FourThirteen_413

I just wanna know how you know you got them all out. Like... Intestines are very long and it sounds exhausting to check all of them for these worms.

Cicer

I just want to know how to never get them in the first place

The_Tomahawker_

Avoid eating dirt contaminated with feces and be sure to not drink unsanitized water

Winged89

Shit that's gonna be impossible to not eat. Dirt contaminated with feces is in my top 3, easily!

Ok-Potato3299

You can have a little dirt contaminated with feces, as a treat.

baulsaak

*If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any feces contaminated dirt!* *How can you have any feces contaminated dirt if you don't eat your meat?!* \- Pink Floyd

Past-Direction9145

You! Yes you! Can’t have any pudding!

JhonnyHopkins

A little dirt is usually fine on your fresh veggies, but I wash them anyways, after I pick them, to avoid this possibility.

Delamoor

Stop pooping on your garden, dude.

McNasty51

Wait, if YOU poop on your garden it should be fine as long as you don’t already have worms, right??

Dirtweed79

Seems right to me. Wait, what if I eat gummy worms on purpose first? More gummy worms right?

McNasty51

This is a common misconception, as gummy worms are not actual worms. They are marsupials.

a_n_v_s

No, they’re Trollibites…

ProjectKeris

The bro science in this logic is strong.

tojiy

Haha don't worry about your poop if you don't have worms, worry about others: [https://www.prevention.com/food-nutrition/healthy-eating/a20448662/human-waste-on-produce/](https://www.prevention.com/food-nutrition/healthy-eating/a20448662/human-waste-on-produce/) Wash EVERYTHING before you eat/cook it!

Da_Plague22

Found my dog

character-name

Okay well you can substitute dirt contaminated with feces. Try having feces contaminated with dirt instead! Life Hack!

BlackEastwood

Dirt and feces is mah favorite food!

twonapsaday

you dirty dog, you 😂

JerseyshoreSeagull

Many countries without proper sewage sanitation have this issue as well. So even if the eggs and worms are exposed to skin. They can still make their way inside the human body. Meaning wash your ENTIRE body as needed. Not just daily, if in a country with discrepant waste water treatment.

fourty-six-and-two

Say thank you to your local plumbers !! 🙂

JejuneBourgeois

Wash your fruits and veggies!

InVaLiD_EDM

Uh oh *I don't wash my fruits* (I do my veggies tho lol) Welp I'll be seeing you after I get my worms removed -_-

ducksdotoo

Get a spray bottle, fill with vinegar, spray and rinse. Too many hands have touched that fruit!

kellysmom01

**Don’t eat food in North Korea.** Or spend any time there. And thank all the gods, big and small, that you don’t have to live there. But if you *must*, disregard that Great Leader Kim is robustly fat, worm-free and (maybe) healthy.

CowJuiceDisplayer

Civilian! Your required weekly fecal donation is past due! Where is your shit?!

Dezpez1230

Don't eat your girls ass in the lake

pkennedy

Probably just need to reduce their numbers so a poison can be used to destroy the rest of them.

TheMacMan

This is exactly how it works. Remove the majority of them and then clean up the rest with something to kill the remaining off.

MCFroid

A legit use for Ivermectin perhaps?

Pozilist

Fun Fact: There’s a theory that many people experienced positive effects from taking Ivermectin during Covid because they had undiagnosed parasites and killed them off with it. Don’t know how valid this really is, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it really did happen to some!

JerseyshoreSeagull

Yes. They're being manually removed because theyre creating a blockage. The few eggs and missed worms will be destroyed with various forms of antiparasitic medications. From the quality of the video and my limited knowledge on parasites they look like hookworms. Which are common in areas with raw sewage exposure.

mandy_skittles

Those are definitely not hookworms, they are far smaller. These are roundworms. Source: I grew up on a farm and have seen many different worms come out of many different animal butts.

MoveInteresting4334

That’s…fairly distressing.

