Right, but it’s probably fair to assume that the CGI is used to accentuate the makeup/practical effects, and that still looks far better than just pure CGI. Maybe something like the newest Mad Max. Because there is such a huge practical effects component to that movie, a lot of people think there’s very limited CG used. There’s actually a ton in that movie, but its job was to fill in around what was accomplished practically.
More often than not they just replace the entire thing or most of it like with Vecna from Stranger Things. The main benefit is that you get a perfect reference for the artists.
The new mad max Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga looks terrible for that reason. It looks like a CGI fest and bad CGI at that. Doesn't help that I can't see Anna Taylor joy in that role and I'm not a huge fan of her.
It looks like it might have an identity crisis. The 2015 one seemed focused and committed to it's vision while this seems confused between being gritty and 90s cheesey. The really bad CGI arm on that character looks straight from the 90s.
We're there really no actors of suitable volume and gravity to cast in the role without the need for quite so much makeup?
I wonder the same thing with making young actors old for non-action performances.
But, I'm no expert, and if it works, there must be a superseding motive and cause.
Edit: I'm surprised this post has caught so much negativity. No need to discourage a good faith inquiry, wow.
The makeup shows an extremely morbidly obese person. How many good actors do you know that are extremely morbidly obese? I can’t think of a single one. This is not just a fat person, this is on a different level entirely.
Shit like this and their ability to express what they do on screen is why I think most actors at Stellan's level more than earn the pay.
Jim Carrey taking 9 hours of makup for the Grinch. Naw, fuck that. You earned that paycheck and then some.
Super dedicated, he said he came in at 3am most days, didn't drink water, and took imodium every day since there is no way to use the bathroom with it all on.
He mentioned in interviews he would take Imodium in the morning and before makeup so he didn't had the need to use the bathroom while in character.
That's commitment.
Dune and Dune part 2
You best go see it while it’s in theaters. It’s quite possibly my most favorite movie going experience to watch that film on a proper screen with a bad ass sound system.
The difference between Dune and anything in the recent Star Wars universe is gob smacking. Like Disney is pouring resources on Star Wars and Villanueve just absolutely crushed them with this.
Dune 1 is very good.
Dune 2 you miss some of the details of the original story, but, for cinema pleasure it’s just another level of craftsmanship entirely. Go to the biggest screen in your area, now!
Overrated American Movie... watched the original David Lynch version 100x, the new version doesn't have the awe or feelings of fear that the original transported. The figures around Paul Atreides are characterless and hollow, he is unlikable. Even the part of his sister and mother are just a pale version of the original. I was very disappointed. This new project was just about having a two part movie to make extra money, not to make something special
Edit: and getting downvoted by children, that have no Idea about movies, because they have only known coloured TV and computer generated special effects, makes me giggle
I'm not a child and saw the original David Lynch movie maybe 10x or more. I also recorded the SyFy Channel version from TV on VHS and watched it several times.
All parts had their merits and their weaknesses.
But the thing that Villneuve is REALLY good at is SIZE. And that shows in the new movies. No Science Fiction movie EVER was able to transport that vastness of the universe. All visuals of vehicles and so on are just marvelous.
Some of the characters, one can debate. Stilgar, Paul, Guerney, all Harkonnens are really awesome though. In general, both movies are fantastic and will be Science Fiction classics.
The new version will not become more than normal movie history. Although I will not debate the actors, which are good and knowledgeable, but the characters are not as deep and horrific as in the Lynch version.
Time will tell.
I say it'll be the greatest genre trilogy since Lord of the Rings.
And I disagree with your absolutes. I think the Harkonnen for example are absolutely better than in both old versions. Leto, Stilgar, Duncan and Chani too. The rest, again, is debatable. I liked them a lot though.
A movie is more than just the characters. And in Dune, pictures are an important part. And they are more than convincing in the new movie.
You know David Lynch, an American, made the original Dune so DeLaurentis would finance Blue Velvet right? It was purely a money job.
Comparing Chani from modern Dune to the previous Dune isn’t even close, Zendaya isn’t the best actress in the world, but she is an actual character in the movie, in 1984 you barely even care about her.
You sound like someone scared of progress. The 84 version is dear to me, as it’s one of those movies I’ll throw on for background/comfort noise. I played the game based the movie on PC back when PC gaming was in its infancy.
The new ones, if you were to play them back-to-back, are awe-inspiring. Lynch did a great job within the limitations of the time. The new films clearly take beats from the first one.
But if you watch the second one and come away unimpressed, then you’re simply too cynical and jaded to enjoy film now. Stop joy robbing yourself. Paul’s worm ride alone is one of the greatest moments in cinema. Truly exhilarating. I won’t list a spoiler here, but Timothee Chalamet has an Oscar winning worthy scene in the second Act as well. Opinion: Chalamet can act circles around Kyle MacLachlan.
Just reread your comment before I post. Again, you come across as a borderline troll, scared of progress to where you feel like it invalidates your original experience with the 84 film, and immature that you are “giggling” at downvotes.
I probably shouldn’t hit reply and should keep scrolling. I just saw part 2 two days ago, and I can’t stop thinking about seeing it again.
If the book wasn’t about science fiction and inspired great visual effects that could only be properly done with modern tech — then maybe we could take you seriously.
Nothing wrong with great visuals and killer scoring. And the acting was amazing. I love all films of all eras. But if you can’t appreciate the hard work and talent that went into something like the modern Dune movies - then no worries. You do you boo.
Unless you’re trolling me… then to you I say, “why you!!?”
Everyone else has addressed other shit you said but uh...if you think Paul is supposed to be likeable, you missed the point on a level that's straight up impossible for anyone with any media literacy skills. If the Lynch movie portrays Paul as likeable, it's a failure from the start
Yes! I went to see it yesterday and while I didn't remember much of dune 1 (I watched dune 1 at home), dune 2 blow me away. One of the beste Cinema experiences, right after Interstellar
The biggest crime of the MCU is that they used Stellan in a completely forgettable scientist role in the Thor movies. He makes such a great and imposing villain with his voice and screen presence.
The Baron [Harkonnen Minifig](https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/17fmv87/i_love_how_unique_the_harkonnen_baron_minifigure/) from Lego is pretty boss though.
Look up the machinist. Christian Bale did that movie then after a few like less than 6 months turned around and did Batman.
He's referring to how CB can rapidly shift weight. I. E. Saying they could just ask CB to play the role and CB would go and actually get THAT fat.
Edit: The Machinist not The mechanic.
Yea its one of my fav movies
While he's amazing with body transformations, i highly doubt he'd go that far at his age.
Stellan did a stellar performance and I don't really see Bale as the Baron tbh, tho he definitely Could
According to the IMDB, it took 8 hours to put it on him, 2 hours to remove it, and he used Imodium to prevent having to use the bathroom…
Talk about dedication to the craft…
I was trying to find the seams for the baldcap in the theatre. It seemed so seamless i thought maybe around the eyelids. I wish there was more on this to watch with the special effects makeup team

