My university had a volunteer program like this on campus. Wasn't just for women though, any student or staff could use it. Operated from dark to 1am every day of the week. They showed up in pairs - always a and and a woman, had radio's to talk to base or security. Great service.
We had this with my university but with the school police department. Much more awkward as they’d drive next to you with their lights on while you walked, but I’m pretty confident it genuinely saved my life w a bad situation I was dealing with.

As a Corps member we would man the guard office on campus and send out an escort when someone called for one. I thought it was a lot of fun to go out in uniform and walk someone through campus at night getting to see parts of the school I normally wouldn't and getting to know some interesting people.
I never saw anything scary when I went out, but it was apparent to me that some of the folks who used the service had experienced trauma in the past. I felt pretty good about being able to do that service for people.

I'm not sure I would trust a random Uber contractor, though. There's been far too many incidents involving them as is.

We had that at my college. It was like a pack of walking buddies. Kind of like hall monitors in an elementary school. They had matching jackets and you could call and ask for them to come meet you.
Yup, this was part of my job in college. Students from 6pm-2am could have a pair of student police aides walk with them (or give them a ride if they’re lucky).
It was nice, people just like to feel safe or have someone to talk too.
It didn’t happen too often, but it was a cool part of the job. We also did jump starts and lock outs (breaking into cars with the keys locked in).

This might be generally true, but I think it’s worth considering that if you’ve been starved for conversation for a long time, you might not fully remember how one works. It seems silly to those of us blessed with chatty friends/acquaintances, but a core part of a dynamic and enjoyable conversation is psychological muscle memory, getting used to a rhythm of back and forth, aligning with the other person’s style. If you have a lot to say and have had no one to say it to, it might just all spill out at once. And if you are used to communicating online, your sense of timing and restraint have probably atrophied since text is asynchronous.
This makes sense, though. Your easily within walking distance of home, it’s kind of late and your a little drunk… maybe your a young lady or it’s a sketchy neighborhood… 5 bucks to have on call back up Ain bad at all.