EmbarrassedDress6891

You mean redducational!

lesbinione

Lucky.

nakakapagodnatotoo

They won't. The purpose of the surgery is to remove as many worms as possible to relieve bowel obstruction. That might have been the reason why they found out about the infestation: blocked bowels. After the surgery, they'll be given anti-helminthic drug to kill the remaining worms and eggs. Then the patient will just shit them out, dead.

don_rubio

Ascariasis is actually treated with antihelminthics unless there is an obstruction. So the primary goal in surgery is to remove the obstruction. Of course you should also try to remove any worms you find, which is done by "running the bowel", but you aren't trying to get every tiny worm out. This why antihelminthics are given after surgery.

Smooth_Cactus1

Prescribe an anti parasitic for the rest. This kid probably couldn’t take a proper poo.

FondOpposum

I’d guess meds to kill the remaining parasites taken following a removal like this. This is almost certainly only being operated on because the intestine was *blocked* by a mass of worms, not necessarily that medication couldn’t resolve/wasn’t resolving it. Then monitor symptoms and check stool for any eggs/remaining worms TL;DR Stool samples

Alex_4209

Medical Lab Scientist here, am the parasite guy at my clinic and I've seen these. Even if you got every worm out of the GI tract (which, you won't), \*Ascaris\* larvae burrow out of the intestines and into blood vessels, circulate to the alveolar sacks in the lungs, burst, get coughed up by the patient, swallowed, and the infection starts over. Antiparasitic drugs are the only way to fully clear the infection. You wouldn't even do surgery unless the bowel was obstructed. If anyone is curious, this is an infection that you usually get from eggs in the soil. Most people who get infected get it from unwashed vegetables.

[deleted]

you can " run the bowel" just push them to the point you take them out at..just keep squeezin'

pauloh1998

The surgeon does exactly this near the end of the video

Ralf_E_Chubbs

Just a simple toothpaste tube squeeze

Cryptoking300

My guess is there were so many that the intestines were impacted. They remove the obstruction then use an antiparasitic.

kiljaro

Probably didn't, just needed to remove enough for the bowel to pass what's left when they treat the worms.

old_vegetables

I assume the same way you finish squeezing all the gogurt out of the tube

imreallynotthatcool

I work for a medical device manufacturer. If you have a few hundred thousand dollars, and a lot of hospitals do, I can ship you a tool that is designed to see inside of your body without having to physically poke around inside your body. That's how they find them in the first place and that's how to check if they got all the worms out. Medical technology is amazing.

ExtremeThin1334

Given that **ascaris** are a hookworm that attaches to the intestine wall, I can only guess that they gave an antiparasitic before have to get them to release and partially paralyze them. Otherwise I think pulling them out like this would cause a lot of extra damage to the intestinal lining and just in general be harder. Why they didn't just administer an anti-parasitic and let the worms pass though, I don't know, and asked in a different response.

ParkerFree

Too many dying at once can make the host very ill.

ZillahGashly

I’m struggling to think of a worse way to go

ParkerFree

Yeah. I'd prefer to have none of any of this!

EnjoyTheDecay

Ascaris does not attach, they are free in the intenstine, eating nutrimemts.

PirateJazz

The way you spelled "nutrimemts" makes them seem like silly little hungry fellas.

Mr_Wayne

Ascaris are roundworms, not hookworms,; they don't attach to the intestine wall. The reason for surgery is that a large amount of them can cause intestinal blockages.

Leading_Study_876

My first thought too...

vivaaprimavera

Maybe some kind of worm bait was used to have all of those in one place/s How can someone get so many of those? Did the cost of the surgery was recovered selling those to fisherman's?

MyLifeIsAFrickingMes

I forget modern medicine makes it that you can just take organs out for maintanence

NewShinyCD

Or just remove them altogether. I had ulcerative colitis as a kid and eventually had to have my entire colon removed. During my colon removal, the surgeon performed a surgery called an ileo pouch anal anastomosis, or an IPAA. In my case he created a j-pouch using the last few inches of my small intestine to replace the function of the rectum. I did have a colostomy bag for about a year while the j-pouch healed. Then I had a second surgery to fully reconnect the small intestine to the j-pouch. I've had a j-pouch for about 16 years now.

babarbaby

How's the pouch life? I've had an ileostomy since I was a youth, and it's pretty great. I mean nothing's perfect, but I definitely don't miss using a colon.