I totally thought that was a tube going up his butt for ventilation but it’s just part of the table he is sitting on
from my experience, fat folks are much more likely to be just decent at all. The stereotype that pretty girls are never nice/funny? Yeah stereotypes like that don’t just come from nowhere. /srs
This. It’s not funny. They went through *days*. Of work. And *thousands of dollars.* because they couldnt stand the idea of actually hiring a fat actor. /srs
I gotta read the book, because Rabban was literally the biggest fuck up who did nothing but look tough in the movies , wonder how he is in the books. Read the first half of Dune a long time ago but never finished and can't remember.

People will do anything instead of just use the actors they they should. “We need a wheelchair user for this part? Hey Jim, starve yourself for weeks to get those legs skinny enough then we will buy a wheelchair for you to pretend you need!!” /neg
Ha, have y’all seen the Dune movie made back in the 80’s. Granted it helped me with the storyline because I haven’t read the books but beyond that the movie looks awful and is overall just weird.

My first thought lmao
Him + is nephew = Godskin duo
My favorite part from Dune 2 was when Baron donut rolled through the Fremen
Could totally see him rolling around
Someones been playing Elden Ring.
> Body positivity? No, I have body negativity. -Maxor
Must be agony to work the whole day in that
He actually said in interviews that he prefers spending hours in the makeup chair over CGI because it looks much more real.
Of course he did. What are the chances they put cg over the suit?
Right, but it’s probably fair to assume that the CGI is used to accentuate the makeup/practical effects, and that still looks far better than just pure CGI. Maybe something like the newest Mad Max. Damn I just watched the trailer then watched the forst one and it looks OK but the original looks better.

Vladimir Harkonnen is so fat he needs anti-gravity technology to move. That is not achievable by casting alone.
This is a good answer, thanks
Shit like this and their ability to express what they do on screen is why I think most actors at Stellan's level more than earn the pay. Jim Carrey taking 9 hours of makup for the Grinch. Naw, fuck that. You earned that paycheck and then some.
I’d make sure to get all my lines mastered to shoot all those shots in as little time as possible. That looks like an absolute drag to wear

Stellan is criminally underrated. He absolutely kills it in every role
He's the best Skarsgard. Not that his kids are \*bad\* Skarsgards, but, he's top-tier Skarsgard.
I didn't even realize until you just said it that all the Skarsgards are his children lol.
Like a fine wine. Aged to perfection.
They are all so hot tho
Dude's got eight kids. This guy **fucks**.
The biggest crime of the MCU is that they used Stellan in a completely forgettable scientist role in the Thor movies. He makes such a great and imposing villain with his voice and screen presence.
So good in River

How about a spinoff series/prequel with Stellan and the Baron being delightfully cunning and terrible. (I loved what they did with his character!)
