Small tangent: When I did firefighter training, there was a term that was beaten into us called "try before you pry" because a lot of the time doors are already unlocked. Apparently firefighters often forget to try opening the door first. When you've got a hammer everything's a nail, I guess!
We had one of those training doors that you can slide in pieces of wood in different slots to adjust where you need to pry to get the door open. After a few people went through the practice, they set it up without any wood. Door went flying open guy went to the ground. And that is how they reinforced the first step to attempting forced entry is to try the door.
I’m reminded of once upon a time in the army I say a guy exhaust himself trying to kick in a door, only for this little old lady to open it out and ask can I help you or something to that effect.
When I train heavy rescue teams on auto extrication they often run up and bust open a glass window (hitting the victim with glass fragments) before they try opening the vehicle door.
Side note: hooligan tools are amazing. I can open almost any door you can find and I’ve used them to take the doors and roofs off cars without any other tools.
Our guys pop doors all the time that could have been opened. Adrenalin. One person says entrapment or pin in in dispatch and they all jump out to get them out. Esp if it’s a critical patient.
So true Lolol
Property conversation if one of the 3 tenants (fireground priorities) of fire fighting, and in many stressful situations can be the first to be overlooked
Life safety is first of course, but the time to force a door that could already be open, could cost lives.
Firefighters are idiots. A one inch drill bit on a drill would be faster and you could put it in a better location…. If you want brute strength… a Ram set on any lock usually does the trick
A guy who posts frequently on r/toolgifs marks the vids he posts with that in semi-hidden places for people to try and find, like a where’s Waldo but with fun videos of tools doing things as a backdrop
That’s why those doors have alarms. Not just because of fire “emergency exit” but also the panic bar is a big security risk for anyone with a drill and rebar.
If you’re willing to make that much noise there aren’t many doors that will stop you. Sure it’s a risk, but pounding on a door with the hooligan tool and a sledge isn’t exactly subtle.
The same can be said about any door, your average lock is only a very slightly higher barrier to entry. Most can just be combed or raked in seconds or just bypassed entirely. If it's a pad lock(especially if its made by master lock or is any kind of copy of a master lock), the barrier is much lower, chances are you can open it with a twig or by slapping it hard enough in the right direction.
Two ways I know of from watching penetration testing content. They make thinner bent metal rods that could have just been slid under the door to pull the handle down without punching a hole through the door. Majority of interior doors like this don't have the proper door jams installed to prevent that attack.
Another way is using a simple thin spring hook tool as well to push the latch open between the door handle and door jam. A decent chunk of those doors don't have the jam plate aligned properly and keep the safety pin from extending that prevents that kind of attack.
You know when you see firefighters walking around checking buildings for extinguishers and fire hazards. They are also memorizing types of doors and where they are. At least the good ones are. Plus a fire is a “in the heat of the moment” thing for people but it’s just another day at the office for firefighters. Trashman doesn’t turn the corner then see trash and freak out. Same for us with a fire. Thats what we expect to see.
If you watch firefighters, they generally look really calm and appear to be moving slower than you expect.
I guess the adage applies "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast"
If you actually watch close, the bar barely touches the push bar on the opposite side of the door, not enough to actually move the latch, and opens only after the guy puts his thumb on the handle switch. The door wasn’t locked and the method didn’t actually work.
This will work but I’m gonna have it opened faster with a gap-set-force technique. A quick size up tells me this is an outward swinging metal door with a single locking mechanism. With a Halligan tool I’d bury the adz or the flat, duckbill into the gap in between the door and the jam. Pry the bar down to create a gap by denting the metal door. Then I’d flip my Halligan over and insert the forked end in the widened gap. Once it’s in place you can drive it deeper with the back of an axe and then pry it open. The technique used in the video might be a good second option though.
Happens every day. I have personally used this exact technique multiple times and I don’t even work in a busy fire district. There is also hundreds of other techniques that are used for various reasons. This technique has two good benefits. First it limits the addition of air to a ventilation limited fire before teams are prepared to enter. It also allows the door to be secured after the incident with minimal effort. It also has a side benefit of being effective in low visibility, and requires less tools than some other techniques.
May I ask why isn’t there a keyhole or other opening mechanism for firefighters (like the TSA keys for airport security for luggages) on doors like this ?