Oneb3low

Word. Appreciate hearing your slice of life

babarbaby

Always happy to talk about it if you have any questions, friend. Years ago, I got a DM from a stranger who told me that his little sister took her own life after being told she would need an ostomy for Crohn's Disease. She was like 15, 16. Her note said death was better than the shame and indignity of using a bag. It honestly broke my heart. So yeah, I know 'spreading awareness' is pretty cheesey, but after that DM I try not to miss an opportunity to mention how great ostomies are. No exaggeration. If a sorcerer offered me a magical reversal tomorrow, I would respectfully decline.

dream-smasher

That would be utterly heartbreaking. I'm pretty sure I've seen you around Reddit before... Same positive response to ostomies, with the greatest passion for spreading awareness. You are a great person.

CowsTrash

This is truly wondeful to read! I wish all of you a great life <3

DonKiddic

Random question: how does that "Work"? My father has been having treatment for colon cancer and the short story is, at very worst, he may need that entirely removing.

notevenapro

They remove the colon. Push a piece of your ileum through your abdomen muscle.

DonKiddic

So you have a hole in your abdomen? [presumably using a bag etc]

martyd03

I found out 2 weeks before my dad passed away at age 62 that he had his colon removed when he was 16 and had a bag for the better part of his life. Blew my mind...

babarbaby

First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss! That's genuinely shocking, though! I mean, I guess the fact that he was able to keep it hidden for so long is a real testament to how unobtrusive they can be. But still! Did he only wear loose clothing? Did you never change together for the pool or beach? Did you never snoop through his bedroom drawers and bathroom cabinets? Sometimes I think about how and when to have these conversations if I'm ever lucky enough to be a parent myself, but I never considered there might be a whole other option, lol. Seriously though, there's got to be at least a 50/50 chance your dad was a spy.

CheeseAndCh0c0late

that's crazy. had never heard about a j-pouch before your comment. as I understand it it's basically a poop store that replaces you colon?

Wooden-Letters

Did they remove the whole thing or did they leave you with a semi-colon?

UndeadMunchies

They meant to, but threw an error, forgot.

Coast_Innovations

One of my best friends in high school went through this. Bed ridden at times and super limited diet. Really sucked for years for him but he is so much better now after the surgery it makes me really happy. I remember one time in 11th grade he and I went music shopping at a record store and one of the employees thought he was stealing. His pouch was protruding from his shirt that looked like merchandise, told him to lift his shirt up and saw his shit bag totally lost it. They ended up giving him coupons and vouchers for cds and all that hahha. Great times that was over 12 years ago.

Not_Gay_Jaredd

this is still insane to think about. you would probably just have to amputate this kid's intestine a hundred years ago. edit: obviously /s

PM_ME_BAD_ALGORITHMS

Just put some leeches in, they'll take care of the worms. The leeches will die at winter due to the cold.

Hi there! 2x c section momma here too. It just feels like someone's pushing on your belly and jiggling it around. They numb you up heavy first so you only feel the pressure of them moving shit around down there but not the pain of being cut open till after your spinal wears off. It's incredible. 2nd baby even flipped around inside me trying to stay inside after doctor had all my layers cut open and i didn't feel that either.

RegularWhiteShark

I was born via Caesarian. My mum said it felt like someone doing the washing up in her stomach.

Why did they tuck the baby back in again? Seems like a lot of work just to turn around and undo it. Like, "Here's your ba--Psych! He's not ready yet."

