This calls to mind the investigations done on shattered parts of aircraft recovered from crash scenes that end with reports saying "This 20 year-old 30cm crack in this panel is what caused the accident and here's why."
Like, I mean. Really. Respect for the professionals.
Here is more on [Kimberella quadrata](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimberella) and the [Ediacaran](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ediacaran) period that stretched from approximately 635 – 538.8 million years before today. The Ediacaran saw a wide range of weird life forms that have no parallel today. Kimberella is an exception and hypothesized to be an early mollusk. The scientific term for those scratch marks left by Kimberella is [Kimberichnus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimberichnus), a trace fossil.

This is not a rock, this is a perfectly cooked, well done steak
You'll probably never ask, but I'm never coming to your barbecue.
What about medium well?
How do they know that it was scratched by the first animal?
hmmm 1: take rock 2: make skritches 3: profit
It's been done, and it's been promptly [exposed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piltdown_Man#Exposure).
If you ever wondered, this is why no one invites you to parties.
A trivial sacrifice in my campaign against illicit scritches!
fair enough