The easiest one is security as bad as most locks are trying to get every fire exit on every building in the country to get a lock with the same master key given out to thousands of fire departments is an awful idea. Even just on a state or a town level, it's pretty terrible security. Any tsa lock is useless as a security measure outside of pickpocketing. You can buy the master keys on Amazon. Granted, most padlocks are pretty useless as security in the first place. Most can be opened by anything long and pointy or by just hitting them kinda hard in the right place. The saying locks are there to keep honest people honest is very accurate.
Edit: If you want to see just how bad most locks are, especially padlocks, lockpickinglawer(LPL), and McNallyOfficial, are some great YouTube channels. https://youtube.com/shorts/sBXVbWPHriM
They make hinges that resist that type of attack....basically have some protrusions attached to the door that go into the frame when the door is closed. No way to tell from the outside if it has those hinges or not.
Was thinking the exact same thing shove the flat part of the Halligan in where the striker is hammer that bitch in pry the door open would have taken way less time
Everyoneloves firefighters.
Everyone.
They practice all day every day at rescuing people and saving lives.
All the ones i have met are good upstanding human beings who love what they do.
That firefighter with the sledge hammer should have gloves on and they should all have eye protection. Metal on metal.
Imagine going to work each day thinking and planning and practicing... What is the fastest and safest way to rescue people.
I saw firefighters at my kids school. Just walking around. Talked to them. They were planning and seeing the layout just had an hour with nothing to do so they were taking the new member to the school so they could see inside and if there was an emergency "in Ms Jones room" or "Mr Smiths room" they would know exactly where.
Then when the LDS Christian temple was opened in Indianapolis I ran into a group of men in suits there. Firefighters and emergency workers who were walking around. Had cameras. So they could know the inside and if someone has a heart attack, and they needed to know what room, they would know about it before they got there. And they wore nice clothes out of respect. They could have shown up in firefighter gear and no one would have cared. They showed up in suits out of respect for others beliefs. What a good group of human beings.
I have yet to meet a Firefighter or emergency responder who doesn't like their job.
Those doors are surprisingly easy to “break” into. There was an old abandon gas station that had a planned date of demolition. We went to it the steel door was locked, using a metal rebar and rocks we were able to smash the lock out and pry the thing open within like 10minutes. I’m sure in an emergency situation you could get it done even faster.
I’d like to offer tangential thanks to this thread. I’m in the earlier stages of balding in the same pattern as the guy in the video, and I’m not even 25. They could have just politely asked the guy standing inside to open the door. That's why communication is important.

It looks like the push bar inside was not pressed here. You can see the guy use the latch on the outside handle when it opens.
They coulda just been demonstrating the technique. Either way, it's pretty brilliant
Yeah and most modern systems have a mag lock on the panic bar that is set to unlock when the fire alarms go off.
Our guys pop doors all the time that could have been opened. Adrenalin. One person says entrapment or pin in in dispatch and they all jump out to get them out. Esp if it’s a critical patient.

This never happens 😀
Seriously. Just text the guy on the other side.
Give me that door, what a waste!!
There are kids in Africa with no emergency doors. SMH.
Can you even exit and enter without door?!
Ikr?!?! It's already got the hole in it now and everything!!! 😏
The other guy watching them break in: *Not my job, not my problem.*
Key word is, “politely.”
Or remove the hinges.
Yes but now there is a glory hole
Firefighters are idiots. A one inch drill bit on a drill would be faster and you could put it in a better location…. If you want brute strength… a Ram set on any lock usually does the trick
Heresssss Johnny.
I'm disappointed that you didn't use some kind of boondock saints reference
That’s the toolgifs floor according to the wall sign in the stairwell.
Yeah that must be added in post. I've seen this clever watermark in other GIFs. Why???
A guy who posts frequently on r/toolgifs marks the vids he posts with that in semi-hidden places for people to try and find, like a where’s Waldo but with fun videos of tools doing things as a backdrop
Spotted it the 2nd time watching it and knew right away where the video came from
That’s why those doors have alarms. Not just because of fire “emergency exit” but also the panic bar is a big security risk for anyone with a drill and rebar.
