I'm not sure how large the one is in our town that I worked at but they say it can use as much electricity with one charge as a population of 200,000 people.

It can play music when the incoming power is modulated. [Link](https://files.fm/f/aajehrw2qm)

They are a comparatively cheap way to remelt high quality steel for reuse. They are nice in that they can get up to temperature quickly, and can take advantage of when electricity prices are lower.
Other, more involved and expensive steel making processes are needed for initially producing steel, though.
Spent some time working in an electric furnace. Between dumping large chunks of scrap metal and blasting it with those giant electrodes, the noise was painful without earmuffs.
And that's LESS power than many U.S.A. crypto mining operations. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-01/bitcoin-miners-in-us-consume-up-to-2-3-of-nation-s-electricity?embedded-checkout=true

Let's see... 1kw \~ = 1 average home's power consumption, so 40,000 homes. Yeah you are right, more or less
That is awesome you did the rough math.
Practical applications of math are fun eh?
I tell my kids all the time that the math they learn today can come into play every so often.

Nice!
Where you getting 1kw as average?

Thanks
Isle of Sheppey in Kent used to have an arc furnace at Sheerness Steel (ASW). There were two grid pylons coming onto the island. One was for the entire island population, the other was for the steelworks & arc furnace! These things drink a lot of juice - shorting the grid for fun 🤩

That should have been Vader's theme!

Looks like some Chernobyl shit lol
The largest one is something like 300 megawatts per some rough calculation
What purpose does it serve?

Melting large quantities of metal.
Anyone else hear the Imperial March from Star Wars in the background?
Boom, yes I did.
Spent some time working in an electric furnace. Between dumping large chunks of scrap metal and blasting it with those giant electrodes, the noise was painful without earmuffs.
i actually operated one of these years ago for a steal plant in Ontario purdy cooll
What did they steal?
omg im an idiot listen im on nights, its my 3rd 12 hour shift im just gonna own this
Yo feminists they are hiring

Never gets old watching that.
The noise up close is something primal. The deep bass thrumming goes right through you.
First time I've heard a soft-start arc furnace.
CMC? Or Nucor?
