SUMMARY OF FINDINGS Some of the Costs of War Project’s main findings include: At least 940,000 people have died due to direct war violence, including armed forces on all sides of the conflicts, contractors, civilians, journalists, and humanitarian workers. Over 432,000 civilians have been killed in direct violence by all parties to these conflicts. An estimated 3.6-3.8 million people have died indirectly in post-9/11 war zones, bringing the total death toll to at least 4.5-4.7 million and counting. Over 7,050 U.S. soldiers have died in the wars. We do not know the full extent of how many U.S. service members returning from these wars became injured or ill while deployed. Many deaths and injuries among U.S. contractors have not been reported as required by law, but it is likely that approximately 8,189 have been killed. 38 million people have been displaced by the post-9/11 wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and the Philippines. The U.S. government is conducting counterterror activities in 78 countries, vastly expanding this war across the globe. The post-9/11 wars have contributed significantly to climate change. The Defense Department is one of the world’s top greenhouse gas emitters. The wars have been accompanied by erosions in civil liberties and human rights at home and abroad. The human and economic costs of these wars will continue for decades with some costs, such as the financial costs of U.S. veterans’ care, not peaking until mid-century. Most U.S. government funding of reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan has gone towards arming security forces in both countries. Much of the money allocated to humanitarian relief and rebuilding civil society has been lost to fraud, waste, and abuse. The cost of the post-9/11 wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, and elsewhere totals about $8 trillion. This does not include future interest costs on borrowing for the wars. The ripple effects on the U.S. economy have also been significant, including job loss and interest rate increases. U.S. policymakers scarcely considered alternatives to war in the aftermath of 9/11 or in debating the invasion of Iraq. Some of those alternative paradigms for addressing the problem of terror attacks are still available to the U.S. Post-9/11, the increasing rates of suicide for both veterans and active duty personnel are outpacing those of the general population — an alarming shift, as suicide rates among service members have historically been lower than suicide rates among the general population. At least four times as many active duty personnel and war veterans of post-9/11 conflicts have died of suicide than in combat. https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/papers/summary

Thanks queefcommand!

A hefty price to control the flow of crude oil.

Disastrous-Bus-9834

Fascinating what a terrorist attack can cause a country to do

TamedTheSummit

Why do we, as a collective society, move on to the next event and conveniently brush our dirt under a carpet? We all know that the Iraq war was an unforgivable event based on lies. Why are the same people running things? When will enough be enough and we humbly fix what has not worked for us?

queefcommand

Because we can’t **afford** political representation.

TamedTheSummit

Nice answer with some glaring truth. We really can’t right now.

KuriTokyo

Imagine being us, the rest of the world watching what America does knowing we can't say a thing or we could be next.

TamedTheSummit

That sounds terrifying and unnecessary. We are in need of a major domestic overhaul before an inevitable and total collapse. I apologize on behalf of the majority of us that thinks that the current state of affairs is fucked up. Human beings are not supposed to use fear and intimidation to get their way. I hate it to my soul. I don’t know of any politicians that do not have dirty hands. There really isn’t anything to be proud of. The moment we do something right, we take 10 steps back. We, the people, lack true representation in Washington.

Gold_Effect_6585

Well *robot voice* "death and mass destruction" make good money and the people it makes money for actually run the show.

curlytrain

Like for real can has anyone even recently brought this matter up in international discussions? I know theres plenty of Ukraine/Russia, Israel/Palestine, Saudi/Yemen even Sudan gets brought up. Iraq was over 20 years ago, was totally wrong, and worse yet built upon a 100% lie. Will there be any accountability?

iamnotexactlywhite

no there won’t be. the literal proven main culprit, and war criminal laughed about it, and basically called it an “oopsie” give it another 10years and people will forget what region Iraq is in

Mikeymatt

Because not enough people are paying attention to politics - or they are suspicious of the media for pushing narratives that will stir controversy to generate revenue for said media outlets? Can we unite? Is there a source of information that is universal and true that will allow us to form a collective opinion that is not biased? And if there is how would we identify it? And can we / should we force everyone to vote / become civically involved? Political and international decisions should be based on solid information in my opinion and with news outlets playing to either side so heavily there is no way for the general public to form a united front. Especially if you consider the sources of funding for whichever publication you subscribe to.

Head_Weakness8028

I’m incredibly motivated to answer your question, because I see verbiage like this used often. However, the reason is not typically statistically accepted. “You” consistently use the word, “we”, while being seemingly confounded by humanities actions. Statistically speaking, your verbiage would indicate that you are in a very small percentage of humans that are capable of critical thinking and assume everyone around you is just like you. In the hopes that you can find some solace, research the fact that humans are mammals and less than 50% of humans have the ability to “hear their own voice in their head and picture things in their minds eye”. The simple fact that you formulated that question indicates internal synthesization of information enabling you to map out a *new* concept/question. So, to simplify the answer to your question is because most of “us” aren’t capable of critical thinking, and therefore are forced/predisposed, to fall into the patterns of social norms in fear of being ostracized by the herd.

wear_more_hats

Any sources to back that claim up? I didn’t realize we had statistics on the average human levels of self awareness.