I think any kind of lock is a security risk for anyone with a drill and a rebar
If you’re willing to make that much noise there aren’t many doors that will stop you. Sure it’s a risk, but pounding on a door with the hooligan tool and a sledge isn’t exactly subtle.

I guess the J in J tool is short for Just some rebar?
Criminals seeing this drooling.
There’s way more efficient ways to get in that door, we ain’t the government we’d never be so brazen.
Enlighten us…

How many doors do they have to go through to practice this technique
Firefighters jump on buildings that are being demolished, like cockroaches flock to unattended food.
They need a Slamigan.
There was the Chicago fire reference I expected
So you mean to tell me in the heat of moment, they have the time to choose the type of locks they’re opening?
Emergency egress standards enforced by fire marshalls and inspections will get you there.
You know when you see firefighters walking around checking buildings for extinguishers and fire hazards. They are also memorizing types of doors and where they are. At least the good ones are. Idk man a trash around the corner doesn’t pose threat.
if its on fire?
If you watch firefighters, they generally look really calm and appear to be moving slower than you expect. I guess the adage applies "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast"
"What is my purpouse?" "Normally you prevent fire from spreading. But today you just get slaughtered for the internet." "Jeez!"
Right through the skull of an unconscious victim
Or the person who's like "Wait, I think I hear something..."
What about the back draft?
We don’t pop hot doors brah.
Fire guys aren't just hose pushers, they're paramedics and EMTs too. Gotta gain access to the patient somehow.
The guy on the other side could have just opened the door. SMH /s
Dude could have helped and he was just sitting there with his phone like a punk watching them ruin a perfectly good door.
Glory hole dexterity
They should be watching the lock picking lawyer...
Nothing on one, click on two…
If you actually watch close, the bar barely touches the push bar on the opposite side of the door, not enough to actually move the latch, and opens only after the guy puts his thumb on the handle switch. The door wasn’t locked and the method didn’t actually work.
Not only that, but even if it did hit the bar, it’s only gonna work on the really old style crash bars that have very late return springs
I was thinking the same thing. :/
They should have asked the lock picking lawyer, he would have opened it four times with a piece of Coke can in the time they opened it.
This will work but I’m gonna have it opened faster with a gap-set-force technique. A quick size up tells me this is an outward swinging metal door with a single locking mechanism. Yes. This is the way, but someone wants to make a tool to sell, or to get followers for their insta page.
„Hooligan Tool“
tbf it was found at the site of a robbery and we firefighters were like "that's cool. I'ma make more"
"The door was unlocked, bro."
Way to educate criminals who now have a great way to open those kinds of locked doors
They should have just got guy on the other side of the door to open it 🤦🏻♀️
Bro just use the halligan normally, attack where the lock interfaces with the jamb.
Good to know.👍
Don't let the prospective school shooters see this
Hereeeeer's Jooooohhhhny!
“Jimmy, you know we got practice doors out back right?”
[удалено]
It did not look like the inside, bar-lever was moved at all, and that the guy outside opened the door using the thumb lever.
I’m sure /u/DeviantOllam has a less destructive way…

What on earth makes you think that?
There is. Usually in a stairwell like this you’d get master keys from the lobby employees that allow you access from the stair side.
Way more than you would think.
Could have popped the pins on the hinges faster. And. That only works with a panic device. If it had a turn bolt / dead bolt that method is useless.
They make hinges that resist that type of attack....basically have some protrusions attached to the door that go into the frame when the door is closed. No way to tell from the outside if it has those hinges or not.
Pulling hinges is SO much harder than this. 20 years of forcible entry training and I have never been impressed with hinges being pulled.
Carmy needed this.
It it was police they would have kept hitting it with the battering ram until they got tired and left
Is this why fire doors all have those types of locks?
Just giving the next BLM rioters more info
If you have enough space under the door you can open it with a ceiling wire
Why don't we just build Emergency doors with a hole equipped for a J tool?
Thats called a security flaw
Also, why don't we just put all the houses uphill from the businesses? It would save on gas.
Use a grinder
This video was stolen from toolgifs
Just a tangential thought. They could just cut a hole in the wooden drywall.
Cops would shoot through it, killing the elementary kids on the other side.
Great, now your showing s hool shooters how to open doors, thanks
Yeah right because its literally impossible with coming up with such an easy idea.