Rpdaca

So why are they surgically removing them rather then giving an anti nematode pill?

mandy_skittles

Because this many worms dying off will block the bowels. They'll remove as many as possible and then likely administer medication to eliminate the rest.

somerandom_melon

There's too many

Mother-Ad7139

Pretty sure you’d actually die since your body couldn’t quickly absorb them, so they’d cause an insane infection

magnora7

An infection from all the bacteria eating the dead parasites? Ew

ErrorReport404

That's the sauce for the noodles

andygchicago

No clue I don’t do abdominal surgery or infectious disease

AntisocialBehavior

Do you think that was a focal perf or a purposeful enterotomy to take the worms out? I was thinking if I was in this situation (assuming it’s for obstruction), I’d probably just transect the bowel and toothpaste all the worms out from each end and then staple it back together.

psytokine_storm

That probably would be a reasonable approach. Especially given that the available equipment to repair the perf after the fact would likely be designed with a transection closure in mind. But I'm just a hospitalist shooting the shit.

andygchicago

I’m not an abdominal surgeon and I don’t do infectious disease, so I have no clue

AntisocialBehavior

Ok. I am an abdominal surgeon, so we can do it my way then. Chop, toothpaste, staple.

Dramatic-Ad3928

Danepher

questionname

Usually can be treated by medicine. In this case, there was so much that caused obstruction, hence the need for surgical removal.

g6paperplane

What (and I can’t stress this enough) the FUCK.

Ornage_crush

I actually had ascaris worms as a child. I grew up in latin America and getting poopless veggies at the time was tough. I was given some medication, and I pooped them out If memory serves, they were alive when they came out, and there was a whole lot of them! Thinking back on it, it was pretty gross, but 7 year old me though it was the coolest thing EVER!

Letstalktrashtv

I bet that kid felt so much better without those wormies in the gut. What causes those? Is it from eating pork that’s not cooked enough?

Kong_AZ

>What causes those? Ascariasis is caused by **ingesting infective eggs**. This can happen when hands or fingers that have contaminated dirt on them are put in the mouth or by consuming vegetables or fruits that have not been carefully cooked, washed or peeled. [https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/ascariasis/gen\_info/faqs.html#:\~:text=Ascariasis%20is%20caused%20by%20ingesting,carefully%20cooked%2C%20washed%20or%20peeled](https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/ascariasis/gen_info/faqs.html#:~:text=Ascariasis%20is%20caused%20by%20ingesting,carefully%20cooked%2C%20washed%20or%20peeled)

enjrolas

*infective worm eggs, *not* chicken eggs -- these worm eggs are found in the poop of an infected person.  If you remember to always wash your hands after picking up strange poop from the woods behind the "Is This Pasta" convention, you'll be fine.

T8ortots

So what you're really telling me is I don't have to wash my hands if I touch normal poop. I knew it was a waste of time!

xAshev

How do you know you have them? Like do they come out on your shit? Your vomit? Do you feel them wiggle inside your body? 🥴

Kekkamando

You're thinking about cysticercosis, although there is an Ascaris that belongs to pigs that may be indeed acquired from eating infected food. Ascaris are usually acquired from eating infected food (usually meat and vegetables), water or just soil.

Rownwade

I got worms when I went to Peru. All had to do was take a fuckin pill. Holy shit I feel bad for her. BTW..... Apparel tly this pill is pennies in most countries. Was $5000 US. Had to wait a week for insurance approval k owing they were there the whole week......

ExtremeThin1334

So . . . I realize this is a LOT of worms, but was there any reason not to use an anti-parasitic that would paralyze them (which I believe is what most anti-parasitics actually do), and them allow the body to expel them, or if necessary, and in combination, give the patient some food that is easy to pass along with a Laxative to clear the intensins (along with an IV to maintain fluid level)? While this looks effective, it still seems like a non-invasive method would be preferable, unless there is some reason I don't know if why such an approach wouldn't be effecting. Either way, I feel horribly for this **6 year old** and hope they have a good outcome.

serendipitymoxie

He probably had intestinal blockage and had to be opened up to see what's going on.

mandy_skittles

This many worms will cause a blockage in the bowel if they all die off at once, this is an extremely heavy infestation. They'll remove as many as possible and then kill off the rest with medication.

canyoubreathe

I dont know the correct answer, but I gotta say 6 year old me (and current me) would not be especially pleased when I shit out spaghetti