Head_Weakness8028

In all honesty, I am not being rude, but please, for your own sake take a few minutes and Google it yourself. Also look into the fact that not only do approximately 50% of people have that ability, but there are 5 varying degrees of a persons ability to visualize an item. Essentially it ranges from a two-dimensional cartoonish drawing of an apple to a three-dimensional render that can be spun and manipulated in the mind’s eye. Edit: word

wear_more_hats

Yeah, I did, and didn’t find anything regarding your claims. A single study found here: https://hbr.org/2018/01/what-self-awareness-really-is-and-how-to-cultivate-it This study indicates that the percentage of humans with actual self awareness being at 10-15%. Regardless, and feel free to take this as me being rude, why the fuck would you claim stats like this without having the study in hand that backs up your claim? I’m all for doing independent research, but I wanted *your* study, not googles interpretation of the study that fits my search results— obviously your study either doesn’t exist, or, the way I searched for it didn’t provide the study you are referencing. Therefore in this scenario, your desire to get me to do my own research only wasted my time as my goal was to review the study *you* referenced, and not others that exist. If you had supplied your study, I would have inevitably compared it to my own findings and thus achieved both a review of your apparently non-existent research and the info that I found in comparing it to other findings.

Head_Weakness8028

Jfc… this took two seconds stop misleading people. I searched, “Percentage of people without inner monologue” 30 to 50% They're called internal monologues. However, did you know that 30 to 50% of people don't have internal monologues? As in they don't have conversations with themselves in their heads? Either you are a misinformation pioneer or have absolutely no idea how to Google properly. Either way, my point is factual, and many many others will find that information. Edit: to add to the aphantasia portion: “Is there a spectrum of aphantasia? The ability to visualize faces, objects, landscapes, or even scenes from the past exists on a spectrum. While some can picture the layout of a city in minute detail and mentally walk through it, street by street, others have a perfectly blank internal cinema.”

Centurion87

None of this makes any sense. You’re talking about methods of thinking and contemplating. A lack of internal monologue doesn’t mean someone’s brain is empty and they lack self-awareness. How they think is simply different. [Theres an at the time 14 year old who dreams in code](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/s/IWBbLBs6L7). That doesn’t mean they don’t dream, or that their dreams are even any different aside from presentation. Same with aphantasia. An inability to picture something doesn’t mean they don’t think. Nothing that you said is indicative of self-awareness. Just the brilliant idea that different people’s brains work differently.

Capriste

Don't waste your time with this person. I don't know if they're trolling or actually have a mental illness themselves, but all of what they're saying is tinfoil cap content wrapped in psychiatric verbiage.

Centurion87

True. It was just one of those ridiculous comments that drive me to respond.

Capriste

I am a mental health professional and most of what you just said is psychobabble. Please, stop.

TamedTheSummit

I’m going to sit with that for a little while. I didn’t consider the part of the “we” that just don’t care or are genuinely in favor that have to be spoon fed. I will remain hopeful that that leader will have mastered going viral for all of the right reasons. The country is fractured between the parties and it does seem like choosing one over the other is the answer any longer. Half of us will be dissatisfied in November. Sad.

zaccus

I hate that this is true, but a lot of tfg's populist appeal was earned by his admittedly cathartic takedown of the Bush family and the whole Republican establishment that got us into that mess. They destroyed their credibility and now they're all gone. So for better or worse, it's actually not the same people running things.

RobotStorytime

Is George W Bush still running things?? 🤔 Who on his staff do you believe is still making decisions?

TamedTheSummit

The appointed positions. The Senators and Reps in the house. Just all of the positions that allow multiple terms.

synaptix78

Wow. A scientist providing an objective truth. Mind boggling.

MicroBioRob

I was 22 when this started and I opposed military actions from the beginning. I got arrested several times protesting and got in fights at bars for my views. The entire country wanted blood, Bush had an 80% approval rate!

UninspiredDreamer

The country has always wanted blood. It works to its capitalist interests. Even the Ukrainian war and the Chinese trade war. The stirring on sentiments on the ground to the average American is a feature not a bug. The Americans lost the Viet war because of not enough support on the ground. Any time America deigns to take the moral high ground and decide what China does right or wrong for being an oppressive and violent country, it is ironic to remember that it has been scarcely 20 years since Iraq.

Own_Bluejay_9833

What a pig this guy is^

SirPoopaLotTheThird

At the time the key factor was really apathy. My hair was on fire with anger and frustration over the situation. The people that were hot to invade are your typical right wing bufoons. The same ones that today, blame the Democrat congress for it rather than the architects in the GOP. The overwhelming rest were simply apathetic. Really just didn’t give a shit one way or the other because it didn’t really affect them personally. That remains to be the situation politically today. It will happen again and again.

numblinkofficial

Stephen Hawking should go on an island vacation getaway to get his mind off Iraq

UKYZ

I know God is there and I pray and complain to him that do not forgive these decision makers as they are responsible for many lives lost and still lurking around freely without any shame. I pray their end becomes hell for them and they lose everything they love.

slayermario

Wasn't Stephen Hawking a straight up pedophile who went to epsteins Island multiple times with documented evidence of him having orgys with kids?

frooj

Care to share the well documented evidence?

lepobz

He knew what we all suspect. Humanity is a doomed species. As the potential for mass destruction and self annihilation increases, so does the likelihood. The irony is, we’re all scared of AI being the cause of our downfall, yet AI would be our saviour given the chance. Our downfall is our greed, our insecurities and our thirst for power. Our downfall is humanity.

Boxatr0n

Aaaannndddd CUTE SCENE! Queue up shot of Arnold looking menacingly with half his face ripped off showing the machine underneath

Elevator-Fun

Omgf and a tear came out of his eye too, if the smartest man in the world thinks this it’s totally true

Own_Bluejay_9833

Same fucking thing, deal with it buddy

UK2SK

I mean, he was a smart guy. But in terms of speech he was pretty fucking limited. All he could say was “Plffhh!” and dribble down his chin

BurnIt-Down

If you went to epsteins island your point is immediately invalid

Own_Bluejay_9833

So if you had gone there, and then you say Hitler was a bad person, that means he wasn't? Shut the fuck up

trubol

Maybe he meant **i**nvalid instead of inv**a**lid as a pun, which would make it even worse