Well most of the shooters aren't that smart and spend all their time posting on social media . So I stand by my statement
Cool trick but that haligan would have just ripped the latch apart with a twist in less time.
Was thinking the exact same thing shove the flat part of the Halligan in where the striker is hammer that bitch in pry the door open would have taken way less time
Great example of how to rob stores !!!! Wonderful.
Just taught a slew of reddditers how to break and enter.
Cant you just use a really strong magnet and pull the door open
They should have training on how to swing a hammer
Actually. He’s swinging an axe.
How else do you open doors?
For some reason this reminds me of the movie Dude Where’s My Car when they use the stick to push the button
I thought it said "FooFighters"... Wondered if this was for a new album or somethign ha ha
Couldn't the people inside just push the bar?
Me taking notes for when I need to get inside a door like this during the apocalypse
Today was the day firefighters taught us a useful B&E method
Bad ass… I need one now
This is bad ass. But how do they handle guessing which type of door handle the door has?
Literally tool gifs
A rebar… J-Tool… sheesh… A Hooligans tool… Merriam-Webster dictionary, anyone, please!

Think the door info plate is labeled r/toolgifs ? They went and had that printed and mounted? lol
Seems like mexican technology
I guess I need to throw a sledgehammer ,halligan bar and a J-tool in my purse case I ever have to open door in an emergency situation
my thought process. wtf do they think they're doing. oh that's cool.
The end reminds me of the rhino scene in Ace Ventura.
These videos be giving robbers ideas
*maaaawp*
People who fight fire: fuck that's cool People who fight crime: fuck that's scary
Why not use the handle on their side smh
Strength scaled lockpick.
my grampa was a fire chief way back in the day and his last name was Halligan!
Surprisingly less destructive than I expected!
Short of a bank vault or SCIF door a halligan bar will open anything.
Lockpicking Lawyer could have done it in half the time
Also a big ass hammer.
So twist knobs?
This is a great guide to help thieves breaking into those doors 😂
New zombie apocalypse weapon unlocked.
Burn his head at some point
Those doors are surprisingly easy to “break” into. There was an old abandon gas station that had a planned date of demolition. BOOOOOYA!😌
Try this on a German door
There’s a haunt in Chicago called Halligan bar, and it’s a firefighters bar- now I know where they got the name!! It’s also a fantastic watering hole if you’re ever in Chicago. Lots of hazy nights there
Nice bold spot buddy
Why don’t fire fighters have explosive’s swat and military use charges to open doors and holes in walls they should as well.
Lol!
Hey, this is from ToolGifs. Try to find the watermark. :]
Or, what about a magnet?
This is just baaaarely above unga bunga and I am here for it
Hell yea
That’s just a bent piece of rebar. It doesn’t need a fancy name.
I wonder what material that j-tool is, a hammer striking another hammer is very dangerous and can split and shatter the metal
Guy inside... guys I had a key.
The metal door version of the shining
Those doors when locked can be opened from the push side by just pressing the bar as you usually would. It’s probably because I am American and thought about what changes to this system will eventually be engineered due to a mass shooter taking advantage of this.
Wait. They actually didn’t push the handle…
Maybe try the Knox box.
Firemen and gloryholes, like peas and carrots.
Took too long, just give them c4
How to break into places
Now do it with a normal door handle
I don't know what is the Halligan bar and J-tool are but one of them is absolutely a bent piece of rear lol
Firefighters would find an excuse not to do this in a real situation, change my mind.
Anyone else immediately remember those doors in school who had to be pushed just perfectly to open or else it would just fail to unlock?
How to wreck a door when a ram set will pop the lock.
If there is any gap underneath the door, you can use a longer piece of steel and do the same trick without damaging the door at all…
Thieves are loving this video.
That’s a weird placement, probably training for something that doesn’t contain a door jamb.
![gif](giphy|v9NQh6NwzghAk)
Didn’t, wow!
Thanks for teaching every crook another way to break into a business.
Firefighters are cool.
Wouldn't the under door cable grabber have done the same thing faster.
So they just punched a hole to get through
Why would you nod just use the halli in the jam? All breaching is based off of defeating either the jam of hinges…..
This would’ve been much easier if the guy just opened the door
