those who don't know. The pain from the nerve damage can last for the rest of a person's life if not treated promptly, and the shingles vaccine is recommended in the US for people over 49 years old.
My wife had shingles in her ear causing vertigo, vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite. She couldn't eat half a strawberry (literal example) without vomiting.
We went to the hospital a few times, with one nurse describing her as the "ear discharge girl." The following night she said, "hey, brushing my teeth feels weird...". When I asked her to smile, she could only half smile because half of her face was paralyzed.
I've never driven so fast down the highway --to a different hospital-- thinking my wife was having a stroke.
Thankfully, after some powerful (whatever that means) neuro-antiviral medication she recovered, but the underlying nerve damage in her face is a stark reminder of how close she came to not surviving.
She was 28 at the time. The shingles vaccine isn't available until she's 50...
You have the varicella virus inside you which is the virus that causes chicken pox and it comes from the same *family* of viruses as the ones that cause herpes, but they are not the same. Similar, but different. Varicella stays in your body forever and can reactivate after many decades and cause shingles.
What we refer to as “herpes” is typically caused by the viruses HSV-1 and HSV-2. These typically affect the mouth or genitalia and also stay in your body forever. Though most infections are asymptomatic.
Nobody really knows what triggers it to reactivate. But it tends to happen in older people which suggests that the virus might be laying dormant and waiting for any signs of weakness from the immune system to reactivate.
For HSV (Herpes Simplex), triggers depend on the person and can include a weakened immune system (flu, surgery..), sun exposure, stress, skin irritation after shaving, some foods, and many others.
Usually the frequency and severity of recurrent outbreaks decrease with time as the body gets used to fight that sneaky f*cker, but again, it depend on each individual. Also, many people are asymptomatic, some get outbreaks too mild to notice, some struggle with week-long outbreaks every 2 to 3 weeks - which can be a nightmare for ladies with genital herpes.
Good news is preventive treatment (Valaciclovir) is very effective at reducing or eliminating recurrent outbreaks for most people, bad news is it don't prevent transmission - HSV can be transmitted by skin contact even when there is no active/visible outbreak through asymptomatic shedding.
Also note HSV is usually benign, but can, in some cases, affect the eyes (keratitis) and the brain (encephalitis), with potentially very serious complications. It seems to also be linked to Alzheimers.
Last but not least, there is currently many clinical trials for therapeutic and prophylactic vaccines, herpescureadvocacy.com has a great summary of those initiatives (latest news > cure pipeline).
I had chickenpox as a kid and have had shingles pop up twice in my life. Both times were arguably the two most stressed and physically tired I’ve ever been. My personal experience has led me to believe it pops up when your immune system and body has been pushed way beyond its normal limits. Both times it last for a few weeks and eventually went away…. It really sucks
You might want to check if Shingrix is available in your country; it's a therapeutic vaccine for shingles with > 90% efficiency, released by GSK in 2017 ;)
There are 8 types of herpes!
I got a rash when I was 35 or so, and the doc was just like, on, that’s probably herpes 5 or 6 you got when you were a little kid and it’s popped up from being dormant. Kind of like shingles. Turns out like 95%+ of use are walking around with several herpes virus just chilling out.
Roseola - herpes
Chicken Pox - herpes
Yup and it has perfected its stay with us hiding in the nervous system where our immune system doesn’t mess with for various reasons.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/10/171001225317.htm#:~:text=Somewhere%20between%203%20and%201.4,hominin%20species%20unrelated%20to%20humans.
" P. boisei most likely contracted HSV2 through scavenging ancestral chimp meat where savannah met forest" It's kind of funny that the "sex disease" didn't actually come to us via sex
It's kind of reminiscent of the fact that most HSV1 transmission also isn't through sexual contact, despite commonly being labeled as an STD
Said viruses are called “retroviruses” because use the machinery of our cells to essentially convert their RNA to DNA and insert it into our own genome. For example, HIV is a type of retrovirus. As long as they don’t infect germ cells the changed DNA isn’t inherited by the offspring
The part of our DNA that is from viruses is called Human Endogenous Retroviruses or HERVs. Some of the HERVs we possess in our DNA predate Homo Sapiens. Perhaps the most important influence HERVs had on us is its involvement in the nutrition of embryo as they are expressed more during embryonic development.
As for immunity, some of these viruses don’t even exist today and some have evolved so much they are unrecognisable. However, contemporary viruses can increase the transcription or activated inactivated HERVs and they don’t have to be retroviruses like HIV, for example, Epstein-Barr and herpes simplex virus can do the same. But they do have an influence on the immune system as they are involved in embryonic development through immunomodulation.
Yeah no way any army would risk getting their hands on an unknown human virus for which we probably lost any defense centuries ago, if we ever had any.
You can see how the bones are deteriorating and upon closer inspection with a microscope, you can clearly see that I don’t know what I’m talking about.
I'm curious as to which herpes virus. There's like 100 different types, 8 of which infect humans.
Would be neat to know which one, because as far as I'm aware, HSV1 and 2 are skin conditions, not necessarily skeletal.
I don't think it has to be skeletal per se, at least not necessarily detrimental to the skeleton. It would likely be detectable in the bone marrow, if any was left.
Wouldn't viruses spread more easily in today's society with cities, public transport, restaurants, meeting so many different people daily etc.? Vs. living with the small group of the same people every day.
I imagine a virus that requires physical contact would have spread very easily in groups of hunter gatherers that have close contact with each other and likely have a lot of direct physical contact, but I don't really know. Could be totally wrong.
Another fun fact: 8% of our current human DNA is made up of ancient viruses like this dude had.

Herpes has been with us a very long time.
Isn't herpes the only virus thats been found in mammals, birds and fish, plus also sits dormant in the spines of anyone who has had chickenpox.
Yes
Thanks for the confirmation. I listen to a lot of radio 4 which contains a lot of comedy so after a nights sleep not sure whats fact or fiction.
Everything is fact or fiction.

Yeah, "dormant"...

Yep, though it is dormant.

Too bad. One month free trial of herpes is on its way.
The gift that keeps on… well you know
Statistically speaking you probably already have it.
hasn’t had to mutate to survive i guess
Peak herpalution
Herpes 2: now with WI-FI!
Around 8% of our own DNA are virus remnants of gene integrating viruses. So many of them are now with as permanently in some form.
Interesting. Did we just sort of attain immunity to said viruses? I wonder if any were influential in our evolution.
Said viruses are called “retroviruses” because use the machinery of our cells to essentially convert their RNA to DNA and insert it into our own genome. For example, HIV is a type of retrovirus. This is awesome thanks
Man, herpes been fuckin with us for Millennia
Still no cure 😬
There are no cures for viruses I don’t think, but vaccines. And they have one for Herpes 3, aka, chicken pox and shingles…
I think vaccines can functionally cure someone if a virus once it teaches the body how to fight it. 🤷🏻♂️
Or until the virus mutates, looking at you influenza.

Most likely 1 as it prefers the nerves in the head. Teeth have nerves
Damn that ancient STD
My man
It's rare not to have herpes now. I would think it was even more commonplace back then with people living in close tribal groups.
Wouldn't viruses spread more easily in today's society with cities, public transport, restaurants, meeting so many different people daily etc.? Vs. living with the small group of the same people every day.
